The old Benin city was Yoruba but the present one is not. That is where the confusion comes from. Your ancestors did not live inside the old Benin city
Exactly my point. They was never a time Bini was Yoruba. We are distinct people and that must be respected.

No uncles , aunts to ask?
They all are saying they don't know. I don't know if they're feigning ignorance or they truly do not know.

Or maybe they don't want us to find our father's people.

I've even tried going to the school in Lagos where I did a few days in JSS1 b4 my parents passed but they said they couldn't help since I didn't even do my Junior WAEC there, let alone SSCE.

The nursery school we attended then, I've searched for it online, no records of it.

My mother-in-law always cracks me up whenever she speaks; her thick Benin accent is so funny.

My wife’s accent isn’t too pronounced, but whenever she wants to tease me, she deliberately pronounces some words the Benin way. She knows I’ll react ----once I give her a bombastic side-eye, she laughs and corrects herself immediately.
You have to stop intimidating her and allow her to feel free.

Do you mean the men aren't hardworking, I also heard they have many landladies too
I didn't say so, just that their women are not the docile stay at home type, most are the ones who bring their family out of poverty

The people that lived in Benin even 250 years ago were no different from the Itsekiri the Olukunmi the Owo or the Ilaje. They didn't see themselves as different from the hinterland Yoruba and your ancestors obviously did not mix much with them. The other Edoid speaking people mixed with the Yoruba more than the ancestors of the present day Benin but the present day Benin have taken over the new city of Benin.
Now there are hundreds of not thousands of Benin stories in Yoruba history contained in the ifa corpus, you should therefore not expect the Yoruba to forget or overlook all that just because the current majority language of Benin city is a strange tongue to them. Would you? So that is the issue. Outside all that, it is quite obvious that current Benin people are not Yoruba. They are the least affiliated to the Yoruba of all western Edoid groups

If there is anything I want to change about my people, it is our geographical location: I hate the fact we are bordered by the Yoruba race in the west. The other people I have boundaries with - Itshekiri, Ijaw, Anioma (Igbo), etc, are cool people.
Why does that bother you? grin

Anyone knows where or how I can trace my Benin root? My parents died when I was about 9 yrs of age, that was around 1999. My mum's family were the ones to come to us first and took us to Rivers State, changed our surname to theirs.

I know how my real surname is pronounced but I have forgotten the real spelling. And I believe knowing the real spelling would be a starting point in helping me locate my root.
Just spell it anyhow, I will give you the correct spelling. Why not ask your mother's sisters or siblings about the village your father is from , I can help you go to the village or quarter and trace it. But you will need to pay for transportation to the areas. Try spelling it lets see.
