It’s that “controlled movement” that’s the issue. Do whatever you want but don’t infringe on people’s fundamental right as enshrined in the constitution. Movement should NOT be restricted.

These guys are funny

Cities that stay clean and environmentally advanced don’t get there by chance—they build systems that make cleanliness normal and expected. Places like Singapore and Tokyo show that strict waste management, reliable public transport, and strong environmental laws can drastically reduce pollution and disorder. At the same time, cities such as Copenhagen and Amsterdam prove that investing in green spaces, clean energy, and smart technology makes urban life healthier and more sustainable. But what really makes these systems work is the mindset of the people—cleanliness is treated as a shared responsibility, not just a government duty.

In my view, Lagos cannot afford to treat this as optional anymore. The city’s growth and global relevance depend on adopting the same disciplined approach seen in modern cities. This doesn’t mean copying everything blindly, but it does mean taking waste control, public behavior, and environmental laws far more seriously than they are now. Without that shift, no amount of infrastructure will be enough. If Lagos wants to compete with the world’s leading cities, it has to embrace the idea that a clean and environmentally responsible city is not a luxury—it is the foundation for economic growth, public health, and quality of life.

They don't even have ordinary trash bins in public by government. Go to cities like Owerri! The government have trash bins and dump in every two streets which they evacuated every week and the city is neat ! It's so neat that they don't even have Okada and Keke in Owerri city and you don't even urinate in public unlike Lagos that they defecate and urinate in public

They should start from doing the right thing
You comparing Owerri municipal to a whole lafod state. One local government to one whole state. Lol nazdo mbaise, orlu, ideato, umudimu, clean with disposal in every 2 street. Owerri municipal is just 1 local government been the capital. Are u for real? Have seen where dirts where been packed in the next 30mins pple where already dumping dirts at the same place again. There dome place in lag no matter how u clear but will still get flooded. People orientation has to change first. In Asua pple pick up dirts personally and trash them, shey u wey dey form big boy will pick dirt on d street and trash it? For lagos to be clean massive orientation need to go on and massive penalties need to be applied. Many shades of pple are in lagos.

Re: Lagos Environmental Sanitation Day Will Hold Tomorrow, Saturday, April 25, 2026 by ariesbull: 8:55am On Apr 24
Exactly and you will see people that are trouble malers they will intentionally drive during that time and wait for this illiterate touts to descend on them and maybe destroy their cars... Then they will head to court and sue the State Government

Once the whole thing isn't in Nigerian constitution..then it's illegality

Which one is controlled movement, will there be movement or not?
Re: Lagos Environmental Sanitation Day Will Hold Tomorrow, Saturday, April 25, 2026 by ariesbull: 8:59am On Apr 24
They should start with massive orientation..how many times have you seen people defecating in public or pouring things or dirts outside or gutter

The first is empower officials to go after offenders then pick it up....

Mbaise ,orlu and zOdeator isn't Owerri..I said ouwrri city which is municipal, Owerri west , north and other adjoining cities all the way to airport never called Orlu or Mbaise they aren't Owerri

Also Imo state is bigger than Lagos...Lagos is smallest state in Nigeria so they should be able to manage it , followers by Anambra which is second smallest state and second most urbanized state in Nigeria after Lagos

And Anambra doest stink also ...

Let's not compare apple and oranges

It's start with orientation as you rightly said

Now, I'm beginning to think that you truly believe that you've made a point by comparing Owerri, Enugu, Uyo, or where again did you mention as against a city-state (or call it a state-wide City) of Lagos magnitude.

If you must know, Lagos is unique in all ramifications and by all standards. Lagos' city appellation is not on the basis of word of mouth. One should not just compare a State capital in a small space with the metro city of Lagos. Yes, there are challenges to keeping the streets of Lagos, the waterways, and especially the market places ultra clean, but they are very surmountable when people like you don't read non existent ulterior motives to every step taken by the Government. I bet you, the street cleaning trucks was not an ideation of the other States you made mention of their capitals, and if I may ask, why did you stop with only the capitals in those States, or why didn't you mention other cities in such States?.

Don't just be selective, be sensible enough to know that the average volume of wastes generated alone by one LCDA/LGA in Lagos State in one day may even triple that in Owerri and it's environs in one week. You may not want to believe it or agree/accept this, Lagos is housing the single biggest population of a city in the entire Sub-Sahara Africa.

ariesbull:
Very ridiculous.mwhy do we do things backwards , you don't get to see cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Sydney etc dedicated every last Saturday of the month for environmental shits like this, I don't know why Africans don't think

Lagos is a city of over 15 million now when you stop this number of people from work for 2 hours you have lost over 30 million productive hours and the money lost.we must factor these things and know there are more efficient and better ways things can be done. Techmology is there !

Lagos is a city that doesn't have street sweepers trucks ! When cities like Enugu and Aba are having it...they still have their human sweepers constituting nuisance to traffic and endangering there live!

Lagos should be creative in their environmental stuff...everywhere stinks and dirty! They should go and copy neat cities like Enugu, Uyo, Owerri, Abuja and Jos

Buy street sweepers ... Those human sweepers becoming nuisance and endangering their lives

Build drains and maintain them

Finally educate people on how to be neat

Lagos can afford these ...if other cities in East can ,Lagos is rich they can also
Re: Lagos Environmental Sanitation Day Will Hold Tomorrow, Saturday, April 25, 2026 by ariesbull: 11:25am On Apr 24
Every city is unique so not only Lagos !

Every city is unique...it's not about volume it's about attitude ! Singapore, Beijing, New York, Osaka, Guangzhou are all far bigger than Lagos in all ramifications..they don't close 2 - 3 hours every month end to clean up or do environmental stuff...

It's a continuous process and Lagos is lacking here...

So they should understudy other bigger cities even ordinary Cairo here and Jo'burg is more bigger Lagos can copy them.

Everything no be quarrel .

Growing up as child then when monthly sanitation is been held we usually enjoy the no movement . We see some people been arrested on the road , some guys playing football on the street and some carrying dirts to throwaway at the big waste bin.
Re: Lagos Environmental Sanitation Day Will Hold Tomorrow, Saturday, April 25, 2026 by autosavvy:
My point here is simple... Where the government says "Controlled Movement" and "Enforcement" what do they really have in mind? This is not a very smart move. Did the judgement of the Appeal Court in November 2016 expire? Or was there another judgment from a higher court setting aside the judgment of the Appeal Court? If the answers are "No", then another illegality is about to be forced down the throat of Lagos residents. This is not to say I am against having a clean environment, what I am against is the waste of productive hours in the name of keeping a city clean in an economy people are barely trying to get by. I'm sure the custodians of citizens rights will not allow it go unchallenged so let us wait for what comes after!

Ignorance

You don't need to ground the economy for 2- 3hrs to clean your environment.

If you have cleaning culture like the japanese, this nonsense would not have been brought back

Unfortunately, this move has prove to be counter productive

This 21st century . I expect the State to have an effective system that cleans up the roads and carts away refuse without having to shut down movement for 2 hours every last Saturday of the month

Employ enough workers on minimum wage rates to sweep the roads and clear drainages all across Lagos on a daily and continuous basis. This will be more effective and that’s what the government should do. And Lagos State government has enough resources to do this
Give it 3 months, they will discontinue this. It is counterproductive in a busy state like Lagos.
