NEW BURIAL LAW IN ANAMBRA STATE

The Anambra State government through the state House of Assembly has denied claims that it has introduced new legislation regulating funeral rites.

There have been reports circulating on social media that the state has outlawed lavish burial parties and banned the presentation of items such as cows, goats, and other expensive gifts during condolence visits.

However, in a press statement issued on Monday, the Special Adviser to the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Franklin Osankwa, said the state House of Assembly did not pass any new burial law.

Osankwa insisted that no such bill was introduced, debated or passed by the current Assembly.

The statement read, “The attention of the Anambra State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Somtochukwu Udeze, has been drawn to a misleading publication making the rounds, claiming that Anambra State has introduced a ‘new burial law’ banning the presentation of cows, goats and other condolence gifts.

“For the record, this publication is false, misleading and a gross misrepresentation of facts.

“The eighth Anambra State House of Assembly did not pass any new burial law. No such bill was introduced, debated or passed by the current Assembly.

The existing burial regulatory framework being mischievously referenced by some media platforms was enacted into law in 2019, long before the inauguration of the present eighth Assembly.

“Since the inauguration of the current House, no amendment whatsoever has been made concerning the areas sensationally reported in the media.

“It is therefore irresponsible and professionally unethical to attribute a non-existent ‘new law’ to the present Assembly simply to generate traffic, controversy and public outrage.

“At a time when distorted headlines are becoming a serious threat to public trust and social stability, media organisations must understand that journalism is a sacred responsibility, not a tool for clickbait sensationalism.”

According to him, the Anambra State House of Assembly remains committed to transparent, people-oriented legislation and will continue to engage citizens openly on every law legitimately before the House.

“We urge Ndi Anambra and the general public to disregard the false narrative and rely only on verified legislative information from official government channels,” the statement added.

All burial and funeral ceremonies are now restricted to Saturdays only. Midweek (Monday to Friday) burials are prohibited. All burial ceremonies must be completed within one day.”
What if the deceased is a Muslim and he/she dies on a Tuesday Morning?

No person shall give to the deceased person’s family, as a condolence gift, any item exceeding money, one jar of palm wine, one carton of beer and one crate of soft drinks
This makes no sense. You can't put a cap on anyone's graciousness. It is a violation of their rights.

Peter Obi has criticized the present govt for spending heavily on SUVs for lawmakers, and a lot of people have cvrsed out Wike for building houses for the judiciary. But let's go back in time shall we?

The same Obi who called out the govt reportedly purchased over 400 SUVs for traditional rulers during his time as a governor, oh, and with state funds obviously. Obi also got over 110 vehicles for Local Govts. He also gave out over 21 Honda Accord cars to judges in and 58 vehicles to magistrates; And that's not all. Houses were equally built for judges that cost close to N250m at that time.

Now how do you criticize Wike for building houses for judges, then clap for Obi who did the same? That's hypocrisy at its peak.

Note that the cars also distributed to the judges were reportedly Toyota sedans and Nissan SUVs. Obi equally distributed over 31 Peugeot 406 cars to House of Assembly members.

In his time his government distributed Ford, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Peugeot. Now he's talking about supporting local production. OK.

Re: Anambra Denies Introducing New Burial Law by koxyz:
I think the time to put forward such laws has arrived, extravagant spending on burial rite should be curtailed.

There are many ways to immortalalize the deceased. Building of a library in the community in the name of the deceased is an example. The community and the user of the facility will be ever greatful.

Firstly this thread has nothing to do with Obi, but it seems Obi is living rent free in your head grin

Secondly, for the sake of argument, let us assume that you are right, so because he did wrong does that mean he should not call out someone who is making the same mistake? Or is it why Tinubu is worse than Buhari, rather than calling Buhari out, he kept mute knowing that he will do worse? grin

So in your small mind, we should not considered something wrong because we missed the opportunity to do so in the past? grin grin

I sincerely hope that in this your current state of mind, that there is no unformed mind that is in your charge tongue

If Nigeria remains as it is then any one who chooses to practice Islam and wants to be buried according to Islamic rites as guaranteed within the freedom of expression of our constitution can be buried in Anambra.

So the idea that burials must be restricted to Saturdays only then conflicts with the freedom of reasonable expression, what the state can do is limit the disturbance to public activas a consequence of a burial proceeding
