What people fail to understand about emotions is that feelings don’t always last. Sometimes, it’s just for a few hours or a day, which makes genuineness difficult to measure. That’s why people who make final judgments based on temporary emotions often regret it later. If you want to be truly honest with yourself, come back here in a few months and tell us how the participation in that WhatsApp group is going.

A very good suggestion. 🫡 I had a similar experience in 2014 when I quit teaching. The reaction of my students was very touching and emotional. But few months later, none of them get in touch again because everybody has moved on. Creating an online group would've helped to maintain the good relationships I used to have with them, ..and avenue to keep mentoring them too

The screenshot will start coming in
Which relationship are you maintaining please?

It's good as they honour you, focus on your next phase of life, don't let emotions drag you to the past.
Before you know it, school will be saying you want to manipulate their students or take them away.

Leave the relationship to once you cross each other or anyone that can take step further by choosing as mentor.

Not necessarily. Life is a journey and everyone has their own bus stop. Do not give unsolicited help, it's not usually appreciated. Although I just did here - unsolicited advice but those who will pick the message will read, those who won't, it will fly over their heads (show them the moon they will be looking at your fingers instead) cheesy

Since you lack comprehension, I am not talking about career, I am saying the guy should use his experience to give the younger ones a soft landing via mentorship. In 5 to 10 years time they should have transitioned into their career stage and there will be a great reward for him if he does that. I have some boys like that, my HOD at work told me to help him with his son when he noticed that I am good in that area, now out of that 5 boys , oldest being 21 all still in the university are into cyber security, won a Google Hackaton and have floated their company as I advised and have got their first client

This is NOT true. More than 20 years post secondary school, I will never forget the impact of my Further Mathematics Teacher. I still have the memory of my primary Six English Teacher. You may have a short memory, don't project same on everyone!

Well done OP. Continue to be Exceptional!

I have done lots of that and it's highly rewarding. Even though I am not teaching I am working on having a system to have 10,000 of them I will pour into between now and 2030 and for that purpose I even started an NGO

Yesterday honestly humbled me deeply.

I recently informed my students (SS2) that I’ll be stepping away from my role as their Physics teacher to focus more on pursuing my career in Civil Engineering since I recently gain employment in an engineering field. Even though I’ll still create time to teach them online once in a while, I never expected the kind of emotional reaction I received from them when I announced it to them yesterday and even today.

Some of them cried.
Some became unusually quiet.
Some kept asking me not to leave completely.

To make sure our connection and learning continue, I created a WhatsApp tutorial group for them where I’ll still teach and guide them from time to time. Since then, the messages pouring in from these students have honestly left me speechless.

Reading their messages made me realize something:
Sometimes, as teachers, we don’t truly know the impact we are making while doing the job every day.

You enter the classroom thinking you are just teaching Physics, solving calculations, explaining motion, electricity, and formulas…
Not knowing some students are watching you as a mentor, role model, motivator, or even a source of hope.

I even received a handwritten letter from one of them yesterday during our weekend lesson.
A handwritten letter.

I’ll post it later because it honestly touched me deeply.

For now, let me share some of the WhatsApp messages from the group that nearly got me emotional myself.

Congrats op. Same happened to me 14 yrs ago. Feeling wey no dey last. It's only a matter of time. Infact na you go dey remember them. A lot of kids these days don't remember shit again. Despite being young. That's why I'm more happy for you continuing your career as a civil engineer. Your own personal growth matters a lot. The kids will find their way.

He didn't mention anywhere that he is a Literacy or English teacher. You don't have to be a perfect English teacher to teach many subjects.

It's not as if they should remember him forever. But that moment of emotion is good and should be cherished by both the teacher and the pupils.

Come, stop this wicked character...

But you might be right. You could also be totally wrong.

Matters like these could develope into a great cause. Depends on how it's handled, who could tell?

No spoil the matter abeg.

As for me... I have always been emotionally detached. Just realized it as I grew older. Most of these reactions here happened when one fine corper was leaving back then. I no kukuma feel anything apart from always remembering her relationship with Ikenna instead of yours truly.

Still sef, daddy no feel am.

Yep. Only a few of them will actually continue to remember he existed. Lol

This is very normal especially those teachers or corpers who showed commitment.

I will excuse your rudeness on a public forum but if it flew over your head, I am telling you once again that everyone has roles and purposes. Your teacher is not necessarily your mentor just as a manager is not necessarily a good manager of people but the same person could be 100% technical and good at their job but a failure at managing people. Again, don't play a role you weren't asked for because they are transitioning to something new and they need to see new faces and new experiences. Your HOD made a request. That's different from giving unsolicited help. I figure that observation and critical thinking is highly lacking here so let me stop pointing you towards the moon. Maybe it's just a function of life exposure. Enjoy your time!

The teacher's role is primarily instructional, while the mentor's role is more holistic and long-term. The primary role of a teacher is to teach and impart knowledge, usually in a formal setting such as a classroom, while a mentor provides guidance and support, often in a more personal and long-term relationship.

You are the one missing it up, you could not calm down enough to see what I pointed to. First, the OP was just a part time teacher and I was advising him that it's possible to transition to be their mentor. Because you are misconstruing my point I am putting the details about mentor and teacher below

A teacher imparts specific knowledge, skills, and academic facts using a structured curriculum and grading system. A mentor, however, draws from personal experience to provide broader career guidance, wisdom, and holistic support designed to help you navigate your unique long-term personal or professional growth.

The question I am asking you is that , does the OP fall into the category of someone the younger one can draw personal experience from

Yes or No.

Also can he give them holistic support that will help them navigate long term personal professional growth.?

I'm a very emotional person, even though I don't show it. I don't give my students my number. If I want to leave, I leave quietly.
Re: I Never Knew My Students Loved Me This Much by Rocktation(f): 11:24pm On May 24
It is not correct that every student will move on and totally forget him...why are people saying this? I know I haven't forgotten my favorite teacher back then in primary school; Nana Ko Bediako. Matter of fact, if anyone has any information on his whereabouts, please send me a DM. He is Ghanaian and a totally awesome Maths teacher who taught me a principle that I applied to lots of school and even real time problems. What is the principle? -->If more, less devise. If less, more devise. Simple.
If I did not have to do something else right now, I would explain further, but you won't believe how many times I've used this principle to make my life easier. God bless him wherever he is.

I remember, the school i thought at my home state (Nkpor), before leaving for youth service....
The school has both primary (very organised) and secondary section (still growing). Because of lack of teachers, i practically thought the secondary section up to 60% of the subjects, just to make sure, they are busy, without knowing, i am being the best.
The most surprising part of it , is that, i left science class in my ss3 , because of fear of chemistry to write art subjects in my WAEC, which i finally got a degree in Economics in the university.
So when i was in the school before my call up, i was teaching them, CRS, Civic education, government, economics, in secondary section and was teaching the basic 5 and 6 mathematics. Six months to my departure, the lady handling Basic Tech, physics and mathematics left in the middle of term, the owner of the school refused to hire new teacher for the subject, saying it will be next term, one day i had empathy for the students, especially those in Jss3 and Ss3 preparing for WAEC, i told them to give me their physics and mathematics textbook and scheme of work, i took it home, studied it and came back tomorrow and entered class, the students started laughing me, when i wrote physics on the board, how can government teacher teach them physics, i told them to calm down and listen, the set induction i gave them for the topic i want to teach them, they will just hailing me, lol and behold, immediately after teaching them that day, many of them that had lost interest in physics calculations, picked interested immediately, and i equally taught them mathematics, they were astonished. Even the owner of the school is a principal in government secondary school and was a maths teacher too, saw me, when i was teaching them, mathematics, she was surprised.
To cut the story short, i was being paid 12k as salary then, that was 2011, and because of the included subject, the owner added extra 6k to my salary. I organised evening and weekend tutorial on physics, Basic Tech, maths for the exam class, lol and behold, this children were bringing their friends from another school for the lesson, and monthly, i made over 40k from the lesson and private tutoring. But it really drained me mentally, because i read ahead of time and practice before i enter class, but my savoir is that, i had a diploma in education, back then, so all the teaching steps are still in my head.

Finally, when i was about leaving for service, the owner gave me an offer, to stay back in my State, for my NYSC, but i told her , I need to go to another state and experience something new, that I don't want to have career in teaching.....
Immediately i left, this students started disturbing through their parents, the owner started begging me, then i was staying one week at Ilorin, where i am serving and two weeks at Anambra just to teach them, i was making a lot of money, but immediately after my service year, i gave the woman offer, that we should have partnership in the running of the school, that she will pay me 20% of the profit generated every term, she refused and told me that she will place me on 50k salary monthly....
I refuse and left finally, within the space of 1 year, they started losing students and the school eventually closed down.

Then to my surprise, i left the school 2013/2014, and i virtual lost contact with the students, then i lost my father in 2022, lol and behold, i got a WhatsApp message, that that particular set i thought in their WAEC, that they are coming to the burial, that they saw the advert on my Facebook, i casual prepared for them, lol and behold, this students came and most of them were now big boys and ladies, they gave me an envelope of 200k , with some of them , still gave me personal money, they told me , that i made them pursue careers in science and three of them are presently medical doctors, few engineers, many nurses.
But look at me that taught them, is still hustling in the street, though i am average oh.

One of the guy that did medicine and his father owns a hospital, gave me a free medical services up till now, in his father's hospital.

Teachers are really great.

I'm not even expecting any reward from them, but saying a good teacher will be erased from their memory is wrong.
There was a time I saw my further maths teacher after 18yrs. D way I was so excited and hugged him....... coz he's my best teacher back den
