In the night of Sunday 03 May 2026, history was made when the state-of-the-art Gateway International Airport in the Iperu-Ilishan axis of Ogun state had its first international flight. Operated by Max Air, the flight departed the airport enroute Saudi Arabia with 345 muslim pilgrims (151 males and 194 females) accompanied by officials of the Ogun State Muslim pilgrims welfare board. Via a statement on Monday 04 May 2026, Káyọ̀dé Akínmádé, special adviser on media and strategy to the state governor, confirmed that the aircraft landed safely at the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. According to him, “The development signals the facility’s readiness to accommodate wide-body operations, reinforcing its compliance with global aviation standards and its capacity for long-haul international travel.” BACKSTORY On 07 October 2025, Ogun State Dàpọ̀ Abíọ́dún inaugurated the first commercial flight at the Gateway International Airport. The governor said the project began in 2021 and was part of his administration’s plan to provide a well-modelled transport system for the state. Source

izombie:Ogun State is about 4 times the size of Lagos. Not every part of Ogun is of close proximity to Lagos. The airport at Iperu is about 2 hours away from Lagos. Let's overlook the fact that eleyi built it in his local government area, the airport is in a strategic location considering it's distance from Lagos. |

I think the people would appreciate him more had he built good roads and improved the standards of living in Ogun. The roads in Ogun state are horrible. Both urban and rural. The airport is good but not necessary. Not now. If Dapo had invested in good roads and perhaps electricity generation and security, his praises would be sang to the 7th heaven. |

No matter what.... As a governor, always ensure that you build outstanding infrastructures or set up the state in sure a way that it will invite investors by itself.... And not to keep money in the bank and walk around claiming you did something wonderf6while you refused paying doctors for a year plus. |

All this mushroom international airport for Hajj only 😅😂🤣 |
| Re: Gateway Airport Records First International Flight (Photos) by SonOfDSoil01: 7:47am On May 05 |
izombie: Ogun state is the most industrialised state in the country…….most of this industries import their raw materials and also exports their produce……..it is only logical that such a state will need an infrastructure such as an airport to aid movement of goods and people, that’s why it is called a cargo airport…….thanks for your attention on this matter ![]() |

NaijaphiliaBlog:So pilgrimage flight is the first international flight that we should be proud of abi? The sooner we have a bold President that will scrap this muslim and christian pilgrimage, the better. |
| Re: Gateway Airport Records First International Flight (Photos) by jmoore(m): 7:50am On May 05 |
Any airport that depends on Hajj for international travel is not viable. What happens when the pilgrimage is over? |
| Re: Gateway Airport Records First International Flight (Photos) by SonOfDSoil01: 7:51am On May 05 |
Gotocourt: pain is that you? The one built in eboyin where billions were sink into build and airport as not recorded a flight since commissioning, you should be worried about that 🤣🤣🤣🤣 |

| Re: Gateway Airport Records First International Flight (Photos) by iguita: 8:04am On May 05 |
Nawa for you oo. You turned the script on the poster🤣🤣. Meaning the airport itself may even serve lagos. If I live in Epe and there is a flight to iperu , I may take that flight rather than land in Ikeja dominique: |

izombie:Lagos had only one airport serving several states. Having other airports around Lagos is long over due. |
| Re: Gateway Airport Records First International Flight (Photos) by omoredia: 8:09am On May 05 |
U can see that the black man can never be redeemed. Of all things to travel for it is to open airport for hajj. Instead of having air port to bring pilgrims to our own local shrines and idols. Una carry our money to do pilgrimage to arabo shrine and idol |
