Zulum Commends Tinubu Over ₦68 Billion Maiduguri Power Plant by Pakute(op): 6:48pm On Apr 26

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving N68 billion operational supports for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP).

The emergency plant project, initiated in 2021 as a presidential intervention, was a critical response to the prolonged power outage caused by insurgents who vandalised power infrastructure, leaving the state without electricity for nearly two years.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dauda Iliya, Zulum said the swift intervention by the Federal Government is not only timely but will also mitigate security challenges and improve the economic livelihoods of the people of Borno State.

“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I wish to most profoundly appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for approving N2 billion monthly OPEX intervention funding from March 2026 to December 2028, totalling N68 billion to bridge the existing funding gap in the operations of the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP),” Zulum stated.

He noted that the MEPP intervention by the Federal Government through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has been pivotal in restoring power supply to Borno State.

Governor Zulum added that the power plant, commissioned in 2021 and upgraded to 50MW in December 2023, has catalysed socio-economic development, created employment opportunities, and supported small and medium enterprises across the state.

He added that improved electricity supply has enhanced security by strengthening economic resilience and reducing vulnerabilities associated with insurgency and criminal activities.

The governor further stated that the presidential approval would ensure a sustainable power supply to Maiduguri and the surrounding areas, reinforcing the state’s resilience.

Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the Federal Government to promote sustainable development in the energy sector and ensure lasting peace and stability in the state.

I think the president have listening ears and support state governments in their infrastructure building efforts. I think he supports state that can convince him on the benefits of their projects to the masses.

The main reason why Borno is in darkness in the first place hasn't been tackled and now they want to build a 68 billion naira power plant there? So Boko Haram won't attack this one again?

No, Tinubu is using Peter Obi and Atiku’s money. Ask Makinde what he did with the 50 billion Naira that Tinubu gave him to help his people during a disaster. The vagabond didn’t even mention it, the money is in his account in Dubai. Tinubu just dey look am as he (Makinde) will weep when hand touch am. Were the evidence? No evidence; ma worry, I no believe you.. If Tinubu is working as claimed by some blind persons here, let him do something with a great impacts in Nigeria. That brewery that Pitobi built in Anambra that his supporters and some Anambra youths keep glorifying as though it were a monument to genius, was it built with his personal money?

The same state funds he allowed to sit in accounts generating interest for him, rather than deploying them toward meaningful infrastructure that could have improved the lives of ordinary people, was that his private wealth too?

It's good to appreciate.

The speed at which the former NNPC GMD Mele Kyari built the gas power plant (Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant) in Borno State need to be studied.

Boko Haram destroyed the grid feeding electricity to Borno State. Mele Kyari proposed to Buhari that they should build an Independent gas power station so as not to rely on National grid. Buhari approved it and funds were released within weeks. The gas power plant was completed within a year. No gas pipeline was laid because gas is transferred to the station via trucks from South.

If it was in the Niger Delta the project would have taken 10 years to complete.

The question is why can't the current Minister of Power copy the model and replicate it in all the States in Nigeria?
