The Federal Government, through the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), has flagged off a 2-megawatt solar hybrid power project worth N3.8 billion at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil, Kano state.

The project, under the Renewed Hope Solarisation Programme, includes the commissioning of 200 solar-powered streetlights within the university.

The ceremony was led by ECN Director-General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi and Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Tochukwu-Udeh, SAN.

Dr. Abdullahi said the contract, awarded to Safiatu Global Resources Limited, has a three-month completion deadline with no provision for cost variation.

The project aims to cut the university’s N22.4 million monthly electricity bill and provide sustainable power.

Energy audits showed ADUSTECH, with 24,339 students and staff plus 5,200 hostel bed spaces, has an energy demand of 12.3MW–16.4MW against a connected load of only 8.26MW. Its diesel backup capacity is just 2.07 MVA.

“This energy reality is unacceptable, and it is what we are here to begin addressing,” Abdullahi said.

He noted that while ECN’s technical recommendation for ADUSTECH is a 7MW solar mini-grid, the 2MW Phase 1 system flagged off is “a foundation designed for expansion.”

The Phase 1 system will include a Battery Energy Storage System and be installed in decentralised clusters.

Abdullahi added that the Wudil groundbreaking follows similar projects at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and Bayero University Kano, as part of a national programme targeting hospitals and tertiary institutions in all 36 states and the FCT.

Minister Tochukwu-Udeh described the project as “strategic national policy, not philanthropy,” to support innovations addressing Nigeria’s challenges.

ADUSTECH Vice-Chancellor Prof. Musa Tukur-Yakasai called it “a bold step toward sustainable energy, innovation, and academic excellence.”

It is far cheaper to have Mini plants on roof tops. Max of 50 Kw per unit or so. Solar is now efficient and such can be supervised on a part time basis making it cheaper to run. Large scale solar is more expensive to run. A unit of 50kw can possibly serve ten houses or more

What if we vote and they pocket our votes as usual?

Well sha, anything to uproot Tinubu is okay for me and it should start by voting another person. Therefore, GO AND VOTE cheesy

A time will come when NEPA will beg for customers dem no go see.

NEPA is the final institution that'll go the way of Nitel. People who have other sources of electricity, especially this Solar System.

So long as there is no cost reflective tarrif, you can appoint a professor of electrical supply, and power would still be deficient

Plus around the time our telecoms sector was expanding under Obasanjo, the responsible ministers were in order a public administrator with no experience in the telecoms industry, a veterinarian, a career politician who had been an English lecturer before coming into politics and a career civil servant. Yet the telecoms sector grew..because it was allowed to set its prices and because one has to pay money before one uses a phone , thus there is no equivalent of bypassing meter as in electricity

Its very funny. He only appoint his gangs of thieves. Leaving the people who should fill such position and make something good out of it. A whole first accountant of Lagos and a student of Chicago university grin

NEPA and NITEL failed because they were not allowed to charge cost reflective tarrifs.

Even NITEL GSM subsidiary MTEL was charging half the price that MTN and then Econent were charging because that was what government told them to charge. Result, MTN and Econent made enough profits to improve service. Glo followed in their footsteps and did same. By 2008, Glo was expanding into other countries. Mtel was on its last legs

Besides NEPA does not exist, it is now gencos and discos and they are private companies.

When people are underpaying and stealing power and only band A who form 20% of total consumers are paying a cost reflective tarrif, you won't expect good service.

Do you even understand what a disaster looks like?

A disaster is when someone confidently refer to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria as an accountant. A level of ignorance so spectacular it practically announces itself before the person even finishes speaking.

Your president should implement cost reflective tarrifs even if it costs him.

There is nothing like cheap electricity

I'm personally not a fan of solar.

Many people don't know panels only last for 2 years before output decline and it has to be replaced. There is also issue of overheating when placed on some types of roof like aluminum sheets thus spoiling faster. There are many technical challenges.

People installing it prefer not to tell the truth.

The cost of setting it up is similar to buying fuel for 2 years. It is only viable when all other factors align.

This is what chatgpt said:

No—those claims are off;

Standard solar panels typically last 20–30 years with gradual output decline (~0.3–0.8% per year), not a 2-year lifespan.

Heat and roof type can reduce efficiency slightly, but proper mounting, airflow, and quality installation prevent damage.

The real issue is poor system design and cheap components, not the technology itself.

I was telling my guy who installs solar panels and inverters and he agreed. He even swore not to spend a dime in any solar installation of his, he would prefer getting a mini lister or power plants generators than having a solar installed .
They won't tell you the truth, government is impounding the original solars into fakes and distribute them to the market sectors, 4years time Nigerians will regret having solar instead of flooding the street to protest, here in Nigeria our government had found out that we prefer alternatives rather than handling a situation, so it's a win for the government.
Not just government, the Japanese and Chinese solars nowadays have inferior watts than the ones of 5years ago, they now see western Africa especially Nigeria and Cameron as a money avenue so they focus more on quantity than quality and our government e no concern them.
Do you think Chinese and Japanese flood the market looking for solar inverters?? They use ‘electricity’, nothing beats dam generated electricity. Nigeria is a goner, too sad.
