Why Sleep Paralysis Feels Like A Spiritual Attack — Expert by Racoon(op): 7:51pm On May 30
During an episode, he advised focusing on slow breathing and attempting small movements such as wiggling a finger or toe, rather than struggling against the paralysis.

Many Nigerians who wake up unable to move, speak or call for help often describe the experience as a spiritual attack, saying “something pressed me” or “a witch held me down.”

However, health experts say the frightening phenomenon, known as sleep paralysis, has a medical explanation rooted in the brain’s sleep cycle and is often linked to stress, sleep deprivation and irregular sleeping patterns.

“It is classified as a parasomnia, one of the sleep-related experiences recognised in the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 and the International Classification of Sleep Disorders,” he said.

He explained that the condition is closely tied to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the stage of sleep associated with vivid dreaming, which typically accounts for about 20 to 25 per cent of an adult’s sleep cycle.

During REM sleep, the brain activates a protective mechanism called REM atonia, which temporarily switches off voluntary muscles to prevent people from physically acting out their dreams.

Normally, this muscle “off-switch” ends immediately upon waking. However, in sleep paralysis, the transition between sleep and wakefulness becomes misaligned.

“The mind becomes awake and aware before the muscle switch has been turned back on,” Mr Nnatus said. As a result, the person is conscious, aware of their environment, but unable to move or speak. Breathing and eye movements remain unaffected, which is why people can still look around and breathe normally despite feeling completely “frozen”.

Episodes typically last from a few seconds to a couple of minutes and resolve on their own. A common but misunderstood experience. Although many people are reluctant to discuss it, sleep paralysis is relatively common.

Research suggests that a significant proportion of people experience at least one episode during their lifetime, particularly adolescents, university students and young adults who are exposed to high levels of stress, sleep deprivation or irregular sleeping schedules.

Because the experience is often sudden and frightening, it is frequently misunderstood and interpreted through cultural or spiritual beliefs.

Why It Feels Like A Spiritual Attack
Mr Nnatus said the experience is often interpreted as supernatural because several frightening sensations occur at the same time.

The first is the sudden loss of control, which triggers intense fear. Second is the persistence of dream-like activity in the brain, which produces vivid hallucinations. These may include sensing a presence in the room, seeing a figure, feeling pressure on the chest, or believing something is sitting on or holding the body down.

He added that the brain’s fear-processing centres remain highly active during REM sleep, which amplifies panic and makes the experience feel extremely real.

“The result feels absolutely real because, in a neurological sense, it is real to the person experiencing it. It is not imagination, and it is not a sign of madness,” he said.
Across cultures, similar experiences have been explained through spiritual beliefs.

In parts of Europe, it has been described as the “Old Hag” phenomenon. In some Middle Eastern traditions, it is linked to Jinn. In parts of China, it is associated with ghost oppression.

In south-west Nigeria, it is widely referred to as ogun oru, interpreted by many as nocturnal spiritual attack, while others describe it as a witch “pressing” the body during sleep.

Mr Nnatus said these interpretations reflect cultural frameworks, but the underlying process remains the same across populations. Stress, disrupted sleep and lifestyle factors. According to Mr Nnatus, the strongest trigger for sleep paralysis is disrupted sleep.

Common risk factors include sleep deprivation, irregular sleep schedules, late-night studying, shift work, and constantly changing sleep routines. He noted that stress and anxiety, particularly among students and young professionals, significantly increase vulnerability.

Other triggers include sleeping on the back, caffeine or alcohol close to bedtime, jet lag, and prolonged screen use at night, which delays sleep onset. Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder may also increase the likelihood of episodes.

In some cases, sleep paralysis occurs alongside narcolepsy, a neurological sleep disorder characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks. He added that research suggests a possible genetic component in some individuals.

When It Becomes A Concern
Mr Nnatus stressed that sleep paralysis is not physically dangerous. He, however, said repeated episodes can lead to significant distress, including fear of sleeping, anxiety and poor-quality rest.

He advised medical attention if episodes become frequent or are accompanied by excessive daytime sleepiness, or sudden uncontrollable sleep episodes during the day, symptoms that may suggest narcolepsy.
“That pattern is a core warning sign and should be properly evaluated,” he said.

Managing and reducing episodes
Mr Nnatus recommended maintaining consistent sleep and wake times, ensuring adequate sleep duration, and reducing stress levels. Limiting caffeine and alcohol intake in the evening, reducing screen exposure before bedtime, and improving sleep environment can also help.

According to sleep health guidance from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults require at least seven hours of sleep per night for optimal health. He also noted that sleeping on one’s side may reduce the likelihood of episodes in people who are prone to them.

Don't worry, when you have the experience first hand you'll know there's nothing like sleep paralysis. Science think everything can be explained on the basis of observation and theory. I've seen someone confess of how he was fun of pressing pple in their sleep and as someone that use to have the experience almost every night nobody can ever tell me I was experiencing sleep paralysis.
Re: Why Sleep Paralysis Feels Like A Spiritual Attack — Expert by judewrites: 11:07am On May 31
Sleep paralysis is definitely a spiritual experience that cannot be completely explained in any other way except spiritually.

In my past experiences, I could sense the presence of beings that sounded very frightening.

But trust modern man to try and redefine the experience scientifically.

Re: Why Sleep Paralysis Feels Like A Spiritual Attack — Expert by DomPerignon: 11:10am On May 31
I used to suffer a lot from sleep paralysis that it got to a point I was wary of going to bed.

In my case it occured more when I took a day time nap.

I found out the reason why I was suffering from it and it was down to severe lack of sleep, struggling to keep awake and a very very bad coffee addiction.

When you go to sleep, two things happen

1. Your body is exhausted and you drift into a state of rest.

2. But your subconsciousness is active for awhile until you attain REM.

3. Being ex military, we were always on alert and trained our body to fall asleep for 5 mins and no more. This always leaves the brain active and alert to threats and when on active deployment , we took rotation keeping guard and sleeping that lasted no more than 5 mins. For a young person this is doable in a high stress environment but switching it off when you are not in that stressed situation is difficult. To keep awake we drank barrels of coffee. How I wish we had meth back then it might have helped . Outside coffee, we had tobacco pills - good for promoting brain activity like meth.

4. Now from 3 above, I never really strained REM state of rest and hardly dreamt . But when I left that gig, I found it hard to sleep normally and at the very moment I am drifting into REM, by militarized brain tries to wake my body. It is at this moment I find myself being very awake but not able to control my body. A heavy weight feeling on my chest, inability to speak and a feeling of a malevolent entity breathing down on me while pressing hard over me.

5. I am in this state for what seems an eternity but it actually lasts no longer than 5mins.

6. When you fall asleep, your body shuts down voluntary actions but your brain never sleeps because it keeps running all those involuntary actions like breathing , digestion and most importantly brain repair. Dosing on high concentrations of coffee and tobacco supplements and adapting a sleeping regiment that prioritised body rest above brain rest in a high stresses environment was what saw me suffering for years this condition.

7. I know there are people who suffer from this condition who were not in my own situation and never abused caffeine like I did but it all boils down to stress and the struggle to just sleep naturally.

It's because IT IS a spiritual attack.
Every spiritual happenings in the physical MUST have a physical meaning, after being viewed with our physical senses, because it's happening in the physical. Dooh angryshocked

Don't let science bullshit you with all of its confusions.

I suffered from sleep paralysis when I tried playing with sound frequency. All those solfeggio and blah

The things I saw grin
The struggles... trust me, they're better imagined than being real.

I even documented my experience here on nairaland
https://www.nairaland.com/8590497/dangerous-experience-experimenting-spiritism-solfeggio

It happens around particular times at night. Someone called it "The Witching Hour"
https://www.nairaland.com/6406266/witching-hour

Some try astral projection in this time and later regret it https://www.nairaland.com/6347838/dangers-astral-traveling

I admonish everyone to try know the truth, because apart from the inspirational nature of truth to inspire our choice, as I've written about here on nairaland, knowing the law also makes us become good law breakers. Same way those footballers who are ruling the match start faking injuries during the end of the match, so as to count time grin

There are rules even above and below. You want to know how I know this? It's because there are Rule-rs even above and below. Don't let science and religion deceive you.

Even your "village people" know and make attempt to work within the rules, lest they suffer. if this wasn't so, everyone would be suffering attack from village people. You thought it was just prayers protecting you all these while? grin

Now I understand. I had it once at the same adolescent stage of my life and it hasn't repeated again.

So, one will experience it at least once in a lifetime and a stage, the adolescent.

If you experience it more often then you need to consider it abnormal as you maybe suffering from an ailment.

How do you explain this happening to someone consecutively for 3 weeks, every day, and it happens at the same time of the night ,12 AM. Whenever it happened, I would see my room door under a lock, yet someone like a ghost would enter often in the image of a known person, and the torment would start, sometimes from that moment till morning around 5 AM. Until one night which was going to be the last time I had the experience, I cried profusely because It felt like I was going to die that night cos I was tired. I confessed my sins, and read John 3:16 , and that was the last time I experienced this situation, till date. It is almost 20 something years ago now since I last experienced it. This was my personal experience.

Did you use to wet the bed?

I did . And sleeping was stressful because whenever I drift into deep sleep that's when I pee so I always used to fight drifting into deep sleep just so I don't wet the bed.

Trying to sleep when you are highly stressed or in a stressful state causes this for most people.

The brain is a very powerful and highly sophisticated organ that we don't understand how it works .

You were struggling to sleep in that environment and 12am was your normal biological clock rythmic time to shut down.

When you're strong in the spirit and you encounter such spiritual experience, from your sleep, you call on the name of Jesus, you'll feel victorious and be the one chasing those spirits. You wake up from your sleep with smile on your face and even wish the encounter continues.

hand movement at night (scratching) unconscious nail scratching on itchy part of the body is most likely the case.. shower before bed although some meds causes one to scratch itchy part of the body during sleep e.g Tramadol has that effect.

you go just wake up with marks overnight
that drug as pain killer is something eles

I dunno when I'll stop having sleeping paralysis. Shit is very scary honestly. Like the OP said, I just wiggle my toe and it stops slowly. It happens to me only when I sleep during the day time and with someone else in the house.

My question is what happens if someone wakes you up during the sleeping paralysis? I've never had such experience though
