• The former Labour Party vice presidential candidate was reacting to the Ibadan Declaration by an opposition coalition, which agreed to field a single candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu.

A former vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has dismissed the possibility of a unified opposition candidate for the 2027 presidential election, describing the idea as impossible.

Baba-Ahmed made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He was reacting to the Ibadan Declaration by an opposition coalition, which agreed to field a single candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, the Ibadan meeting was not attended by all opposition parties, but only the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Baba-Ahmed, who was the vice presidential candidate alongside Peter Obi under the Labour Party in 2023, described the idea of a single opposition candidate in 2027 as “a lie.”

“I think it is a lie (unified opposition candidate). There is no way they will agree; it is not possible. It is only two parties, PDP and ADC. Now the faction of PDP who went there are the runners-up to Wike,” Baba-Ahmed said.

“Two parties coming to say that they are the entire opposition in Ibadan doesn’t make sense to me and I think it should not even be a topic for you and I to dwell upon.”

I watched the interview yesterday. He has a reservation about ADC. He even hinted he had suggested to Obi if he wants to go with El Rufai or Kwankwaso, he has his blessings but for him, he likes to plan ahead. He believes they should have contested the 2023 result which he claims Labour won.

He said he is a man who plans dadadada but fear politicians, they have sweet mouth. Thank God he spoke about his bro too. Life is not like that Datti Ahmed. This is a honest assessment of how things stand in opposition politics in Nigeria, kudos to this guy.

It takes a special grace to do what President's Tinubu and Buhari did to dismiss PDP, these current charlatan opposition people simply don't have it and probably never will.

In 2019 some young presidential candidates suggested they would merge and support the interest of one candidate. Once the candidate emerged in a primaries the others called foul and the unified opposition crashed.

In 2023, southern governors came together and decided the presidency must come south after the north’s 8 years. The governor who hosted them became the running mate to a Northerner.

All these agreements wouldn’t hold up when push comes to shove. Not every politician has the patience of Tinubu to see a merger through.
