11 die as vehicle plunges off bridge on Lagos-Abeokuta expressway

No fewer than 11 people have lost their lives after a vehicle plunged off the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Afolabi Odunsi.

Odunsi said that the accident occurred earlier in the night.

According to Odunsi, the crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which reportedly somersaulted and plunged off the bridge.

He noted that all 11 occupants of the vehicle, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, died in the accident.

Odunsi stated that operatives of the FRSC rescue team from the Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene following the incident.

“The incident involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact.

“All 11 people on board, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the crash,” the statement partly read.

He added that FRSC personnel, with support from members of the local community, dismantled the vehicle to recover the bodies of the victims.

According to him, the remains of the deceased were deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

“FRSC personnel, with help from the local community, dismantled the vehicle to recover the bodies. The deceased have been moved to the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo.

“The preliminary report cites driving under the influence and overloading as the probable causes,” he added.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, advised motorists travelling along the Abeokuta-Lagos route to exercise caution, particularly during night journeys.

He also commiserated with the families of the deceased victims.

“The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, advised travellers on the Abeokuta-Lagos route to exercise extreme caution, especially when driving at night.

“He also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased,” the statement read.

PUNCH Metro had earlier reported several fatal crashes along major highways in Ogun state, with road safety officials repeatedly warning motorists against speeding, drunk driving, and overloading.

Accident remains one of the biggest killers of Nigerians, but as we are dealing with other killers such as terrorism, banditry etc, no one seems to pay attention to the number of lives lost daily to road accidents.

May their souls Rest In Peace
Re: 11 Die In Midnight Crash On Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway by Enddy50ty(m): 2:14pm On May 11
This is one of the reasons why I hate night journeys.

The cause of this accident may be something as little as poor lighting on the vehicle that could easily have been avoided if they had travelled by day.

May their souls rest in peace 🪦 Amen 🙏

Speeding is the reason most of the time. People easily forget they are not made of steel.

Stop handing out drivers' licenses like they are birthrights.

Make driving education and passing of road tests compulsory and treat it with every force of the law.

An average Nigerian driver doesn't know how to drive... I keep saying this!

Even more than half of traffic bottlenecks are caused by this poor driving attitudes and lawlessness.

A friend of mine told me he stopped praying for "Journey mercies" the day he started living and commuting abroad

Another lady said she never knew driving could be fun and SAFE till she relocated and started driving in Europe.

Something is seriously wrong with many of you Nigerians living in Nigeria...! Spits!!!

I remembered just after this bridge, like 2 meters while coming back from a wedding at Ijebu, we passed through Abeokuta back.
We never knew this 2 drivers of the hiace bus I was inside and the other vehicle of the groom’s friends have promised to do a race test to know who was the fastest among the 2.
Na so the other guys vehicle while driving crazingly hit a pothole immediately after this bridge and e just match brake suddenly na so our hiace bus Wey dey follow am bumper to bumper hit am with full force. We stopped, it took us 2 minutes before we knew where their vehicle was, not knowing it had fell into the ditch below, lucky for them they were all alive with no injury. Na only the vehicle wreck
St*pid foo*s risking their life with car race

This is how governments fails and kill people due to negligence, who knows if it was this exact spot this people just died?

Sigh... It's a bit early for this needless defensiveness.

Did I state that poor driving doesn't happen anywhere else?! But, what about the prevalence? Is it the same?!!

How many accidents compared to ours?! How many laws are enforced comparatively?!! Are there even driving rules in your nation and who enforces them?!!

An average Nigerian driver has no business on the road behind a wheel because he is either untrained, uneducated/ignorant about basic road rules, and largely never took nor passed a driving test.

There really is no room for argument here, Sir.

Some of these guys don't even have a driver's license or probably has one they have not renewed in donkey years.

Road accidents are finishing Nigerians.

Govts build better roads these days all over the country.
But non trained drivers and unservicable vehicles now send too many people to untimely death in Nigeria.

In the countries that manufacture vehicles, it's a rigorous training before one is licenced to drive a vehicle on the road.

Angelfrost, somehow I disagree with you.
I am a retired professional driver of over 20yrs with no major accident till I retired.
But the truth is, sometimes even the most careful and gentlemen drivers have dastardly accident in Nigeria.
I have not been abroad o but with documentary and movies of the western world I have seen, you can't compare there to here.
With western world's clean and well paved roads, I can drive 10km at night without headlights. I am not joking.
But that can't be said in Nigeria, I have driven at night with full headlights on, and very careful. But I still entered into potholes unknowingly.
.
Yes, I am not disputing our drivers don't have their own fault and excesses too, but bad roads are among the major things causing accident here than abroad.

Yes but at same time who is to blame. When you ask for graduate in everything like they are actually graduate that graduated... Most just using influence and our politicians and big men know better. Use influence like that is what get the job done. Even after getting the job done what about getting the job better. It's. High time y'all start asking right questions from your pay masters.
