ADC Coalition ‘Train’ Still Moving Despite Obi, Others’ Exit — Paul Ibe by ogododo(op): 6:35pm On May 03
A former media aide to ex- Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Paul Ibe, has said the coalition anchored on the African Democratic Congress remains on track despite the exit of key figures, including former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.

Ibe made this known in a statement issued on Sunday, following Obi’s resignation from the party, insisting that the coalition continues to gain momentum ahead of its planned primary elections.

Obi had joined forces with Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi and others in July 2025 to adopt the ADC as a coalition platform aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

After formally becoming a member on January 1, 2026, Obi announced his exit on Sunday, May 3, citing alleged external interference, internal divisions and growing mistrust within the party.

Reacting, Ibe said the coalition was not shaken by the development and wished Obi and other defectors well.

He stressed that their departure had not slowed the movement, noting that more Nigerians were still aligning with the ADC.

The coalition train is still on course. Sadly, some persons have gotten off at what they perceived to be their station. The train keeps moving and picking more passengers along its way. We wish them well.

“Presently, our preoccupation is working with other stakeholders of the ADC to successfully deliver on the party’s primary election timetable within a short period,” he said.

PUNCH Online reports that the African Democratic Congress emerged as a rallying platform for opposition figures seeking to build a formidable alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The coalition drive intensified in mid-2025 when prominent politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, aligned under the ADC to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The move was widely seen as an attempt to consolidate opposition strength following the fragmented outcomes of previous elections, particularly the 2023 presidential poll, where divided opposition votes were considered a key factor in President Bola Tinubu’s victory.

Peter Obi formally joined the ADC on January 1, 2026, after months of speculation about his political future outside his former party. His entry was initially perceived as a boost to the coalition’s credibility, given his strong support base, especially among young and urban voters.

However, internal tensions soon surfaced within the coalition, with reports of disagreements over leadership structure, power-sharing arrangements, and concerns about external influence. These issues culminated in Obi’s resignation on May 3, 2026, barely four months after officially joining the party.

His exit has raised fresh questions about the cohesion and sustainability of the opposition alliance, even as ADC leaders insist that the coalition remains intact and continues to attract new members ahead of its primaries.

A good one coming from Atiku’s camp!

Keep the engines running irrespective of who gets lost. After all, the train will still end up derailing.

Though it’s certain that both ADC and NDC would be losers in 2027, the effort is still required against 2031.

Story oga, it can’t be OK with ADC

Let Atiku deputize Amaechi and let’s see how far they go. Instead of Atiku, let Tinubu finish his last 4 years

The train ran out of energy and stopped moving forward .

Peter Obi gives life to any political party that he joins because his followers are organic .

In the midst of this tumultuous situation, we are confronted with individuals who are now resorting to nonsensical babbling in an apparent attempt to mitigate the damage that has resulted from these events. It's quite disheartening to see such reactions, as they seem to reflect a desperate effort to regain some semblance of control in a rapidly changing political environment.

By the time obi receives pressure from USA he will just run to Afghanistan

Very weak man, Obi has a very useless level of self esteem

Sensible people will not vote Obi except a tribal bigot

Elrufai, the Genius and original Master strategist to the Master tragedist already said in an interview 8 months ago that 2027 will be a three-horse race and will go into a run-off in the worst case scenario. The truth is that, everything will depend on momentum. If the OK ticket builds enough momentum, Tinubu will not have it easy in the South. If he sticks with the muslim-muslim ticket, his little gains in the Christian middlebelt will be eroded and Obi will benefit. If he replaces Shettima, he risks the ire of the Muslim North. Tinubu's best shot is for Obi not to be on the ballot at all. Otherwise, his only pathway will lie in the North, just like in 2023.

Doing the same thing and wanting a different result is called what?

Based on last election
Tinubu - 8,794, 726

Atiku - 6,984,520

Obi - 6,101,533

Kwakwaso - 1, 496,678

It is well. Let's see how it goes.

An already wrecked train. Lol.

Everyone keep saying Obi is scared of primary. He knew who Atiku is na. Was he not his running mate in 2019? You wan tell me say he doesnt know how they won the ticket then? Lol. Amaechi is staying cos he knows he can only be number 2 to Atiku, and that's what he wants. Lol.

Like I wrote earlier, its only a strong disgrace that can stop Atiku. People like him dont know when to stop or let go until they are disgraced. Mark my words, he will definitely come out for 2031, and that will be when all his opponent will disgrace his dollar and him. Only such will stop Atiku.

And Obi the well known jumper. Jumping from one platform to the other. He is already messing himself up because Soludo will use this against him in the nearest future. Mark my words. Make person dey jump up and down like say dem put fire for his yansh. grin Make him dey romance with Boko Haram VP. Na him sabi. He is smart to the extend of allowing desperation to make him choose a VP the US has marked for terrorism. That Obi sef. Just too desperate. Anyone with Pandora, Panama, Parara, etc business so as to evade tax and hide his stolen wealth cannot be trusted.

And Tinuhu....The karma that turned MKO's family line upside down awaits him. Let him not know from MKO and stop sowijg the seeds of disunity everywhere because he has the power to do.

All these people contesting pres etly are parasites.

It is time Obidients face Tinubu and cease attacks on Atiku. They may still stand to benefit from Atiku’s voting bloc. This is politics. For all we know, this defection may be yet another strategy of the coalition.

Many ppl did not vote for obi because they did not believe in his ability to win now we should expect 80 percent vote from South 70 from middle belt 90% from Kano, not less than 50 from Kaduna because and generally more than 40% from north OK is Coming, APC don't know how Nigerians are informed, 2k will not work this time.

ADC has collapsed...there are no two ways about it.

Atiku is a spent force politically....Why, he and some people, appear not to see it is really astonishing.

He is a very bad in political strategy and willpower. His stock nosedived when he couldn't muster the cojones to control Wike in PDP.

In the grand scheme of things, the system is looking beyond him in the current power dynamics.

He should leave the stage now or face the impending/inevitable humiliation...
