What Are Your Beliefs On Traditional Medicine? by odumchi: 6:10am On Jan 09, 2013 |
From my perspective, the role that traditional medicine plays in today's [African] society is still quite important and certainly relevant. In the eyes of some, the practice is seen as utter demonic foolery, whereas others see it as man's supernatural blessing. In the Igbo culture we have ogwu Igbo, meaning traditional medicine. Ogwu Igbo, is essentially a chemistry and its main practitioners were dibia (medicine men & herbalists). Traditionally, medicine men were simply men who had grown familiar with the environment and had learned how to use its abundant resources to treat and solve man's problems. Prior to the days of penicillin and antibiotics, medicine men were the only sources of medicinal healing, and thus they became highly regarded, valued, and powerful. In times of pandemics, traditional rulers would often send messengers to very distant towns in order to retrieve a particular renown medicine man, in the hope that he would be their salvation. In those days, medicine men were free to roam about, pleddling their arts. Nowadays, where are they? In my opinion, just like with all things traditional, misunderstanding has created a negative stigma for medicine men. It is commonly thought that medicine men: are evil, worship evil spirits, and prepare various ill-intended concoctions. The practice of traditional medicine is now shunned and looked down upon, destroying the very sinews that formed the hearts of our cultures' scientific beliefs. As this much-needed means of drug administration closes, more and more people (those who can afford it) are forced to depend on Nigeria's poor and unreliable healthcare system when cheap and reliable solutions to much of their simple ailments lie in their backyards. What do you think? I'd like to hear you guys' opinions. |

As a Native Doctor, I can tell you now that traditional medecine has its strong areas and weaknesses.. Our traditional Orthopedic hospitals are in a league of their own.. However, they have their limitations and is never a bad idea to try them with caution. Most traditional meds would work better if only they were backed by some scientific methods. EXAMPLE:: Lemon grass & lipton tea mixture cures malaria or even Dogwonyaro, but the problem is that they just look at your physical symptoms with no blood or urine test and assume malaria, that can be dangerous. Plus most traditional drugs can damage your liver as they almost always contain alcohol. |

I have reservations about it but we can't rule them out as ineffective. The main issue with it is just dosage and administration. |

Caution is the word..theres no dosage and most of the brews can impact negatively on the liver.. Poor regulation means charlatans can get in and wreck havoc on people. Even specially prepared pharmaceutical drugs are supposed to be stored under certain temperatures and conditions..not our trado medicine...they dont expire and are mostly packed and sold in dirty bottles picked from refuse dumps by untidy people in old scrap vans with their irritating megaphones under the blazing heat. |

Once we separate the Juju from the diagnosis, the crisis of misconception of African traditional medicine will be resolved and the native doctors can become more appreciated in modern medical practice. 2 Likes |

Kamsy10: ogwo nnu oria. meaning it cures everything. stomach problem, headache, fever, diabetes, cancer, sleepless night, etc You're the true son of ur fada. That is why I hate traditional medicine, it curse every every, if u request for only malaria medicine, they will give u combination 20 in 1, which contains a lot of diseases. I dislike the rubbish. The worst part of it is that every body is now a herbalist in Onitsha. The last one I drank nearly killed me, imagine what I bought with 5,000 Naira with their rubbish NAFDAC number. I vowed not to take traditional again. If not oyibo medicine leave am. According to my research, the reason why people petronize them is because it's cheap. I can still remember the time of our fore fathers, why traditional medicine is the best, but now am speechless. |

1. no dosage 2. one shot kills 10 ailments 3. not purified (am sure its a cause of many dead livers and kidney failures) 4. Not enof research done on it(side effects are unknown) 5. Most use alcohol as solvent 6. They dont even have a precise recipee. All said, i used to take antimalarial every single month(am not exergrating) at one point in my life. Then i was introduced to one of these drugs. i took it intermittently and unblievably i did not take antimalarial for over two years, till one particular brew (from the same source o) almost killed me. I fell back to my monthly fansidar, but now thank God for inscecide treated mosquito nets. A doctor later said that the stuff must contain raw quinnine...well i no no. |
