My Landlord Gave Me Quit Notice For Demanding For My Right by Mistermoon(op): 5:04am On May 20
Please, I need advice on what to do.
The community disconnected electricity supply to our compound because the landlord did not pay a community electrification due (money for transformer) that predates our tenancy and the landlord gave only me a quit notice with 30 days ultimatum because I was the only one brave enough to demand that he pays the due so that electricity can be restored to the house.

I want to take him up legally but I need guidance on how to go about it plus L do not personally know a lawyer.

Forget legal action jare. If ywant to stay in the house, just go and talk to him man to man.

That something is right, doesn't mean that the way we ask it is proper - you have said you "demanded", I hope you didn't use the same "attitude" that the word implied?

Anyways, while it's not right, landlords often see themselves as the Lord of the Land on which their house was built - this is a lesson, don't try to be a hero if you can't lead others to join you in doing compound thing.

If you even go to court, the landlord can say he gave you the quit notice because, having considered that the house not having light will be an inconvenience to you, he has decided to terminate your tenancy agreement so you can get a proper house that meets your demand.

Wisdom is always profitable to direct - Landlord wey hold beef with full street naim you think say intimidation by few tenants will faze? You guys could have asked for a general meeting with him and sweet talk him into paying the dues, even if it means contributing small small to assist.

Them nor dey scratch brokos the way e take itch.

You had no right to make such request of him. I take it that since this money was paid before your tenancy, you had zero contributions regarding that. A better approach would have been to approach him on the way forward and not ordering him around like your puppet.

It is not what you said, it is how you said it.

Go to the nearest Magistrate Court or Local Government. Speak to the officials there, they know how to handle matters like this.

Your brave fit land you for grave in some conditions, use your brain.

It's not everything dey use gra gra dey settle, especially when others are complying.

Just be smart, drop ego, go and beg him, pay the levy, live in peace, and then leave when you are ready to do so on your own without a quite notice.
Re: My Landlord Gave Me Quit Notice For Demanding For My Right by Urgent1Million: 6:43am On May 20
Good to court jare.
Don't let anyone bully you for demanding your right.
Get a good lawyer. Pay him well and win the case.
Then landlord will pay the money to the community, come back and still give you a quit notice that he wants to use the apartment for something important and urgent.
An you'll get tf out.

Look for somewhere else to rent if you can no longer cope. Be selective in your battles, because not all battles are worth your time, effort and other resources...

Easier said than done. You think getting a lawyer is "Mama thank you".

Why not use part of that money and time to hire a lawyer and pay the levy and leave peacefully with his Landlord and neighbours.

The said issue came up before you moved in, yet na you carry am for head

Do you know the reason he didn't pay? Do you know whether he's also protesting the fact that community have to contribute money for transformer rather than PHCN handling that and the disconnection is his punishment for standing on his right?

Do you know how many times he has contributed because "someone stole fuse" from the transformer and every landlord had to pay?

- Where the landlord even agrees to pay, he is expected to share the money among all the tenants in the house... Do you know whether he tried doing so and the tenants refused, so he also kwechiri?

If you were wise, you would have known the following:
- It's actually illegal for PHCN to ask communities to contribute money for transformer, seeing it is PHCN's property. It's just like MTN asking your street to contribute money for the FibreX poles they're currently installing

- Atimes, such money is shared between few people in the community and some PHCN officials...

Your landlord might have been privy to this hence his refusal to pay, but you carry your bean-shaped head, forming local VeryDarkMan to stand for your right...

Abeg, go and apologise to him with one bottle of Rubies or look for another house

When you are on rent in someones house learn to know that you are in no position to make demands

Build your own house and fix everything up for yourself, until then learn to be diplomatic with your landlord. Diplomacy goes a long way. This I know because I was once a tenant

You “demanded” that he pay his dues! This says it all — you have a nasty attitude. Guy, if your landlord wants you out of his house, then out you go. You can’t live in his house by force. If you choose that route, trust me, you’ll regret it. Perhaps when you realise that your landlord’s house is his territory and that he can make your stay there extremely difficult if he chooses to do so, then you will realise that no law can save you there, and you’ll learn to mind your business next time. Mr “Brave,” keep looking for a lawyer, okay? You go learn!

If you go to the court , you will likely spend money. The money you'd paid long ago and have your rest.

Education and know way too much has its advantages and disadvantages....

Approach to issues matters. You said you demanded for your right! How about simply asking what is proposed steps were concerning the disconnected light and were he might needed the helps of the tenants?

Sir
Your story is not very full.
No landlord can ask you to leave 30 days unless your current rent has expired and you are due for a renewal.
If your rent has not expired, then leave the day your rent expires.

However if the place is where u want to stay
U can reapproach him again tomhave an understanding of what the issue was all about.
Better still u can discuss with him that you guys (tenants) will contribute to make immediate payments and then he should deduct it from your rent.
U never can tell maybe he's not buoyant at that time you made the "demand".
If you have a good rapport with the community executive...U can proffer a solution for contribution with the remaining tenants with the landlord also in the know/attendance.

Going the legal route will cost u money(expensive) and time and a broken relationship.
