Why Obi Was Not Impressed With The ‘Ibadan Declaration’ - TheCable by Melezenawii(op): 11:30am On Apr 28
There was an air of cautious optimism on Saturday when opposition heavyweights gathered in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, for what many had billed as a defining moment ahead of the 2027 elections.

The All Opposition Political Party Leaders summit, chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and hosted by Seyi Makinde, Oyo governor, brought together former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso (former governor of Kano), Rotimi Amaechi (former governor of Rivers), Peter Obi (former governor of Anambra), and other leaders.

By the end of the summit, a communiqué — now dubbed the “Ibadan Declaration” — announced a resolution to field a single presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.

At first glance, it looked like a major step toward unity, aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

But beneath that show of unity, cracks are already beginning to emerge.

Insiders told TheCable that Obi left the summit dissatisfied — not because of what was said — but because of what was left unsaid.

At the heart of his concern is zoning, the long-standing principle of rotating power between Nigeria’s regions. For Obi and many southern stakeholders, any credible opposition arrangement must explicitly address this issue.

Insiders say Obi’s silence after the opposition summit tells of his displeasure with the outcome.

Unlike his usual practice, the former Anambra governor has not commented publicly on the Ibadan Declaration. His verified X account, often active with updates from political engagements, has remained conspicuously quiet on the matter days after the event.

Instead, Obi posted photos of himself playing tennis in Ibadan — a subtle but striking contrast to the unfolding political drama.

“If they had gone further to say that the opposition would respect zoning, it would have been a different outcome. They only made a political statement for one candidate. The summit is as good as not achieving anything,” the source said.

Insiders further told TheCable that Obi is already looking beyond the summit, sticking to his original political calculations and exploring his options pending the supreme court judgement on the ADC leadership, while also keeping communication lines open with Kwankwaso.

Effectively, while the Ibadan summit projected unity, key players appear to be quietly pursuing parallel strategies.

The opposition may have agreed in principle to present a single candidate, but without resolving the deeper questions of zoning, ambition, and trust, that goal remains distant.

Nope, it wasn't zoning that made him not happy. It was revealed that Makinde will deputise Atiku... Even a dump person knows that only a strong northern candidate can defeat Tinubu. You have to be amongst World's Dumbest not to know that. Even the ruling party know that Obi doesn't stand a chance against Tinubu, that's why you see people like Festus Keyemo, Ayo Fayose and others stylishly telling that Obi is the strongest candidate and should be given the tickets, you see APC supporters disguising as obidients, asking for the tickets..... For those shouting Obi/Kwankwanso, you guys still have a lot to learn, kwankwanso won't do much in helping the ticket to win, he would rather stay out and allow Tinubu finish in 2031, by 2031, kwankwanso would be the strongest northern candidate because age won't be on Atiku s side in 2031. Instead Obi to call his supporters to order and work with Atiku, he's encouraging them to abuse everyone, 2013, Tinubu and his supporters were already working for/with buhari, that's strategy.

I know something was wrong at the event, the moment obi was directed to third row to be seated with VIPs security aides instead of front row as usual. No any pictures of OBI in that event from his media crew that like publicity grin grin

Peter Obi the itchy finger hasn't said a thing about Ibadan summit but has quickly made hasty & unverified comments on cancellation of OAU event. His silence on Amala summit is quite telling.

-Kiss the truth!

Who cares whether Peter Obi is impressed or not ?
That he is no longer considered relevant was demonstrated by placing him in the 3rd row with mere aids to VIPs.
His destiny never goes beyond the 3rd place.

He was lured into the ADC to de-mystify and render him inconsequential.
They knew the moment he leaves for another party, he would've lost relevance and repute with the very few that had some respect for him.

If he was seated in the 3rd row, that's humiliation and disrespect of the highest order. That's terrible.

At times, you do see the point of those from the East who complain about how they and their leaders are treated in Nigeria.

Imagine Mr Tinubu being sat in the 3rd row of ANY APC meeting during Mr Buhari's government even when it was obvious things weren't right between them.

That would have been the last APC meeting Mr Tinubu would have attended. Them no born them.

ADC is now a hostile territory for Mr Obi. Even if he wins the primaries, most of the Northern ADC politicians will likely not support him in the Presidential elections.

Peter Obi - 3rd Class in Philosophy.

3rd Class citizen/5PaCenter.

Now they seated him in 3rd Row with the dongari and bodyguards.

The Protocol acted appropriately grin

If Obi is relying on zoning aka free ticket, how does he intend to get the majority northern votes that don't trust anything from the SE courtesy of I.P.O.B lobbying the US to bomb the north and break Nigeria?

I wonder why this man was so foolish not to have formed his own party long before now.
Tinubu formed a party, Buhari formed a party, Ojukwu formed a party. But this Obi just like Atiku is just not serious or wise

How is a northerner the only strongest candidate?

How many zones did Atiku win with PDP's structure?

Obi is the best candidate, if the North think Tinubu is the best candidate and wants to vote for him again, so be it.

The point the east do make is one of the mistakes they do make..

In this context, who placed Obi on the 3rd row? Is he not his party, ADC? How is that Nigerians problem? Did Nigeria instructed Adc to place their members on 3rd row?
