Not in Nigeria. The Nigerian president is kept in check only by his conscience - and massive public outcry/protests (which won't happen because the SE will stay out if it, SS and SW won't do it, and North don't do it!)
North been asleep for 8 years (Buhari) you think they cannot wake up now and resume their business as usual ?

That's enough to keep any southern president awake at night.

Tinubu returning or not returning in 2027 is not the point

Conducting free, fair and credible elections in 2027 is the point
your own definition of free and fair is only when d person u wants win

What is "their business as usual"? When has the North ever massively protested even a governor?

A Southern Christian defeated a Northern Muslim. A muslim-muslim ticket getting reelected will NOT be massively protested by North

Especially when who'd probably become president if Tinubu goes, is Obi

Possible but not probable

My friend you must not only control the apparatus of rigging but USE them! Where's Ambode today? Popularity has nothing to do with it. If someone writes election results, only thing you can do is take them to court. If they also control the courts, that's the only "popularity" they need. Hence dictators, despite being unpopular, routinely "receive" 98% of the votes. grin
Maybe you should look up what ‘popular’ means—if Ambode couldn’t win the primary, he’s not popular.

Really? Tbis is about the most cheeky statements I've seen lately.grin
If Obasa was not popular he wouldn't have been reinstated as speaker of Lagos

Exactly, they’ll come for him eventually but not while he’s this popular.

He was so totally unpopular the entire assembly voted him out despite knowing he was Tinubu's boy. That's how unpopular he was!

Really? How did Hope go from FOURTH place to governor? How popular was Tinubu in Rivers that he "won" by landslide? Systemic rigging is not concerned with popularity because powers that be write whatever they wish as the result
Don’t mind the fella! He’s subtly trying to ‘justify’ Tinubus’ ‘wins’ come 2027 with the argument that he couldn’t have rigged because you first have to be popular in an area before you can rig! Given what we now know of Tinubu and Wike, no discerning mind would buy that drivel! The phrase rigging with impunity goes straight over his head! shocked

Yet popular enough to be restored to the speakership position even by the GCFR. Think

Tinubu will return in 2027 because of the following reason:
1. Opposition parties are in disarray: Never in the history of Nigeria have we had these terrible opposition. When APC was opposition to Jonathan, they united under one umbrella and produced Buhari who threatened a bloody revolution if the election was to be rigged. What we have today as opposition are bunch of selfish and desperate old men who Tinubu will definitely retire from politics come 2027
2. The masses have not changed: Vote buying was heavily recorded in 2023 and from what we saw during party primaries, the masses are ever ready to sell their votes.
3. Tribalism and religious sentiments: From all indications even from the comments we see here on nairaland, people are solidly behind their tribesman even if bandits will kill all their villagers. Muslim clerics are all over the place preaching the need for a Sharia law and why they must support a president who will protect their blasphemy laws and not yield to pressure from Donald Trump.
4. Control of state apparatus: INEC chairman, IGP, CDS etc will all please who appointed them and do their biddings
The problem with Nigerian elections is that everyone votes on the principle of ;it is my tribe's turn to chiop'..be it tinubu, obi, or atiku supporters. Nothing like see the bigger picture.

And it is this mentailty that explains why Nigeria has been a mess since 1960.

THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT: You don't have to be popular to rig! Tinubu was all he needed to return despite being totally unpopular!
All u need are the powerful elements on your side - if the person who writes the results and the courts are in your pocket, you can "win" any election. Hope in Imo demonstrated that - compromised SC refused to examine his very poorly fudged duplicate results, and simply accepted the ridiculous totals as authentic. That's how he went from 4th place to governor!
