Fatal Elephant Attack Sparks Panic In Oyo Community, One Dead, Another Missing by Estello(op): 5:56pm On Apr 24

A tragic wildlife incident has shaken Innayin Community in Oyo State after a wild elephant reportedly killed one resident and left another missing.

The attack occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, throwing residents into fear as the animal suddenly appeared in the area.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said officers responded quickly after receiving a distress call about the invasion.

According to him, police operatives, working with local hunters and vigilantes, were immediately deployed to the scene. On arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of a 45-year-old man, Ibrahim Tijani, in a nearby bush with injuries believed to have been inflicted by the animal.

His remains have been taken to the General Hospital in Iwere-Ile for further examination.

The police also revealed that another resident, 50-year-old Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, is still missing after reportedly encountering the same elephant. Search efforts are ongoing to locate him.

Authorities have since reinforced security in the area, with additional personnel, hunters, and vigilantes working to contain the situation and prevent further harm.

Residents have been urged to stay calm, avoid affected areas, and promptly report any sighting of the animal.

Police authorities noted that the situation would be handled in accordance with wildlife conservation laws, adding that relevant agencies, including the National Park Service, have been contacted for expert support.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Olugbenga, assured residents that efforts are underway to restore normalcy and ensure public safety, calling for continued cooperation with security agencies.

Old Oyo National Park must be protected at all cost. There are reports that the place is being randomly infiltrated by bandits and criminals. There is a reason why it's designated a national park several decades ago but we are typically unserious when it comes to national assets.

Average human speed: 10-16 km/h.

It's better you see them from afar and avoid them. If they are close to you when you see them ,it might end badly.

Yes, bro. There are still many wild elephants in certain forests of Ogun State, Yankari (Bauchi), Andoni (Rivers State), few in some deep parts of Oyo and Kwara forests and many, many in the national park in Cross River State.

I doubt it was an elephant that killed the man. Maybe it was an animal that they didn't know the name for, and they just said it was an elephant. Elephants don't just kill like that, and they also said it appeared out of nowhere...where did elephant come from and where did it disappear to.
