Senior Pastor of House on the Rock, Paul Adefarasin, has triggered serious reactions online after making controversial comments about Nigeria’s economy and the declining value of the naira during a recent sermon.

Preaching a message titled *“Becoming Who God Says That You Can Be: The Sequel,”* the popular cleric painted a grim picture of the country’s economic condition while urging Nigerians to become agents of change.

But the statement currently shaking social media is this:

“Nigeria is dead, let’s not deceive ourselves.”

The pastor described the nation’s economy as “comatose,” arguing that inflation and the collapse in the value of the naira have drastically weakened the financial power of ordinary Nigerians.

Then came another statement that immediately went viral online:

“Once you are counting in naira, you are poor.”

According to Adefarasin, the comment reflects the harsh reality of how much the naira has lost value over the years.

To explain his point, the cleric compared Nigeria’s economy today to the early 1980s, recalling that his father once earned around ₦18,000 monthly — an amount he described as major wealth at the time.

He further argued that even ₦1 billion today no longer carries the same real value because of inflation and poor economic management over the years.

Despite the harsh assessment, Pastor Adefarasin encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope.

He urged citizens, especially Christians, to become “kingdom citizens” and contribute positively toward rebuilding the nation.

As expected, the sermon has now sparked heated arguments online.

Some Nigerians agreed completely with the pastor, saying he only spoke the painful truth about the economy and rising cost of living.

Others, however, criticised the remarks as too extreme and discouraging, especially coming from a religious leader.

Many are now asking:
