Few weeks ago, a thread made frontpage here on Nairaland about the terrible state of mobile internet in Nigeria: https://www.nairaland.com/8648937/mtn-airtel-internet-getting-worse Many users shared their experiences, and a lot of people could relate to the complaints about slow browsing, unstable connections, and frequent network drops. A Nigerian amputee lady recently lost a remote US call center job on her very first day all because of poor network connection. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3fU_qpFwZY According to her, the connection kept failing during work hours, and before she could stabilize things, the opportunity was gone and her contract terminated.Getting a remote job like that isn’t easy, especially in Nigeria, which makes the situation even more painful. For some people, bad network is just frustrating… But for others, it can cost real opportunities.

This almost happened to me last year. So, December last year, I got shortlisted for an interview for an overseas job. I had to drive to the best network area. Waited well before the time. Interview started, they were asking just what I know. Then one of my cousins who hasn't called me for years started calling. The more I ended the call, the more she called, disrupting my mobile network. I quickly picked it. She said she just wanted to say hi. At this hour and minute? She hasn't called me again since then. I apologized to the panel that it was my network and that it was quite unusual bla bla. They understood and we continued the interview. Minutes into it again, network completely disappeared. No coverage at all. Ha! I drove around a bit and it reappeared and I reconnected. We continued. Few minutes into it again, it disappeared. Now, I was sweating. After a while, it reappeared and they asked few more questions, I asked mine, and interview was over. I was convinced the job was gone but days later, I received a contract. Everyone I knew who interviewed for it wasn't picked. It was like a miracle. Nigeria system is almost built to frustrate everything. ![]() |

Desusi:All these network providers need to be held accountable for the poor Internet network they have been dishing out recently. Cost of buying data keep increasing without commensurate improvement in network. The bad thing is that our regulators are not ready to whip the big stick. |

The wisest thing to have done was to have a viable alternative on standby in case of an eventuality like this. Test all the networks best in your area and stick to that. I have all the GSM network providers and Spectranet too. Sometimes, I find the unreliable Glo network useful when Airtel and Mtn choose to fûck up. |

Once you have job that requires a constant online connection, you MUST have at least two network providers. No way around this. It is what it is. Otherwise you are taking chances and can get messed up. People also need to understand that I had power problem, I had network problem are not acceptable excuses. They are telling the employer or partner you are not the level of capacity they want and they will simply move on to someone with that capacity. |

timidapsin:There is no way all networks will be bad in your area. Like in my environ, GLO has been the best, Airtel the worst, while MTN is fair. |
