By Matthew Atungwu

President Bola Tinubu has approved a 50% discount on all passenger train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC.

This is to cushion transportation costs for Nigerians during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The president said the discount will take effect from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, until Monday, June 1, 2026.

Passengers travelling on NRC routes across the country under the arrangement, will pay half of the existing approved fares within the six-day period.

God bless the president.

The President should also work on connecting the Ibadan railway line with Ilorin and the Warri-Itakpe line with the Abuja-Kaduna line

This is nothing compares to the removal of oil subsidy which benefits only the politicians— especially the governors. You have done nothing in this regard baba Tinubu.

So? When Obi and Atiku said they will remove fuel subsidy, were you expecting fuel to be N105?

The railways are not doing well. Abuja to Kaduna runs only two trips despite the high demand. Seasonal subsidies isn't a bad idea but longevity of the service should be paramount

Don't mind Tinubu. He should have subsidized the aforementioned like Senegal did two or three years ago. At least Senegal that even reduced taxes are still enjoying till now. Their economy is booming to the extent that IMF and World Bank are begging them to come and collect loans. Abi no be so?

That's share tokenism in my view. Travelers are in reality supposed to pay FULL fares under normal circumstances in order to keep NRC afloat and also to make profits. Period. Except if the trains have already been configured to run on CNG fuel like the NRC boss (the well-read former Lagos State Commissioner of Transportation) stated that they planned to do last year, then this reduced 50% fares would have made more sense to me.
