It is on social media I found out semo can taste sugary. Wetin una do am wey make am taste sugary? I have never made one that tasted sugary. But at first it was not firm enough.

The first semo I made for my in-laws as a newlywed was awful, it was too soft and tasted like I put a teaspoon of sugar in it. I never liked it so I never made it when I was cooking on my own. I didn't know one needed to cover the pot on low heat for some minutes to allow it cook properly and solidify. I turned off the heat once it solidified and it tasted more or less raw. I cringe whenever I think about it. Thank God for understanding in-laws .

Before I figured out how to make it, my semo used to be very soft and slightly sugary and I hated it so much then. Now that I've gotten it I still don't like it. It's one swallow I can do without eating for years

Why did you cook what you haven't testrun at home?😂 I can only imagine how you felt.

I didn't know semo can be sugary until I saw some TT comments. I come dey wonder if e get another type of semo. Yes, if you are not using the method of adding into boiling water, you need to cook on low heat before you start stirring.

[b]When I was serving in Lagos, my Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) provided accommodation for us, so we usually cooked our own meals. Most of my colleagues loved eating semo and would prepare it regularly. Seeing how much they enjoyed it, I decided one day that I should give it a try myself.

I went to the market and bought about 1kg of semo I can’t remember the exact quantity, but it was enough. After successfully cooking my soup, I felt confident and moved on to preparing the semo. That was where the trouble started!

I had no idea it would be so stressful. Between stirring continuously, trying to avoid lumps, and getting the consistency right, I was already exhausted before it was even ready. By the time I finally finished making it, all the stress had completely killed my appetite.

Instead of enjoying the meal I had worked so hard to prepare, I ended up giving the semo to one of my colleagues who actually liked it. I happily returned to my trusted garri, which I know how to prepare and enjoy without any drama.

Since that experience in 2020, I haven’t attempted to make semo again. As far as I’m concerned, that experiment was enough for a lifetime! That said, I don’t mind eating semo occasionally as long as someone else is the one doing all the hard work of preparing it. 😄[/b]

How to make semo.

1) Put some water on fire. This will depend on the quantity of the semo you are trying to make.

2) Mix a little powder of semo with normal water. Mix well.

3) When the water on fire is hot, Take out small water from the one on fire and keep aside. pour the mixed semo into the boiling water and start stirring, don't leave for a second. Stir until it's smooth and thick to a good extent.

4) Add semo powder to the one on fire and continue stirring. Don't leave for a second.

5) When you are satisfied with your semo thickness. Add the water you put aside and cover. Allow it cook for like 7 to 10 minutes. When it's well cooked. Start stirring again until it's smooth and your semo is ready.

It can be sugary, because it is not well cooked, it's carbohydrate, so it's breakdown is sugar component. But seriously it is the easiest food for me. I eat semo every day for the past 15 years. If you want to know how to prepare it well , I can teach you.

I remember my ITK roommate back in Uni that made semo like garri.
- Pour hot water from a kettle into a bowl, pour semo and turn.

We just had a big disagreement that almost devolved into a fight, so I was not in the mood to correct his normal mumuness, so I just let him do his thing.

For me semo is healthier than garri. Garri triggers my heartburn like mad.

Plus, from the comments here. Sounds like many people don't know how to make semo. My semo is always smooth and non-sugary.

Yes, that is why I told you that when next l am in Nigeria, If The Celestial Angels allow me,l will come and marry that lady from Imo State that I told you before, I will be cooking for her when I marry her , and I will force her to eat Swallow ooooooooooooooo mucheche Hahaha 😂
