The contractor identity is never mentioned, the dead body has no name, the eyewitness begged not to be mentioned yet the power station was shot down. The contract sum is never mentioned. The contractor died under the water, not his staff. People who write articles like this think they can always control narratives the way they like. In their dirty mind, what so ever they dish out must be the news.

naija anyhowness, no processes or laissez faire attitude towards everything. In a proper LOTO , only the person working on the machine holds the key to remove the lock. There has to be an explanation for this

Are they shutting down the power plant to commemorate his death?
Or they need to shut down the plant to know what killed him?
As in, they need to shut down the power plant to ask who turned the pump on?

dominique:
Egbin Power Plc has shut down operations following a fatal industrial accident involving a contractor during an underwater maintenance exercise.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, led to the shutdown of the plant, a major contributor to electricity supply on the national grid.

Confirming the development to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Thursday, the company’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr Felix Ofulue, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

“Immediately following the incident, established emergency response, safety, and reporting protocols were activated, and the relevant authorities were promptly notified,” he said.

Ofulue said the company was cooperating with relevant authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that a review was ongoing.

“Egbin Power remains firmly committed to the health, safety, and well-being of all personnel and contractors, and to maintaining the highest standards across its operations,” he added.

‘How it happened’
A source, who preferred anonymity and familiar with the development, told NAN that the contractor was engaged in specialised underwater work at the plant’s pump house when the incident occurred.

The assignment reportedly involved retrieving or stabilising a submerged pumping machine.

The equipment was said to have unexpectedly powered on while the diver was still within the restricted zone.

“The diver went in to carry out a recovery operation inside the lagoon water pump system. Unfortunately, the pump came on unexpectedly and he was trapped and killed by the impeller,” a source said.

According to the source, the deceased contractor was affiliated with Browndive Underwater Services, a firm known for handling complex underwater industrial operations across Nigeria’s oil, gas, and maritime sectors.

The Contractor keh?
Do you mean one of the Engr working for the contractor. The main Contractor handling the maintenance and repairs of Egbin Power station will be such a big man that it will be very rare to the point of almost impossible to dive under water personal repairing such system.
But I stand to be corrected sha

In accidents like this it is standard operating procedure.

Whatever the case ... the pump came on and he was killed by the propeller. If this is the case .... there would be no body for burial. Was he recently promoted?

Use your brain the person who died is an employee of the contractor which is most likely a company.

The standard procedure anywhere in the world is to first inform the family before releasing the name to the public.

You conspiracy theorists should learn to use your brain sometimes!

Useless persons conspire to kill contractor should be the title.

If nothing comes out of this case and culprits are not brought to book then it will be that all of you working there are useless and you had better be watching your backs because you could be next.

That person is talking nonsense. You will hear somethings in this Nigeria and you will want to go mad!
How can the pump "suddenly go on"? Does it now have a mind of it's own? What is the power source of the underwater pump itself? Is it hydro powered, solar powered, gas powered or battery powered. And whatever the power source, there must be a control switch. They keep hiding the truth and will always come up with the silliest excuses. Explanations that will make people cringe on hearing it. Someone accidentally or stupidly powered on the pump while the diver was still close to it. It will simply suck in the Diver! What kind of error is this? A man cannot work in peace to feed his family again?
This is just high handedness and someone's negligence that should be punished instead of being covered up.

This is why most experts go with their team and ensure some of them are stationed where the operational switch is to ensure nothing is touched during their repairs until they are done!
Rip to the contractor!
This is the best standard of practice. But some contracting firms in Nigeria are NOT compliant with standard safety procedures for their staff in out-of-station work.

During my NYSC, I worked with a power generator sales and service firm. A company called for the maintenance of armoured cable that lead from the genhouse to the main building. We were three that went from the firm for the repair.

I was with the main engineer that was doing the fixing, as I was supporting him with his tools. The other guy was stationed at the change over room. After sometimes, the security gate man of the building that wasn't around when we came, returned and was heading to the change over room to change to NEPA, unaware that work was going on, as there was light in the building next to the one we were working on. But our third that was stationed there shouted at him that work was going on,on the other side of the building.

Imagined if our third person wasn't around in that changing room, the security guy would have powered on the building why our main engineer was still holding and working on the armoured cable
