Dangote is not behaving well. Crude oil is $100/barrel and we are still buying fuel at N1,400. When crude oil rose to $126/barrel, Dangote increase fuel to 1,400, now crude oil is $100/barrel and we are still buying at N1,400 When Monopoly is not good. Competition is good. When there is competition, the consumer enjoys |

Competition puts organizations on their toes. A monopolistic market is not healthy for economic buoyancy. |

Banning of import on any guise is a bad policy. Look at what tariff is doing to Nigeria economy and America economy. There should be competitions. Even dangote have refused and delay to list his promise stock listing.. I commend him for building that refinery but banning import is not a good policy that will favour our economy. Look at rice and other commodity. Only a fair competition that can chackmate inflation and pricing. |

sleek214:LOL...you guys have enjoyed subsidy for so long, you have forgotten how a real live business works. |
| Re: Nigerian Government Issues Fresh Fuel Import Licenses To Petrol Marketers by nairalanda1(m): 8:19am On May 10 |
Lanruze:The issue is, refining in Nigeria has been unprofitable for over 4 decades, because nigerians insisted on subsidy every time the suggestion was made to remove it That drove away investors from investing in refining. Dangote took a great risk to take up a licence to build that his refinery under subsidy regime. He was one of twenty or more licences..out of which five others got busy, the rest just dey there (BUA has since joined the fray). You Nigerians who shout for subsidy, you don't know that subsidy prevents anyone from investing in refinery. That is why I do not support tinubnu despite his removing subsidy, because in 2012 he knew this fact , yet helped Buhari and company to stop subsidy removal under GEJ because politics. Subsidy means that people who try to build refineries would not see their money back. Know this, the world bank knew this that is why they told us, as early as 1992, to remove subsidy. Yes they did...because if we had done so back then, by now we would have had more refineries, and all the NNPC refineries would still be working. We would have been like an export hub for many of our fellow African countries. BUt we said no because we wanted cheap fuel.... When a government tries to make things cheap, it is setting a trap for future generations. |

| Re: Nigerian Government Issues Fresh Fuel Import Licenses To Petrol Marketers by JuanDeDios: 8:33am On May 10 |
adenigga:Good. There should be import licenses. We don't want importation, but that should be achieved by market forces, not fiat. The moment you start restricting imports, you're creating a situation that will lead to predatory pricing, which hurts the people. |
| Re: Nigerian Government Issues Fresh Fuel Import Licenses To Petrol Marketers by orikoku: 8:34am On May 10 |
Watch how dangote will bring down the price this week, the guy no just send anybody papa. Those marketers too are criminals. |
| Re: Nigerian Government Issues Fresh Fuel Import Licenses To Petrol Marketers by JuanDeDios: 8:35am On May 10 |
nairalanda1:Well, subsidy is gone now. No need to spoil the market with import restrictions. The man on the street loses out both ways if you remove subsidy and then restrict import such that certain player(s) can price the products as they like. Let the market play out – that's what subsidy removal is about. |

Does Togo have crude oil? I am not sure theuyso. Have you cared to find out how much it cost at Togo [/quote] |
| Re: Nigerian Government Issues Fresh Fuel Import Licenses To Petrol Marketers by nairalanda1(m): 8:37am On May 10 |
JuanDeDios:Yes, market got to do what market got to do. Nigerians have to get used to what other countries , including saner climes are used to. Pure capitalism. Capitalism is not a fair system, but unfortunately it's the only system that attracts money and investment easily. I wish it wasn't so. In my dream world, everyone go pay N100 Per liter for fuel today..but that would eat nearly half of our budget with disastrous consequences. |
| Re: Nigerian Government Issues Fresh Fuel Import Licenses To Petrol Marketers by JuanDeDios: 8:39am On May 10 |
JuanDeDios:Well, that's also an argument that marketers bring in substandard products to outcompete local refiners. So regulatory oversights must be tightened. |
| Re: Nigerian Government Issues Fresh Fuel Import Licenses To Petrol Marketers by nairalanda1(m): 8:41am On May 10 |
Drsnives:Ghana has crude oil, as does Niger.Ghana is selling fuel at N1925 per liter. Niger is selling at N1216 per liter. Togo is also buying a lot of fuel from Dangote refinery right now. Finally having a refinery at home does not mean cheap fuel. Crude oil is expensive to extract...and refine to standard. Plus , Dangote refinery is competing internationally. (I have seen oil workers in Nigeria apply for foreign jobs....). Add taxes, and the cost of your fuel is bound to be high. |

| Re: Nigerian Government Issues Fresh Fuel Import Licenses To Petrol Marketers by Teymanhenry(f): 9:05am On May 10 |
That’s how healthy competition works. Dangote Refinery will simply study the real cost marketers incur importing fuel; landing cost, shipping, duties, transportation and forex risks, then offer a slightly cheaper and more convenient local alternative. For marketers, it becomes a business decision: buy imported fuel with all the stress and extra costs, or buy locally at a better margin. In the end, competition benefits consumers through better pricing, stability and value for money. |
