How Much Is A Good Salary In Present Day Nigeria? by Slizzords(op): 2:47pm On May 23
Good afternoon everyone, I know that nairaland is filled with a lot of reasonable and experienced people, am a young man and I need guidance please.

So am married with a 8 month old baby, and make about 1M naira monthly for the past 3years now , it's not been easy from a financial aspect because we live in lagos and I discover that as I write this, I don't have up to 3M naira to my name, I don't know how money disappears, please note that am not a lavish spender, I don't party or go clubbing.

Please how do I save more money, because God forbid something happens now I don't have any money to fall back on. No landed property or anything. Please I need help thanks.

How much does your wife make? How is your typical monthly expenditure like?

If 1 million is not enough for you, wife and just 1 child then you need to check inwards. You're your own problem.

How? You're living above your means. Don't tell me you're not a lavish person because an in-depth search would tell you, you're lying to yourself.

Where do you reside?
Where do you work?
What car do you drive?
Those are the major ways money disappear in Lagos.
Your proximity to work, the car you drive, your residence location.

Had to open a shop for her, with like 5.2m so that I can reduce expenses on myself. Just normal things, nothing out of the ordinary.

Assume you earn 500k monthly and live within that and compulsorily save and invest 500k monthly to secure your future.

If you are living in the rural areas, you can live a good life with less than the minimum wage of N70,000.

If 10,000 is enough for food, then the rest is more than enough to flex as a big boy in the small town.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, has clarified his controversial statement suggesting that N10,000 could feed a family for several days.

Fasua said he actually referred to “a person” and not a family.

He made the clarification in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, following criticism over a viral clip from his interaction with Kay’s Hikers Club in Abuja on May 5, 2026.

The presidential aide said the remark was made in the context of rural Nigeria and was immediately corrected during the session.

“My attention has been drawn to the viral two-second clip of my interaction with Kay’s Hikers Club held on May 5, 2026, at The Destination, Abuja, wherein I stated that N10,000 is enough to ‘feed a modest family for several days’.

“There is a need to clarify that I meant to say ‘person’, and not ‘family’, and we were speaking at that point in the context of rural Nigeria.

“I immediately clarified my statement right there and then and emphasised to the audience the need for serious personal financial management in the context of global hardships,” he said.

Fasua said the engagement with the group, made up mostly of young Nigerians, lasted over two hours and focused on the country’s economic reforms, taxation policies and opportunities within Nigeria despite prevailing economic challenges.

According to him, some participants were confrontational during the discussion, but he considered the outing necessary to encourage direct engagement between government officials and citizens.

“Still, I believe it was an important outing, such that should be encouraged between government appointees and citizens — especially Gen Zs,” he stated.

He added that discussions during the session touched on issues such as the challenges facing foreign retail chains and the growth of Nigerian-owned businesses.

“In fact, the first salvo of questions was around the issue of Shoprite’s challenges, when I promptly brought up the bustling alternatives like Ebeano, Sahad, JustRite, HyperCity, Bokku, Market Square and other Nigerian brands,” he said.

Fasua also criticised what he described as sensational reporting and selective use of clips on social media, saying comments made during lengthy discussions were often taken out of context.

“We live in a world where people judge by headlines. We also live in a world where the media cleverly maxes out their popularity with sensational headlines and where the selectivity of reportage can put people in awkward situations,” he said.

The presidential aide maintained that despite Nigeria’s challenges, young people should remain optimistic about the country rather than seeking opportunities abroad.

“I will continue to inform the youths of Nigeria that statistically, they are better off building their nation than running abroad to already developed nations where they are often faced with daunting challenges and hurdles,” Fasua added.

Do you have any debt you are servicing? Car repayments? The business you set up for your wife?

How much do you spend on accommodation monthly and how much is upkeep at home?

Do you have any projects you are servicing? Land or house acquisition? Post graduate degree?

Approximately how much goes to charity? Family n friends support? Tithes? Etc?

You should be saving more to the best of my knowledge.

You answer to the above can help narrow it down.

Barring and extreme life circumstances, you should be saving 2m+ annually

May be you are the type thet buys baby food 20k twice per week, unnecessary weekly shopping, use 50k to cook soup, use 150k for power units to enjoy 24/7 AC and other wastefulness at home. Sometimes, those who are clubbing or carrying women are even spending wisely than some men who don't

How can you be earning 1m naira per month and still be complaining with a family of 3. You better cut your expenses now before it too late for you.

You need financial discipline. Your take home is not ₦1M that is your revenue. Track your expenses to the last Naira. Pay yourself first, meaning invest minimum of ₦300k monthly. Create a realistic budget

What sort of meaningless questions are all these? Do you pay monthly accommodation in Nigeria? Or you just want to ask questions because others are asking?

I still don't believe this your story, you can't be earning up to 1m for the last three years with what you said that you are not the extravagant type and yet your saving is 3m, it is either your matter is spiritual or there is something you are not telling us, beside your child is 8 months old. It is either you are living an extravagant lifestyle but you sees it as a normal live.

I will advice you cut down your expenses and try to have a fixed amount you save monthly, you just have to discipline yourself in that area
