Why Do We Use Professional Titles So Much More Than The West by XenialGraphic(op): 6:21am On May 07
This isn’t one of the usual heated or polarizing topics here just a small observation I’m curious about.

In Nigeria, it’s very common to see people attach their profession to their name Engr., Arch., QS, etc. Even economists and some people in finance do it too. It often becomes part of how people introduce themselves or are addressed, even outside formal settings.

But in most Western countries, this is rare. Even people who are fully qualified engineers, architects, economists, or lawyers don’t usually put those titles before their names. The consistent exceptions seem to be:

Doctors (medical).
PhDs (mainly academic settings)
Professors
Military ranks
Political offices

What stands out is that many Western public figures actually have strong professional or academic backgrounds, but they still don’t use those titles publicly.

This came up from my experience on site, where almost everyone is called “engineer” and they’ll respond to it without hesitation.

One of the corporate cultures of an unproductive society. Professionals in a productive and achievement-driven society allow their skills and achievements speak for them.

Why did the moderators add an image of Igbo chieftaincy attire? Looks like an attempt to set Igbo culture up for demonization.

It is because we are focused on qualifications rather than experience and proven delivery of outcomes in all areas of life.

Is it any wonder why we are becoming worse as a society the further away we are from independence year, unlike Asian countries huh

TheBedWench:
The one-drop rule is a social and legal principle of racial classification that was historically prominent in the United States in the 20th century. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ("one drop" of black blood) is considered black (Negro or colored in historical terms).

This concept became codified into the law of some states in the early 20th century. It was associated with the principle of "invisible blackness" that developed after the long history of racial interaction in the South, which had included the hardening of slavery as a racial caste and later segregation. It is an example of  hypodescent, the automatic assignment of children of a mixed union between different socioeconomic or ethnic groups to the group with the lower status, regardless of proportion of ancestry in different groups.[3]

The one-drop rule is defunct in law in the United States and was never codified into federal law.

To avoid being shot like a commoner. Every title gets propped up before they are used to prevent police from tying your hands to your back and use AK-47 to finish you off. Can a professor be chained the way that guy was chained and paraded before being executed?

How many profs have been paraded in boxers for rigging elections?

Upon all the titles we still don’t invent anything. Our mechanical engineers cannot manufacture a vehicle.

Because we have an oppressive society. Everybody just think by getting titles make them superior to their fellow human.

And once they get that title, the next thing you will often hear them say is....
"Do you know who I am?"

You even see consultants in medical field in advanced countries using just Mr before their names but in Nigeria, you see them adding useless titles to their names, rubbish mentality

When I address my international colleagies and students, we do that on first name basis.

But when I get stopped at a police checkpoint in Nigeria, I I introduce myself with my full title and name and ask the police man for his name and rank.

If his name tag and rank is visible, I say to him,
'Good afternoon Inspector Adamu Musa',

I am Dr/Prof/Scientist **** ******, how are you doing today?'

When you introduce yourself properly to the errant policeman and ask him his name and rank, he becomes more cautious, because he doesn't know what you know.

Corrupt Policemen, fear journalists and highly educated people like lawyers and licensed health professionals.

They know that Yahoo boys, have money but do not know how the police works. So they prey on them.

My colleague and schoolmate runs medical centers in Delta State and other different states in the South. He also sells high end medical equipments. He drives Benz worth more than N40million but has never been treated like a Yahoo boy.

Of course he gets stopped, when they find out what he does and what he knows, they search and let him go.

He knows the ranks of all the policemen and introduce himself first while asking for their names, and identity in a courteous manner.

His papers are always intact, If you prove stubborn and try to extort him, he will escalate the matter all the way to Abuja. He is ready to spend that money than to be humiliated. He carries 3 copies of his car papers in the car.

A rogue policeman once tore out his vehicle licence while the other was interrogating him in a stop and search point.

'Oga, your vehicle licence no dey here'. He laughed, went into his car and got another copy, and showed the rogue policeman exactly where he tore out the paper, squeezed it and put it in his pocket.

The policeman appeared frustrated, and shameless combative. 'Oga, carry your motor comot for here'

My friend drove off without engaging them further.

Learn a lesson here, know how the police works and use it to your advantage as a worthy law abiding citizen..

There's no such title as "Scientist". Same with other unprofessional titles like "Pharm", "Nurse", "Arch", "Surv" etc. The westerners that brought education here don't recognise such titles, different if you're a "Dr" or "Prof". Make una emancipate unaself from low self esteem. Having "Mr" or "Mrs" as your title is enough.

The reason you would see that in the West is that Dr, in the medical field, was mainly used for junior health practitioners as a form of honour. The PhDs actually own the title, Dr Most people don't know that the word doctor " means teacher, and this started at the University of Paris, a license granted by the papacy in Rome.
