Short Story: The Selfish Neighbor by tonystark007(op): 3:05pm On Apr 12
We had a small get-together in our compound one evening. That was actually the first time I properly spoke to one of my neighbors. Funny enough, after a few drinks, we discovered his office is just a few buildings away from mine.

Meanwhile, I had been living in that compound for over a year and we had never vibed like that. Lagos can be like that, everybody just minding their business.

Later that night, after everything had ended and people had gone back inside, I heard a knock on my door. I opened it and saw him standing there with a friendly smile. He said he’d like to follow me to work the next day since we were heading the same direction.

I said sure, no problem

The next morning, I came out and saw four people standing there. Him… and three others. Two guys and one lady.

He quickly explained that they were his colleagues and begged me to help carry them too

The lady alone looked like two people combined. Well, I just nodded and smiled. What else could I do? I told them to enter.

That evening, when I closed from work and drove out of the office gate, I saw the same four of them standing there, waving at me and smiling like we were friends

I just stopped and picked them again.

The next morning, I came out of my house and saw the four of them again

Ahh!
Do you people sleep here?

They laughed and said they came early so they won’t miss me.

I looked at my neighbor. He avoided my eyes at first, then gave me one small sheepish smile

I carried them again

For one month I carried this people every morning and evening

Then one day, my car shock absorber got bad. The car started giving me issues, so I parked it and took it to the mechanic.

That evening, my neighbor saw me outside and asked about the car. I told him what happened. He just shook his head and said, “Ah, car wahala.”

I said, “Yes o,” and went inside.

The next morning, I came out and stood by the road waiting for a bike to take me to the bus stop. As I was there, I saw my neighbor enter a car. It was an Uber.

He saw me. He waved.
I waved back.

And that was it.

He didn’t ask me if I wanted to join him or let’s go together, he just sat down at the back like a big man and they drove off

For the entire week my car was at the mechanic, I didn’t see those his colleagues. Not once.

The day my car finally came back, he saw me driving in and came to greet me like nothing happened. “Ah, it’s fixed now? Thank God o!” He even congratulated me.

The next morning, I came out… and there they were. The four of them, standing beside my car… Complete squad!

They greeted me, “Good morning, boss!”

Boss ke?

I smiled calmly, opened my car door, entered, and locked it.

They came and pulled the handle.

Nothing.

My neighbor knocked on the window. I wound it down small, just enough to hear him

He said, “We’re ready.”

I said, “SET”

He laughed, thinking I was joking.

I shouted, “GO!!!”

Then I started the engine and drove off.

The confusion on his face… beautiful.

In my side mirror, I saw all four of them standing there, looking like village witches and wizard WhatsApp group

Was I wrong? Do you think they deserved it?

The End

Never start what you cannot continue.

It's on the first day you should have dropped all of them a hint that you taking them to work that day was a one off and would not be repeated the following day.

A neighbour who always join your free ride to save money cannot suddenly order uber ride. The ride he joined might be another free ride available in the neighbourhood. Not inviting his other three colleagues to this free ride shows there is only one free slot available .

They deserved more than that. That was how I carried my colleagues to and from work for more than 3 years, but never have they contributed even 1 naira for fuel for that number of years. This is not just short distance oo, but over an hour drive from where we live. Some people are so selfish and wicked.

Your mode of payback was childish but message effectively communicated.
Next time don't start doing routine favours to strangers, familiar friends are the only exception though.

What if the Uber was a free ride. You should have asked before concluding. At least they asked you before you granted them. You were standing and looking at him inside the Uber, does he even know if you are going out or not. Anyway. Congratulations

Boss, You are not wrong in anyway. Sometimes it’s good to make people feel, what life is really is.
But if I am in your shoes , this is based on the result of series of incidents like this . I would take hm and the other guys ,then we shall do some talking on our way to work and on our way back. I would either end up straightening him or he personally would not want to ride in my car again ….
Telling a friend or a neighbor truth, doesn’t make you mean.

Might be fictional but surely possible

I could say to you that you should have told him how you felt earlier but thinking about it, even the colleagues never bothered to send you a message of support or whatever.
This is feasible cuz I've had experience close to this.

Oga any heartache is a sin against your own creator.. this life is meant to be lived.. you don’t go hurting yourself to please others.. love you Neignhour as you love yourself.. if you don’t care for yourself how can you care for your Neignhour .. if you’re able to cause you self heart ache then your Neignhours will get more than heartache .. so do preach that thing better to suffer.. people don’t suffer doing right thing.. right thing feel right.. even you mind getting pleased with it..

All I can say is that human these days have become very selfish and self centered. You will go out of your way to help them when they are in need, but the moment you need just a little of their help they bolt and act like they don't know you.
The term "one good turn deserves another" means nothing to them.

People are interesting. So within the one month period when you carried them, they never offered to fuel your car? I know that kind too well, have had my fair share with them. That guy has no shame. You ask for a ride and then bring a whole clan. Smh.
