The problem is, tinubu and his predecessors are all alike.

That he removed subsidy does not change that idea, tinubu was forced to remove subsidy because there was no extra money in the budget...but then he brought it back, only for the financial pressure to force him to remove it again.

Nigerians want the government to subsidise everything they use and to pay for their housing , water supply, and so forth while they live the good life. Nothing fundamentally wrong with that, except that they want the government to spread 100 billion dollars on a good day among 230 million people.

That cannot work. Unless there is borrowing...and already a lot of the 100 billion dollars has gone to pay off oid debts.

Yes , there is corruption, and corruption is happening because the system encourages it. When you have an issue where most do not pay tax...as seen in Nigeria, and by tax, I mean personal income tax, what you have is a system where there is sharing of money, and the closer one is to where the money is shared, the more the corruption. And because Nigerians are not paying a chunk of their income in tax, like the whites do, they are not incentivised to fight for better leadership. Result is that leadership becomes an ethnic game...

And that is why we keep on having tinubus.

But most of you don';t get it. That is why many here think I am supporting tinubu, a man who left Lagos worse than it was before he came, and who is currently starving the power sector by his polices., among other things. And yes we suffer because we are a poor country. But ask Nigerians to vote for a leader who will take us to imprved productivity and fiscal discipline, and dem go call you agbasoeosde. The same tinubu that is doing the opposite of what one argues for.

That's why I am pissed with this site, and with online Nigeria. You guys want the easy way out, and your government always obliges. Then you cry when things don't change.
By your observation, Which politician can give us the best outcome, amongst the current candidates?

Nigerians need to understand that 8 years of Buhari totally finished Nigeria. The country was effectively bankrupt. Reform is never easy, but its starting to bear fruit. The Niara is now relatively stable, even with the war in Iran. I don't really like Tinubu, but in all honesty he's the best we have right now.
Who dey heck brought in Buhari? Did u people praised Buhari? At least Tinubu supported him. And how do u want me to ask my governor? The same governors who ass lick president and gets protected? Who controls EFCC? is it not the center? Why cant they go after them?
If I protest now, wont u people arrest me?

Since I was born, this is the first time Nigeria hardship hit me hard and mind you, my income didnt drop. Stayed same but I am battling to keep up with basic quality of life.
Like, man, I hate this man with so much passion. I wish elections are truly free and fair. I want him out! That man is wicked. How can someone be this clueless? He said the reason to remove fuel subsidy was because of smuggling. So, baba couldnt tackle such corruption, he rather took money and gave to governors. The same governors sing on his mandate we stand, so they are safe. WTF is this? Bro, I am running mad here. I am so pained.
Like when I drive out and see the heat Nigerians have to live in and do business without electricity, I weep. Who did we offend?
I closed down two businesses last year because of fuel. Damn!
They are coming to call you IGBO For complaining about how hard this country is.

See reasoning.....with 51 billion dollars in external debt we can never go bankrupt now.

Now, someone is talking. I fall under such bracket of earning and I am poor. It is a complete disaster except u are ready to completely shut down ur standard of living. Like I said, Tinubu introducing a wider tax is terrible. I dont know if journalists dont ask these guys questions. We cant copy western world, no na. They were heavily industrielized and producing economy. We are not, we import and heavy taxing and import dependant economy is disaster. Why cant someone talk to these men? According to Tinubu, if u earn between 25m per year, u are an executive earner and if u are someone who works online, ur tax deductable wont be much, so u will be paying around 8m plus as tax at the end of the year. Even without income tax, u barely will save 3m out of such earning especially for young couples building life. Where will someone meet all their responsibilities, and still save up 8million to pay Tinubu? Like how na? Come on, this man should read our comments. He needs to be voted out. This is why I love South Africans.
He reads it and that's why they did not want any opposition in 2027. Now that has failed, they turned to Igbo v Yoruba tactics, that is now failing too. Their last card now is voter suppression and sharing of money to the poorest poor.

My dear brother, when someone asks you what Peter Obi will do differently, kindly know that one na your personal enemy. As we speak, the fuel, education, electricity, and health subsidies have been removed. So, where are the massive subsidy savings they told us would be used to turn Nigeria into Dubai? Well, it is being stolen and diverted into private pockets.
Without ready money, what do those evul men in power do? They go and borrow money abroad to develop this country, then steal the money and go to borrow more. As we speak, this government has borrowed more than all the previous governments combined and is borrowing more almost daily. And through all that, one of their minions will be asking you what Peter Obi would do differently. Stone am
It's like they agree they have failed but still want to contest, because they feel the other person will not do anything differently.

I was battling with network issues recently, and it reminded me how difficult it has become to survive here. There is no stable electricity. Most of us survive on generators.

South Africa achieved significant progress in electricity within two years, yet after four years, nothing meaningful has changed here. It is still the same story and the same daily struggle.

Now, remove emotions for a moment and look at the reality:

A kilogram of gas is about ₦1,400. That is extremely high for a country with very low salaries.
A crate of eggs is between ₦5,500 and ₦6,000.
A bag of cement is around ₦12,000. This is one of the reasons house rent has skyrocketed, because many citizens can no longer afford to build homes.
Renting a 2-bedroom apartment in most state capitals now starts from about ₦2.5 million and above. That is insane for a country where the majority of citizens are struggling financially.
Fuel is around ₦1,400 per litre.

Fuel powers our generators. If you run two businesses, you may need two generators.

For someone like me who works online, I need electricity almost 24/7. A huge part of my income goes into fueling and servicing generators because, most nights, my generator runs till morning. I work with clients across different time zones, sometimes at 2AM.

What does all of this mean?

Our purchasing power has dropped drastically.

Yet, despite these realities, the tax burden keeps increasing.

I honestly want to ask: does the government truly understand what Nigerians are going through?

Even someone earning ₦25m–₦30m yearly in today’s Nigeria is not necessarily living comfortably. A large percentage of that income already goes into solving basic social problems and surviving.

You pay for:

Electricity
Security
Healthcare
Transportation
Water
Education

Everything.

So where exactly is the money left to pay huge taxes from?

How many Nigerians can genuinely save millions yearly after handling all their responsibilities as parents, children, and providers?

To survive, many people are already being forced to reduce their quality of life:

Cutting down electricity usage despite terrible heat
Moving children from good schools
Switching from bottled water to sachet water
Selling better cars for cheaper alternatives because of fuel costs
Cancelling vacations and basic comfort

The painful part is that many self-employed Nigerians hustle endlessly just to stay afloat, yet at the end of the year, they are still expected to pay heavy taxes.

One of my friends, despite earning what many would call “good money,” is already in debt because of school fees and living expenses. Yet, government expectations are based only on income figures, not the harsh realities behind those figures.

And remember, this is a country where many parents depend on their children financially just to survive.

Honestly, many leaders cannot relate to what ordinary Nigerians are facing because:

Their electricity is sorted
Their security is sorted
Their healthcare is sorted
Their feeding is sorted

So they may never truly feel the pain of the average citizen.

Dear Nigerian leaders, Nigerians are suffering.

We are exhausted.

What could be done differently?

Reduce excessive tax burdens. Maybe 3 percent for now. Please, this country is poor or increase the threshold to maybe 50m per year if you truly wants to target the rich for income tax.
Fix electricity.
Tackle corruption seriously.
Improve security so farmers can return to farms safely.
Support the tech economy so more young people can earn online.
Invest in skills and digital opportunities.
Cut down excessive government spending and luxury packages for politicians.

Nigeria is a poor country with multidimensional poverty. In many homes, one working person carries the burden of an entire extended family.

Tax should not be the first priority when citizens are already struggling to survive.

As I write this now, my area is in complete darkness again. Families will spend heavily on fuel tonight just to have light for a few hours.

So I ask again: after paying for survival, where exactly should the tax money come from?

We are tired.

The bills are too much.

please can someone push this to front page?

I want to understand why the sacrfice must be done by the suffering masses instead of the politicians. I am curios to know why. Why must I suffer what I didn't cause?
/
You asked for one reason. But I will give you two reasons. I am glad you didn't ask for a "good" reason.

1. He is a Yoruba.
2. He is a muslim.

A typical Nigerian will definitely vote tribe and religion over personal or communal interests. After voting, they join the rest to bitch, whine, wail and complain. It is a generational curse.

The second AC I have disconnected that one since. My bedroom AC, na off and on I dey do am now. Money wey I dey use sub light alone is more than my annual rent.
Since this year, na only once I don sub DStv. Next will be during world cup.

Before 2024, I used to cook soup and stew with 15k-20k weekly. Right now, na 50k weekly and we still have to squeeze the portioning and the volume of water to ensure it lasts one full week.

Tinubu was not forced into these decisions, he chose them. Yar’Adua already showed Nigerians that a president can reverse policies introduced by a predecessor if he truly wants to.

When Obasanjo, even with good intentions, attempted to remove fuel subsidy and privatize NNPC, Yar’Adua reversed those policies immediately after assuming office. Not necessarily because he completely opposed them, but because he understood the need to properly study their impact before implementation.

You said you lived in Lagos during Tinubu’s tenure as governor, so you should understand the kind of leadership he represented. This is someone who never genuinely cared about the welfare of ordinary people. I still remember when many communities enjoyed pipe-borne water through the Ministry of Water Resources. Over time, basic social benefits disappeared while taxes and levies kept increasing.

He knows how to generate and collect money, but not how to use that money to improve the lives of the people from whom it was collected.

Nobody has convincingly explained why Lagos State, the richest state in Nigeria, is also one of the most indebted. Lagos generates in one month what some states like Akwa Ibom may not generate in an entire year, yet when you visit Akwa Ibom, you can clearly see visible development and infrastructure compared to the chaos and underdevelopment many people keep celebrating in Lagos.
