The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a warning to content creators across Nigeria, cautioning against the unauthorized use of its name, logo, and identity in digital content.

The agency stressed that misrepresentation, impersonation, or the use of its branding in skits, videos, or online productions could attract legal consequences, including possible prosecution. This move, according to the EFCC, is aimed at curbing misinformation and preventing fraudulent activities linked to the misuse of its image.

The development has, however, triggered mixed reactions online. While some Nigerians support the directive as a necessary step to protect the integrity of the anti-graft body, others argue that it could have implications for creative freedom and digital expression.

Content creators, particularly in Nigeria’s growing online entertainment space, often rely on satire and real-life references to engage audiences. Analysts say the EFCC’s position may force creators to exercise greater caution in how public institutions are portrayed.

As conversations continue, stakeholders are calling for clearer guidelines that balance institutional protection with the rights of creators to produce content without undue restriction.

I even saw one pouring water on innocent Ladies, verbally abusing them by calling them names because of their dress.

Content creation will not be an excuse to perpetrate ignorance. Don't misrepresent the organisation, if you must use them then meet them to educate you. Because anything you do , might be used against you. When FBI and CIA are used for movies the script writers liaise with the FBI sources to guide them properly on such endeavours.

How is what you wrote here a crime? People use FBI and CIA in crimes and movies on a steady abroad, even MOSSAD. But here, you aren't even allowed to mention useless EFCC or wear their uniform in movies, as though the bad rep they have is from their depiction in movies.

The trinity guy was arrested and detained sometimes ago but we forget easily in this part of the world. By the time one of them is sentenced to a long term prison time and more are totally banned, others will adjust.

The first amendment allows Americans to say virtually anything they want, especially against public institutions.

Conspiracy theorists openly claim the CIA was behind JFK's assassination and UFO coverups, among other nefarious things, no one has been threatened or jailed yet.

When people provide false information about public entities they can simply release rebuttals and enlighten the public.

The EFCC is just blowing hot air and overreacting. Everyone knows comedy is humor so why the angst? They can't take a joke?

Wonder why the warning. Some of these content creators go the extreme. Ignorance should not be an excuse.

As a public agency, the EFCC has a higher burden to prove defamation than a private citizen. They have to prove you acted with "actual malice" (knowing the information was false).
In short: You are right to be concerned. The EFCC can regulate its brand to prevent fraud, but threatening to jail creators for simply using the name in skits is likely a violation of your constitutional right to freedom of expression.
My advice? Stay creative, but stay factual. You can mock the "EFCC" as an institution freely just don’t pretend to be a specific officer to commit a crime.
