The deal was a brainchild of Buhari's cerebral but spited chief of staff Abba Kyari. The project died with him in 2020. |

OredoPikin:The “Nigeria–Siemens deal” (officially called the Presidential Power Initiative, PPI) didn’t disappear—but it has had a rocky, stop-and-start journey. Here’s the real situation, stripped of politics and hype: 🔌 What the Siemens deal was supposed to do A ~$2.3 billion partnership between Nigeria and Germany (via Siemens) Goal: fix transmission + distribution and ramp power to: 7,000 MW → 11,000 MW → 25,000 MW Focus: upgrade substations, transformers, and grid infrastructure—not just generation 🚫 What went wrong (why people think it “failed”) 1. It basically stalled for years After initial signing under Buhari, the project lost momentum Key driver (Chief of Staff Abba Kyari) died COVID-19 disruptions + bureaucracy slowed everything Result: the deal became “largely dormant” for a long time 2. Targets were missed badly Nigeria was supposed to hit 7,000 MW by 2021 But even by 2025: Generation still ~4,000–5,000 MW Transmission/distribution even lower So on paper, the plan failed its original timeline 3. Structural problems in Nigeria’s power sector Even beyond Siemens, the system itself is weak: Poor transmission infrastructure Weak distribution companies (DisCos) Gas supply issues Grid instability and frequent collapses 👉 In short: you can’t fix electricity with one contract if the whole value chain is broken. 🔄 What’s happening now (2024–2026 update) The deal has been revived—not cancelled The current administration restarted it and signed accelerated agreements Germany confirmed it’s now back on track Work is ongoing (Phase 1) Focus: grid upgrades, substations, transformers Expected impact: +7,000 MW capacity improvement (mainly transmission) Some equipment already delivered (mobile substations, transformers) ⚖️ So what’s the honest verdict? ❌ It did not deliver what was promised on time ❌ It was effectively stalled for years ✅ It is not dead—just delayed and restructured ⚠️ Success now depends on execution, not announcements 🧠 Bottom line The Siemens deal didn’t “disappear”—it underperformed, stalled, and is now being restarted in phases. If it works this time, you’ll see: stronger grid (less collapse) gradual increase in stable supply If it fails again, it’ll be for the same reason as before: 👉 Nigeria’s electricity problems go beyond one project. |

Flangelo12:It took Egypt less than 3yrs to do same thing Nigeria is struggling to do for 8yrs. The Egypt deal was supposed to be completed for 4yrs, but because of the seriousness of govt in delivering it, it took them 2yrs and 4months. But look at u defending this scam by APC without shame. When that project was signed, they gave us 2025 as the year to deliver the 3rd phase and complete project This is 2026 and not even 1000MW out of 25000MW has been delivered Are u not ashamed? |

Macphenson:How did you come to that conclusion that nobody sees the effect of naira to Yuan deal? You people just like to make blanket statements without verifiable facts to prove what you are saying. You would be lying and still accuse the government for lying to you. I know the Siemens deal didn't materialize, but to say nobody sees the effect of the naira to Yuan deal is not true. |

keemsleek:You mean for 8yrs they couldn't deliver even 1k MW? Meaning to deliver that 25k MW it will take APC govt 200yrs instead of the initial 6yrs that was signed 🙄🙄. How is that progress? Are u not tired ? To even think that same Siemens delivered same 25k MW for Egypt in 2yrs and 4months instead of the 4yrs they signed because of the seriousness of their govt. Who cursed us for this country? |
