The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Tunji Disu, has ordered all police personnel to always have their name tags on their uniforms for easy identification.

Disu disclosed that only police personnel who are undercover are exempted from displaying their name tags.

Speaking on Tuesday, Disu said: “All police officers should have their name tags. All of us on the high table have our names apart from the undercover among us so if you look at all the Commissioners of Police we have our name tags, so it’s not our standard.

“All the Commissioners of Police are here and that is why we called this meeting, we have list of things like this that we will want to discuss with the Commissioners of Police, we have told them earlier and we will still let them know that every that happens within their area of jurisdiction falls under their control.”

On the issue of state police, the IGP said: “Since we got the signal that the Federal Government of Nigeria intend to establish State Police and since we are the federal police, we decided to take the bull by the horn and put down our own side of what we believe on how the state police should be run.

“A lot of things were taken into consideration, a lot of comparative analysis was done and it has been transmitted to the National Assembly.”

Those criminals will never comply

Which one have they complied with?

Bail is free?
Don't check citizens phones?
Don't prevent citizens use of camera during interrogation?
Produce court warrant before search of property?
Don't receive bribe in roadblock?

Good step but not enough, most people are shameless. What they probably need is body cam monitored by unknown independent ministry, not fellow corrupt cronies. And most importantly, consequences.

Police officers are becoming increasingly rogue. The way some dress na another wahala. They won't charge at the ones in Abuja making their lives miserable. Na to dey frustrate citizen upandan.

They will rather wear reflectors, to cover name tags. A wonderful country. If we solve policing problems, more than half of our security isues are solved. They need to be paid better too. grin

They normally use their bullet proof vest to cover their names and numbers. That's how they extorted me of 70k at okene-abuja expressway in 2019 and was threatening to kill me

No more Road Blocks! Only God knows how many times we heard that and the level of compliances? Almost ZERO.

The Policemen at Barracks Bus stop at Ojo in Lagos will always wear another shirt on top their Police Uniform in the evening to cover their name tags.

Sir so many occassion we have reported some of your men who supposed to be send to their village for farming unruly behaviours and what did you and psc did about it? Nothing...

I have on many occasions on my visit to Lagos reported AIT Alagbado area of Lagos police unit one of the worst police in the country how they harassed people, hanging in the street corners disturbing innocent people peace everyday till they killed somebody after Makinde Street Bridge that form the boundary between Lagos and Ogun via that axis sometime ago. I have reported the police that mounted roadblock in Ajah main road going to Ayetoro-Epe axis standing in the middle of the road and so many places up till now what did you do about it? Nothing...and you are now talking about name tag nonsense.

The same eay former IGP gone you will go if you fail to sanitise the mess police are caussing across Nigeria, SE worst hit follow by SS then SW surely one good day somebody will be in power and sack half of the police formation as idiagbon did in the past. Enough is enough...[/b]

Also , all the motors used by the police must display the unit, the police station they come from, the area command name and also the special unit number written boldly on them. Even the plate number must not be left out. This will reduce the way they misbehave during stop and Search.

It shouldn't stop there... There should be a website dedicated to details of everyone past and present personnel that has served in the Nigerian security architecture (military, police, civil defense, amotekun, EFCC, ICPC, etc). A publicly accessible database.

A random Nigerian should be able to search a police officer's name and confirm he/she is truly who they claim to be. That will greatly curb impersonation and make accountability a bit easier.
