Yesterday honestly humbled me deeply.

I recently informed my students (SS2) that I’ll be stepping away from my role as their Physics teacher to focus more on pursuing my career in Civil Engineering since I recently gain employment in an engineering field. Even though I’ll still create time to teach them online once in a while, I never expected the kind of emotional reaction I received from them when I announced it to them yesterday and even today.

Some of them cried.
Some became unusually quiet.
Some kept asking me not to leave completely.

To make sure our connection and learning continue, I created a WhatsApp tutorial group for them where I’ll still teach and guide them from time to time. Since then, the messages pouring in from these students have honestly left me speechless.

Reading their messages made me realize something:
Sometimes, as teachers, we don’t truly know the impact we are making while doing the job every day.

You enter the classroom thinking you are just teaching Physics, solving calculations, explaining motion, electricity, and formulas…
Not knowing some students are watching you as a mentor, role model, motivator, or even a source of hope.

I even received a handwritten letter from one of them yesterday during our weekend lesson.
A handwritten letter.

I’ll post it later because it honestly touched me deeply.

For now, let me share some of the WhatsApp messages from the group that nearly got me emotional myself.

Teaching is truly one of the few professions where you can unknowingly leave permanent footprints in people’s lives.

Numbers of my student is about 70+ while 58 are in attendance yesterday, 38 of them have joined the group created last night (less than 20hrs ago)

I think you should create a Telegram group to mentor them on life and build a community around that

A very good suggestion. 🫡 I had a similar experience in 2014 when I quit teaching. The reaction of my students was very touching and emotional. But few months later, none of them get in touch again because everybody has moved on. Creating an online group would've helped to maintain the good relationships I used to have with them, ..and avenue to keep mentoring them too

Take a student evaluation survey of your work. Use Google forms or something similar, it will help you. Don't rely on screenshots which is informal. A survey result will help you for future gigs than screenshot for privacy reasons.

Not necessarily. Life is a journey and everyone has their own bus stop. Do not give unsolicited help, it's not usually appreciated. Although I just did here - unsolicited advice but those who will pick the message will read, those who won't, it will fly over their heads (show them the moon they will be looking at your fingers instead)

I experienced the same thing when I taught during my youth service. There was a man whose children I taught primary school subjects.

One who was very stubborn, Daniel, cried so hard when I broke the news that I was leaving because I had passed out of NYSC, and his two sisters kept consoling him.

Surprisingly, this boy was very stubborn and I flogged him almost every day.

All for traffic on education ads

Teaching is good, just that it can't pay your bills in this administration. So it's more like slavery. Most especially if you're teaching in a private school.

Most of the students I taught Chemistry during my service year in Jigawa still message me today to appreciate me for making them love the subject back then....

Even me myself was shocked when they started connecting me on Facebook to appreciate my time in their state, those girls really made me proud

You have done well OP give it time to know if you have truly impact them positively but kudos all the same

I remember vividly in my primary 5, when our so called wicked form teacher was leaving, we all cried even doh some of use were secretly happy 😁
