I love the piece u wrote, very smart and intelligent. I keep saying this same thing. We have no business paying income tax. Like no way. Eurpeans never had the type of resources we have. All we need is proper management of our resources, use the income from resources and build public infrastrcuture, not to pay politicians and their families so well.
Build our educational system so we can start converting our raw resources into finished goods. Like our lithium into batteries instead of selling the material alone to China. But no, these muda fukers think that taxing me up to 25 percent is the best. Just copyying Europeans blindly. Europeans wont be this wicked to their people if they have half of what Africans have. Africans have land for agriculture. Like mad, we can be self sufficient. I honestly dont know who cursed this continent and her leaders and people.
An oil and gas rich nation taxing her citiznes 25 percent is mindblowing. Like mind blowing, after still taxing VAT, import, banking services, everything we get from FG, we pay for it such as drivers lincense, VISA, all documents are paid for. So, WTF is this guy's doing exactly?
All Nigeria needs is proper resource management, cut down on the too much money spent on politicians and block corruption to the core. none of these politicians want to work actually. That is the honest truth
They take politics as their job. In America people resign to focus on their business, here it's opposite.

Electricity generation has been removed from the exclusive list. Have you complained to your state governor?
Nigerians need to understand that 8 years of Buhari totally finished Nigeria. The country was effectively bankrupt. Reform is never easy, but its starting to bear fruit. The Niara is now relatively stable, even with the war in Iran. I don't really like Tinubu, but in all honesty he's the best we have right now.
You guys are cunning.

The Naira is stable but at a ridiculously high spot. Does it have to be? No

Tinubu jacked it up by forcing a floating currency policy. That policy was economic suicide for a country that is not industrialised.

The policy is supposed to be a long term goal after govt must have repositioned the economy to be industrialised to a reasonable extent.

If indeed buhari's mismanagement of the economy is the cause of all these problems, why is tinubu not prosecuting the culprits and recovering stollen funds so that govt can stop borrowing and over taxing the masses?

Buhari was a failure yet apc recently gave him a cheap ticket to represent at the nass.

Yall supporting apc, una know say una dey whine us but no problem.

If not that free fair election in 2027 is not assured, una for no get mind dey campaign for tinubu.

ibabz:
Tinubu was not forced into these decisions, he chose them. Yar’Adua already showed Nigerians that a president can reverse policies introduced by a predecessor if he truly wants to.

When Obasanjo, even with good intentions, attempted to remove fuel subsidy and privatize NNPC, Yar’Adua reversed those policies immediately after assuming office. Not necessarily because he completely opposed them, but because he understood the need to properly study their impact before implementation.
And the above decision by Yaradua contributed to the debt that eventually forced the removal of the subsidy anyway.
You guys do not understand how subsidy wrecked our refineries, and oil sector. We were warned to remvoe it in 1993, we said no. Then we refined all the fuel consumed here. 400000 bpd. BY 2011 it was down to 90000 bpd.

Subsidy wrecked the refineries. It caused the corruption and devastation of our economy, and made it worse.

Yaradua also benefited from high oil prices of 140 dollars and above for much of 2008. Even then paying for subsides was problematic.

You said you lived in Lagos during Tinubu’s tenure as governor, so you should understand the kind of leadership he represented. This is someone who never genuinely cared about the welfare of ordinary people. I still remember when many communities enjoyed pipe-borne water through the Ministry of Water Resources. Over time, basic social benefits disappeared while taxes and levies kept increasing.

He knows how to generate and collect money, but not how to use that money to improve the lives of the people from whom it was collected.
Yes, which is why I am approaching this from the fact that I never supported the man.

Plus, I didn't live in Lagos, but visited after he left office. Could see his praise singers were wrong off the bat.

Nobody has convincingly explained why Lagos State, the richest state in Nigeria, is also one of the most indebted. Lagos generates in one month what some states like Akwa Ibom may not generate in an entire year, yet when you visit Akwa Ibom, you can clearly see visible development and infrastructure compared to the chaos and underdevelopment many people keep celebrating in Lagos.
Ahem, Nigeria is a poor country overall. The main problem with government is that it refuses to use our natural resources to make exportable goods which can be taxed properly. Rather, it prefers to export oil and other things, and share the money.

Again , our refineries, for example. If subsidy had gone in 1993, and deregulation had happened back then , yes we would have suffered. Yes, there would have been pain, but by 2010, we would have been a major hub for refined products for a large part of Africa, and our oil secotr would have been larger than this.

But we refuse to do things like that, we refuse and have refused to deregulate the power sector, thus stifling investment into the sector, which in turn stifles industrial growth. We underpaid for the railways because cheap services, thus preventing its expansion and investment into it.

And the result is that we are a poor nation

And it is all because we want cheap things.

And all that led to the subsidy removal you don't like because debt was accumulated over the years from trying to keep fuel and other things at prices that made no sense because 'we are an oil nation)

The day I understood how subsidy worked in 2011, was the day my oppistion to its removal ended, and the day I began to understand why the same complaints on this trhead, were made 10 years ago, 20 years ago, even 40 or 50 years ago.

We better face reality. It does not make tinubu a good leader.

When Obasanjo came as Military Head of State, to encourage made in Nigeria, he changed his official vehicle to Pueguot. We know what else everyone did when he did that. What did Tinubu do? Bought luxurious vehicles, a yatch and a plane.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mZ4bQFRDNk

In March 1979, Head of State General Olusegun Obasanjo arrived in his official Peugeot 504 to open the newly built Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.

The iconic Peugeot 504 was a staple of General Obasanjo’s military administration. He famously mandated its use for government officials to cut down on the wasteful spending of exotic vehicles and promote local assembly plants.

On March 15, 1979, Obasanjo arrived in this vehicle alongside his security detail to officially commission the international airport, marking a major milestone in Nigeria's aviation development. Later that year, on October 1, 1979, Obasanjo used this same Peugeot 504 to drive Nigeria's first democratically elected executive president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, to his inauguration, ending years of military rule.
When he came back the second time, foreign juice was the norm at government functions. Obasanjo banned it and said it must be made in Nigeria juice and water. That's when Nigerian producers started taking the table at events. Leadership is not rocket science. There's a lot the leader can do so don't come sermonize us here on tPain.

I was battling with network issues recently, and it reminded me how difficult it has become to survive here. There is no stable electricity. Most of us survive on generators.

South Africa achieved significant progress in electricity within two years, yet after four years, nothing meaningful has changed here. It is still the same story and the same daily struggle.

Now, remove emotions for a moment and look at the reality:

A kilogram of gas is about ₦1,400. That is extremely high for a country with very low salaries.
A crate of eggs is between ₦5,500 and ₦6,000.
A bag of cement is around ₦12,000. This is one of the reasons house rent has skyrocketed, because many citizens can no longer afford to build homes.
Renting a 2-bedroom apartment in most state capitals now starts from about ₦2.5 million and above. That is insane for a country where the majority of citizens are struggling financially.
Fuel is around ₦1,400 per litre.

Fuel powers our generators. If you run two businesses, you may need two generators.

For someone like me who works online, I need electricity almost 24/7. A huge part of my income goes into fueling and servicing generators because, most nights, my generator runs till morning. I work with clients across different time zones, sometimes at 2AM.

What does all of this mean?

Our purchasing power has dropped drastically.

Yet, despite these realities, the tax burden keeps increasing.

I honestly want to ask: does the government truly understand what Nigerians are going through?

Even someone earning ₦25m–₦30m yearly in today’s Nigeria is not necessarily living comfortably. A large percentage of that income already goes into solving basic social problems and surviving.

You pay for:

Electricity
Security
Healthcare
Transportation
Water
Education

Everything.

So where exactly is the money left to pay huge taxes from?

How many Nigerians can genuinely save millions yearly after handling all their responsibilities as parents, children, and providers?

To survive, many people are already being forced to reduce their quality of life:

Cutting down electricity usage despite terrible heat
Moving children from good schools
Switching from bottled water to sachet water
Selling better cars for cheaper alternatives because of fuel costs
Cancelling vacations and basic comfort

The painful part is that many self-employed Nigerians hustle endlessly just to stay afloat, yet at the end of the year, they are still expected to pay heavy taxes.

One of my friends, despite earning what many would call “good money,” is already in debt because of school fees and living expenses. Yet, government expectations are based only on income figures, not the harsh realities behind those figures.

And remember, this is a country where many parents depend on their children financially just to survive.

Honestly, many leaders cannot relate to what ordinary Nigerians are facing because:

Their electricity is sorted
Their security is sorted
Their healthcare is sorted
Their feeding is sorted

So they may never truly feel the pain of the average citizen.

Dear Nigerian leaders, Nigerians are suffering.

We are exhausted.

What could be done differently?

Reduce excessive tax burdens. Maybe 3 percent for now. Please, this country is poor or increase the threshold to maybe 50m per year if you truly wants to target the rich for income tax.
Fix electricity.
Tackle corruption seriously.
Improve security so farmers can return to farms safely.
Support the tech economy so more young people can earn online.
Invest in skills and digital opportunities.
Cut down excessive government spending and luxury packages for politicians.

Nigeria is a poor country with multidimensional poverty. In many homes, one working person carries the burden of an entire extended family.

Tax should not be the first priority when citizens are already struggling to survive.

As I write this now, my area is in complete darkness again. Families will spend heavily on fuel tonight just to have light for a few hours.

So I ask again: after paying for survival, where exactly should the tax money come from?
We are tired.

The bills are too much.

please can someone push this to front page?

I want to understand why the sacrfice must be done by the suffering masses instead of the politicians. I am curios to know why. Why must I suffer what I didn't cause?

Which new course is tinubu charting man?

What king of stupid investors will come to a country without stable electricity in 2026.

No electricity, no security. What new course are you talking?

They are busy constructing coastal road as a vessel to embezzle funds without really empowering the economy.

For any country that wants to develop, the first none negotiable infrastructure is stable electricity.

Tinubu has spent 3 years in govt and has not produced any result regarding electricity, just same old sh1t.

I know yall who talk like this are paid to do so but we will still reply you to kill your evil narrative
You seem to be the most reasonable among those who replied me, so I would respond to what you typed.

Star this post for the future, by 12noon to 1pm on the election day, the game is over. Tinubu has won.

You referred to "rigging" - so let's agree with you that Tinubu will rig, so by your calculation, the oppositions are saint - they won't rig, right?

So, you ask for infrastructure, yet you condemned the construction of coastal roads. How contradictory can you be? Go and explain this to people of akwa ibom, cross river etc, that they should be denied access to Lagos via coastal road, and come and explain how you will survive being lynched. No matter what Tinubu does, he can't be right with you but it doesn't matter - he will win squarely without your support..

Did you miss it yesterday? Nigeria military and the US neutralised a terrorist yesterday. No country can guarantee 100 percent security. Hey, have you ever been to the US? Visit the US if you are fortunate enough to be issued a visa, which I doubt anyway and let's revisit this conversation in term of security.

If you are a student of engineering, electricity is not something you invest on and start generating the dividends almost immediately. It takes time. It takes process. Be educated.

Under Tinubu leadership, Nigeria has attracted over 20 billion dollars foreign direct investment already. Let me point you to a reference in case you miss the good news - https://www.google.com/amp/s/thenationonlineng.net/tinubu-nigeria-attracted-20b-foreign-investments-this-year/amp/

I thought you said no foreign investor would come to Nigeria. Take that back. We are moving, you better join the train or be left behind

My principle is this:
Politicians need to start to fear losing election. They need to understand that 2 terms is not their birth right!
The moment they understand that the masses can stand in one voice, that thhe masses can protest and hold govt accountable, make demands, they will begin to struggle to make the lives of the masses better instead of the current system of enriching the few elites who help them control the masses.
So, I was of the opionion that we shouldnt have rewarded Buhari with another term. It is almost like a birth right. Now, even if u dont perform, governors feel like 2 terms are their rights, same as presidents. We need to stop it.
So, this president has performed badly, unprepared, and should be voted out, whoever wins is none of my business but if that person also fails, we should vote him out. That is my believe.
I will always judge any president with the following:
Were they able to fix our electoral system (core)
Did they make policies that affected the elites more?
How far with electricity?
How about public schools for primary and secondary educations?
How about our purchasing power?
How about security? Can we stop getting kidnapped?
I dont know how you brought in tribalism here. Look bro, I am sick and tired of this una lame excuses. Pls, if a northerner will return my purchasing power so that I can go to luxury hotel at least twice each year and spend 5 days to relax and rest from work, I will glaldy vote him. I dont give a Bleep about any tribe. I just wnt a better countrry. I wnt to be able to drive my V6 sporty car to other states and chill for some days with my babe, I just wnat to enjoy the little life I have. I dont care if the person is any tribe, even if the person is non Nigerian, I dont care.
I am only worried if someone is leading but tribalistic, waste our natural resources and money, tax me while providing nothing, failed in every index of any governance.
Failed in electricity
failed in healthcare
failed in security
failed in economy
has no exit plan
failed in water
failed in primary and secondary education
High corruption still intact.
This current adminstration failed in all of these. I am scared of traveling.
Politicians are still heavily paid while I am expected to suffer, why? The suffering should be both ways. It makes no sense that they enjoy while I suffer and I am the one working, they dont work. They jst sit down and do meetings. I work, I work but their polices have pushed me into suffering.
So, is this okay now? Pls, remove the tribal comments.
I rate candidates on their policies about allowing citiznes to protest, civil disobeience is part of democracy and strong one at that.
Their policy on cutting cost of running Nigeria (we waste a lot of money on this).
Their policy on education. Omo, if we can fix this, we have solved our problem by 20 percent. The high rate of uneducated Nigerians is a disaster.
Their policy on security. Tackle security, we will get back agriculture and economy can rebounce from shock.

Tinubu and his henchmen have studied Nigerians and are applying the basic things that keeps ordinary Nigerians away from polling units during election. One of the ways is by spreading the fears or feelings that "Election is already concluded before vote casting". It is pure lies.

This time around we will stay behind and defend the votes. INEC must count and record the votes and if they refuse they themselves will be counted.
During 2023 guber elections, APC thugs came to many polling units and scattered the elections, especially those PUs Tinubu lost in Eti-Osa LGA.

During the presidential election, they couldn't do anything because soldiers were deployed everywhere. During the guber election, there were only unarmed policemen who stood and did nothing as they ruined everything

Extremely difficult is an understatement, it's impossible.
If a shady character with no classmates, childhood friends or childhood photos, a man who graduated from school before the school existed, if such a character could become Nigeria President, then there is no way you can remove him.
I repeat no way.

I just laugh at Obi and Kwankwaso, they have done exactly what Tinubu wanted by exiting the coalition.
Now INEC will give them the highest number of votes but only Tinubu will have 25% in 24 states and he will be sworn in.
