This you calculating is not realistic 30k for. Fuel per week and you just going to your estate gate or bus stop and back home

It is really crazy that in 2026 most Nigerians can not afford a car manufactured in 2006.

Please let us reason this!!!!
Re: I Never Knew Owning A Car In Nigeria Was This Expensive Until I Calculated Every by PAQ(m): 11:41am On May 06
1. Owning a car saves cost if you have a family, the larger the more you save.
2. It saves alot of time taken from going to the park or waiting for a Bolt.
3. You are paying for the comfort and privacy of being in your space.
4. Safety, is in your control. How you drive and avoiding one-chance.
5. You can decide to go anywhere and by anytime. Imagine you have an emergency by 3am, nd you need to get to a hospital.

Owning a car is like riding first class, you are paying for the comfort, control and convenience it gives.
Re: I Never Knew Owning A Car In Nigeria Was This Expensive Until I Calculated Every by Biodun1929(m):
I remember whenever I took bike to see my friend a few years ago, he would say, why didn't you come with your car. I tried to breakdown cost of maintaining a car to him and why I don't take my car out all the time. He would say, if na me get car, even if I dey go buy cigar for bus stop, I go drive. I just smiled. He got his car last year, and he told me now he understands why I don't drive my car all the time. We had a good laugh about it.

No disrespect, but someone that has never owned a car can't understand all the unexpected expenses car owners encounters, especially in naija with bad roads, fake spare parts, and expensive fuel. I bought 20k fuel yesterday while going out. Imagine...that 20k fuel is just 15 litres.

Honestly…

I used to think people were exaggerating when they complained about maintaining a car in Nigeria.

Until I sat down one day and calculated everything properly.

And I won’t lie… I was shocked.

Let’s Break It DownOga, stop buy 2nd hand 2nd hand and you'll see that this your thesis does not hold

This is just an average car owner trying to maintain a decent vehicle.

Not even luxury.

Fuel

Depending on movement:
₦10,000 – ₦30,000+ weekly

And if you move around a lot?
Even worse.

Maintenance

This one humbles people fast.

* Oil servicing
* Brake pads
* Suspension
* Tyres
* Battery

One small issue can suddenly become:

> ₦80k
> ₦150k
> ₦300k

Just like that.

Nigerian Roads

This one deserves its own section honestly.

Bad roads damage:

* Tyres
* Shock absorbers
* Alignment
* Underbody

Sometimes it feels like the road is fighting the car personally 😅

Other Hidden Costs

People forget:

* Car wash
* Parking
* Insurance
* Documents
* Traffic stress
* Unexpected repairs

Everything adds up quickly.

WHAT SURPRISED ME MOST

I finally understood why many people now:

* Use Bolt more
* Rent cars occasionally instead
* Or delay buying another vehicle entirely

Because owning a car in Nigeria today is almost like managing another responsibility on its own.

THEN I UNDERSTOOD SOMETHING

A lot of people complain about:

* Car rental prices
* Transport prices
* Driver costs

But after seeing what car owners spend regularly…

I started understanding the business side better.

Especially for operators managing multiple vehicles.

MY HONEST OPINION

At this point, reliability matters more than “forming”.

I’d rather use:

* A well-maintained car
* With peace of mind

Than force luxury and end up stranded somewhere.

LET’S DISCUSS

Car owners here:

What shocked you most after buying your car?

* Fuel?
* Maintenance?
* Nigerian roads?
* Spare parts?

Or do you think people are still exaggerating?

FINAL THOUGHT

Owning a car in Nigeria is no longer just about buying the vehicle…

The real challenge starts AFTER purchase.

You missed it from first step.
10k-30k can only be for a day. Not a week
Tell me where you work in a place like Lagos that you will not use 10 litres a day to/from work?
10 litres is simply 13,000 @ N1,300 per litre (today's fuel price)
This is simply N65,000.00 a week. This is real

Same reason I gave my car to a driver to use for Uber and give me returns weekly because I couldn't cope with the stress.

Back in 2022 I bought a Toyota Corolla and lost sleep. I would wake up in the morning wash it, check oil, check everything then go back to prepare for work then weekends when I am supposed to rest neighbour will wake me to come and move my car for them to go out.

Sometimes out of nowhere lastma, police etc will just choose to be mad or keke drivers will scratch U.

It was messing with my mental health so I just leased it out and have never touched the car since 2022 that I gave it out

Anywhere I want to go with my family I book a ride and go no stress

I spend 20k to 30k daily on fuel. Cos I go around a lot to see clients, sometimes on the mainland. And 20k fuel is just 15lrs. And it's even a 4plug engine. Not a luxury car ooo. E no fit better for APC and Tinubu

Comfort Vs Convenience

OP you didn't add police extortion to your list, VIO harassment and mechanics daylight robbery
Even at these, owning a car is no longer comfort, it is essential and must be properly handled with wisdom - don't go places unnecessarily, if not so so important, stay home and make calls except that journey is paramount.

Finally OP i found your post hilarious and, at the same time, informative.
