'' Jonathan said he had approved Alison-Madueke’s use of private jets on some foreign trips. “Any properly incurred incidental or in-kind assistance from third parties would be recorded and reimbursed where applicable,” the BBC quoted the former president as saying in the statement.'' THE QUALITY OF UTTERANCES IN THIS CASE OF DEZIANI FROM AN OTUOKE NATIVE MAN WHO WAS A NIGERIAN PRESIDENT, SUGGESTS THAT ANY PERSON IN NIGERIA CAN BE PRESIDENT IF THE RIGHT CONNECTION WITH A FEW POWERFUL CABALS IS THERE. YOU DON'T NEED TO BE INTELLIGENT OR FULL OF DIVINE WISDOM. LITTLE IS IT A SURPRISE THAT THE COUNTRY IS STILL GROPING IN UTTER DARKNESS AS THE STATE-SHIP HAS BEEN PILOTED IN DECADES BY NATIONAL LEADERS WHO ARE INCAPABLE OF DELIVERING TRANFORMATIONAL GOVERNANCE. WHAT A PITY! WHAT A VICTIMIZED NATION! |

okosodo:How is Tinubu using it as 'distraction alternative'? This case began in the UK courts, during Buhari's administration, so what has Tinubu got to do with it? Your second comment is too daft- so, because Diezani isn't 'the only thief we had in Nigeria', the UK courts should acquit her of all her corruption charges? Did you use this brain to go through your educational journey from primary school? Damn! |

Thewrath:Nigeria suffers from a resource curse (Dutch disease). There is no incentive to be productive since we earn so much from crude oil. Most resource-rich countries insulate their economies from the Dutch disease by saving in an excess crude account (ECA)- a sovereign wealth fund. An ECA reduces the amount of goods imported into an economy and increases the savings, thus strengthening the value of the local currency and reducing the prices of commodities such as electricity, fuel, and food within the local economy. Obasanjo and Yar'Adua saved over 20 billion dollars in Nigeria's ECA. This action protected Nigeria's economy during the Great Financial Crisis (GFC) that occurred between 2008 and 2009. Jonathan wasted all the money. Between 2010 and 2014, oil prices averaged close to $100 per barrel. Jonathan wasted all the money. The effect of such wasteful spending is so difficult to repair. It is similar to putting a fat person in a caloric deficit to lose weight. Personally, I can think of three ways that Nigeria could have repaired the damage. 1. Reduce the cost of governance by firing workers. Merits: The general population will not face inflation, so prices of electricity, food and petrol will not increase. The Naira would have remained stable at N160 to a dollar. Demerits: The workers who lose their government jobs will suffer. The citizens will blame the government for firing workers, and will blame the president. Buhari and Tinubu did not implement this policy. 2. Increase the government's revenue by raising taxes on the rich. Merits: The general population will not face inflation. The rich have a high disposable income, so they will still meet their necessities. The naira would have remained stable. Demerits: The rich would have challenged the government to provide quality services. This would have forced checking and balancing on the government's accounts. Buhari and Tinubu did not implement this policy. 3. Devalue the currency (Naira) while blaming external forces or subsidies: Merits: Imports will reduce, and the currency will become stable after the massive devaluation. Debt will reduce, and capital will flow into the economy. Demerits: Massive inflation will push prices higher, impoverishing the population for decades to come. Buhari did not choose this, and did everything within his power to prevent this from happening. This is the policy solution Tinubu chose. In summary, Jonathan created the problem. Buhari implemented no solution, and Tinubu picked the worst possible solution to protect government workers and the rich, but to destroy the general population. Unfortunately, the rich also cry. |
