Supreme Court Verdict Settles Umuchukwu Identity, Igwe Maduka’s Election Final – UPU

The Umuchukwu Progressive Union (UPU) has declared that the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria affirming the change of the community’s name from Nkerehi to Umuchukwu is final and irreversible.

Speaking on behalf of the union, the very proactive President General, Chief Adinchezor Chukwuemeka said the judgment has conclusively settled all disputes surrounding the identity of the community, warning that any covert or overt attempt to revert to the former name, Nkerehi, would not succeed.

He noted that the apex court’s decision, which upheld the government gazette recognising Umuchukwu, represents the highest legal authority on the matter and must be respected by all parties.

“The verdict of the Supreme Court of Nigeria has come to stay. It is not subject to further debate or manipulation. Any surreptitious effort to return to the old name Nkerehi will fail because the law is clear and binding,” Chief Chukwuemeka stated.

The UPU further emphasised that the transition to Umuchukwu followed due democratic process, including a referendum overwhelmingly supported by community members, and subsequently validated through all levels of the judiciary.

On traditional leadership, the association reaffirmed that the election of Kenneth Maduka as the traditional ruler of Umuchukwu remains valid, lawful, and binding.

According to Comrade Chukwuemeka, the process that produced Igwe Maduka was conducted in line with established guidelines and under the supervision of relevant authorities from the Anambra State Government, including officials from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

He stressed that the outcome reflected the will of the people, adding that the overwhelming support recorded in the election underscores the legitimacy of Igwe Maduka’s ascension to the throne.

“The election of Igwe Kenneth Maduka remains a settled matter. It was free, fair, and conducted under government supervision. The mandate given to him by the people is clear and cannot be undermined by dissenting voices,” he added.

The union called on residents and stakeholders to disregard what it described as misleading narratives aimed at creating confusion, urging the community to remain united and focused on development.

UPU maintained that with the legal affirmation of its name and the recognised leadership structure in place, Umuchukwu is poised to continue its progress under a stable and lawful traditional institution.

Not by the Nigerian government. It is a case of one man waking up one morning and changing the name of his ancestral town from Nkerehi to Umuchukwu, because he has made money. He even went ahead to install his younger brother as the Igwe of the community. That man is no other person than Dr Godwin Maduka.

What the Supreme Court actually decided:
The Supreme Court did NOT give a final judgment confirming the name change from Nkerehi to Umuchukwu.

The case before the Supreme Court was only an interlocutory appeal (a preliminary issue), not the main case.
Specifically, the appellants were trying to stop (prohibit) the government from conducting a referendum on the name change.
👉 The Supreme Court outcome:
The appeal was dismissed (because it was withdrawn by the appellants).

What that decision legally means
The ruling only confirmed that the government can conduct a referendum on whether to change the community’s name.
It did NOT settle the main dispute about whether the name should legally be Nkerehi or Umuchukwu.

Status of the main case
The substantive issue (actual name change) is still pending at the Anambra State High Court (Aguata).

That means:
The legality of the gazette changing the name is still being challenged.
No final Supreme Court pronouncement has been made on that core issue.
Why there is confusion
Some reports claimed the Supreme Court “affirmed the name change.”
That interpretation comes from the fact that:
Lower court decisions favoring the process were not overturned.
Legally:
No final determination on the name itself has been made by the Supreme Court.

🧾 Simple summary
❌ Supreme Court did NOT finally decide “Umuchukwu vs Nkerehi.

✅ Supreme Court only dismissed an appeal about stopping a referendum.
⚖️ The real case about the validity of the name change is still in court (High Court Aguata).

The UPU PG was wrong there was not such judgement from supreme court. The Nkerehi side withdrawal of the appeal is the only reason the case was struck out and a fine awarded. Explain - Supreme Court stage (Recent development)
The case reached the Supreme Court of Nigeria — BUT:
Only on a preliminary issue (interlocutory appeal)
👉 What happened:
The appellants (Nkerehi side) withdrew the appeal
The Supreme Court dismissed the case
Costs were awarded against the appellants

What the Supreme Court decision really means, It did NOT decide:
Whether the town is legally Umuchukwu or Nkerehi, It ONLY means:
The earlier rulings allowing processes like referendum were not stopped
🔴 Current legal status (VERY IMPORTANT)
The main case is STILL pending at:
Anambra State High Court, Aguata
👉 That case will decide:
Whether the gazette is valid

Whether the community is legally:
✅ Umuchukwu or Nkerehi
⚠️ Key takeaway (no confusion)
❌ Supreme Court has NOT given final judgment on the name
✅ The dispute is STILL legally unresolved
⚖️ Final authority now lies with the High Court decision (unless appealed again later) People must stop this act of misinterpreting laws without understanding what the law means. This case has a long way to go unless the two groups comes together to bury their sword for peace to reign on both sides. Thank you

Oga go rest with your screwed narratives, you would prefer darkness to light, they whole community agreed on the change of name except some few idol worshippers who thinks that the old name symbolizes subservience to the deity....all over the world nations change names especially when such no longer befits its present status. Can we now allow this issue to rest, since supreme court has given its verdict.

Well, the people and the law just supported the man, so what's your problem? Without that man, who knew Nkerehi anywhere?

So who is afraid of a referendum on the change of name?why are they appellants against a referendum? They people to be captured in the referendum are the people of the community,so let their voice be heard? They people have said categorically, that they prefer 'Umuchukwu' as the name of the community and a few recalcitrant ones wants to suppress the voice of the generality of the people. So in this case, who is the oppressor?

This matter is in the court, I only clarified the supreme court ruled and the confusion of spreading wrong narratives. At the end I said the two group can still make peace. This case can go either way. If the Nkerehi side has certain proofs they can take this case. However the community need peace.

Thank you very much for this explanation of the matter.

I noticed someone who said that it was the decision of one man who had made money to change the name of the town from Nkerehi to Umuchukwu? Is it possible for such to happen, at least without the contribution of certain very influential people in the town?

Nkerehi sounds like an elephant and I can assume that those who chose the new path of name change could have felt that Nkerehi had to do with a diabolical past, which they want to erase.

In preserving the name Nkerehi, are the supporters feeling that their identity is getting wiped away? If the name Nkerehi is not in tandem with the present realities in the community, is it not appropriate to change the name? The community looks nice from recent images posted.

Some towns have in the past effected nane changes. Ahaba changed to Asaba. Agbadagiri changed to Badagry. Gwosh changed to Jos. Bonny from Okoloama, Port harcourt from Igwe ocha, etc.

Notice that the man accused of using money to change the narrative of the community, has played a very massive role in making the town a beautiful place. Making him the Igwe must have been in recognition of his efforts to his people and community.

While he was building the massive projects, where were those disputing the name change?
While he was giving scholarships and sending their children abroad, where were those disputing the name change?
While he was spending his personal money, where were they?
While he was bringing Anambra state government’s presence, where were they all? Surely they were hiding their own resources and bewitching the community.

They should be grateful to have Dr. Maduka in the community, who has done so well and projected the community positively to the world.

A name a community has been known for ages cannot be changed by mere supreme Court ruling.
We have known Nkerefi or Nkerehi all the time. But all Igbos are Umuchukwu. So it doesn't make sense to give Umuchukwu to one community.

Their problem.

Funny people.

Financier: A Maduka.
Late igwe: A Maduka.
New igwe: A Maduka.

Who changed the name: A Maduka.

Who sponsored the Supreme Court case?: A Maduka.

In all, the issue seems to be centered on people with the surname "Maduka". Wouldn't it be more proactive to rename the town from Nkerehi to Umumaduka?

This naturally would bring strong opposition between those who love light and darkness.
Umuchukwu itself means Children of God and nkerehi is linked to a deity name , the People have decided to rename the community since they believed the former name deprived her of development so why the fuss?
I understand people would say how about those asian tigers developing while worshipping gods? Most of these things aren't understood by the physical. Remember the Atheist who converted to Christianity recently after been a part of those who toured the moon? This is an example of a person who was ignorant until God opened his eyes through His amazing wonders!!
