Breaking: Gov Fubara Submits APC Nomination Form, Set to Challenge Wike-Endorsed Candidate

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has formally submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

The submission marks a major political development as the governor positions himself for a second term under the APC platform, setting the stage for a direct contest against any candidate endorsed by his estranged political ally, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

A high-powered delegation of Rivers APC stakeholders and political leaders had earlier procured the forms on the governor’s behalf at the APC national headquarters in Abuja. The forms were subsequently presented to Governor Fubara, who completed the formal submission process.

Party sources confirmed that Governor Fubara is now awaiting screening by the APC Screening Committee, scheduled for Friday, May 8, 2026. The screening exercise for governorship aspirants is expected to run from May 8 to May 12.

Stakeholders Back Fubara

The delegation, led by Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, representing the Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency, described the purchase and submission of the forms as a grassroots-driven initiative taken in the overriding interest of Rivers people. They emphasised the need for continuity and sustained development under Fubara’s leadership.

Deepening Rift with Wike

The move further intensifies the ongoing political feud between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike, who played a key role in his emergence as governor in 2023 on the PDP platform. Their relationship has since deteriorated into open conflict, resulting in parallel power structures and realignments in the state.

Wike, who still wields significant influence in the PDP in Rivers State, is expected to back a strong candidate to challenge Fubara. Political observers see the governor’s alignment with the APC as a strategic decision aimed at securing federal backing and consolidating his incumbency advantage.

As the screening date approaches, attention is focused on the outcome of Governor Fubara’s clearance and the broader implications for the APC in Rivers State. Supporters view the submission as a bold declaration of political independence and a reflection of the governor’s widespread acceptance across party lines.

The 2027 Rivers governorship race is already shaping up to be one of the most intensely contested in the country, with significant national ramifications. Governor Fubara is expected to engage the media and his supporters in the coming days following the screening exercise.
