Hello Nairalanders,

I am creating this thread to publicly call out the gross incompetence of GTBank (@gtbank) and First Bank (@FirstBankngr). I am currently completely stranded, out of cash, and cannot even afford transport fare because both banks are holding onto my money and playing games with my life.

On the 25th of May, 2026, I transferred ₦50,000 from my First Bank account to my GTBank account.

First Bank debited me instantly. After a week of crying out to both banks, First Bank customer care on X just sent me a DM confirming the transaction was successful on their end and gave me the official 30-digit NIBSS Session ID: 000016260525212658002065390897.

Here is where the wickedness from GTBank starts:
1. Over the weekend, a GTBank agent checked their deep server logs and confirmed to me on WhatsApp that they saw the transaction sitting on their server gate on a "BLANK STATUS."

2. Because they saw it, they created a formal inward dispute ticket for me with Reference ID: 260601353720618 and promised it would be credited.

3. Shockingly, this morning (Tuesday, June 2nd), another GTBank agent named Eberechi Chukwueke sent me an email (CRM:033400000396) completely contradicting the bank, claiming they have "no evidence" of the transaction and told me to go back to First Bank!

How can a bank issue a tracking reference ID for a stuck transaction on Monday, and then turn around on Tuesday to say "no evidence"?

If GTBank's server gate rejected the "blank status" transaction, it means the ₦50,000 has automatically reversed back into First Bank’s internal suspense ledger, and First Bank is lazily sitting on my money without crediting my app dashboard!

I am stuck at home, starving, and stranded. Both banks need to stop passing the buck. One of you is sitting on my ₦50,000.

Please help me tag @gtbank and @FirstBankngr handles on social media. Moderators, please move this to the Front Page to save an innocent customer from this institutional nightmare!

Go back to FBN let them reconfirm the status of the transaction, GTB has little to do about it. They can even recall the transaction since it hasn't hit your account in GTB. Go with your GTB bank statements from a day before the transaction till date. In that case FBN will have no excuse but to follow up for the reconciliation, your money is definitely sitting in one of their suspense GL accounts

If you go to Firstbank with any complaint you will fill form then wait for a very long time for your turn then they will ask you to come back the following week. This is if you are very lucky their network is good.

Write to CBN and copy the banks, they will resolve it sharply.

Or better still, threaten to report them to CBN first.

Once CBN gets involved, they'll resolve it sharply, because there's usually a fine attached if I'm right.

You can check CBN website for the mail to report to.

It's not the fault of either banks. Nigeria banks are very fast in inter-bank transactions. NIBSS experienced network downtime and it affected interbank transfers. Reach out to the issuing bank for resolution.

Many successful transactions were reversed on that date. He should reach out to the originating bank.

You clearly don't know how inter-bank transactions work. FBN is not the one initiating the reversal. There was a glitch at the settlement system. They are responsible for most reversals and not the banks.

I ve been using FBN for decades. I am not new to glitch.

Whenever money got reversed, you ll see it in your statement or mobile bank history...they are so efficient like that

Few yrs ago, they had 24hrs glitch n everything was rectified the following day with reversed notification / emails etc

The glitch was not caused by FBN. Billions were trapped. FBN can confirm if the transaction was successful or not by checking their automated reconciliation or acknowledgement from the receiving bank. Most of the glitches are not from the banks. This was from the settlement system and it messes things up.

The bank that debited you is responsible for tracing your funds. Call/visit the bank and ask them to trace your transfer using the session ID.
They'll update you on the status of the transaction.

If you understand how inter-bank transfers work you won't be typing FBN being efficient and reversals. I can teach you the workflow if you're willing to learn and then you'll realize what you typed doesn't make sense.

Opay and Palmpay will not even try this shii but trust the usual brick and mortar bank in Nigeria to always drag their already battered image in the mud, ordinarily, both banks don't even need to involve the customer going back and forth before this would be resolved but trust me, Nigeria will always be Nigeria, anyhowness is a big thing here.
