Tinubu Has Deployed Full-Scale Rescue Operation For Kidnapped Schoolchildren by SlavaUkraini(op): 8:14am On Jun 05
Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation, says President Bola Tinubu has ordered a full-scale rescue operation for the abducted Ogbomoso and Borno schoolchildren.

Idris spoke in Abuja on Thursday during a press conference on national security tagged #UniteAgainstTerror.

The minister’s comments come amid growing public concern over the rising wave of attacks on schools across the country, which has triggered protests in several locations, including the nation’s capital, since Monday.

On May 15, gunmen abducted about 39 students and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire LGA of Oyo state.

Two people were killed during the attack on one of the schools, while Michael Oyedokun, one of the abducted teachers, was later killed in captivity.

In a separate incident in mid-May, about 42 children were reportedly abducted from a school in Askira-Uba LGA of Borno state.

Addressing the incidents, Idris said the abductions are not merely attacks on communities and families but assaults on the future of the country, education and the values that bind citizens together.

He, however, on behalf of the president, assured that “the safe return of every child and every teacher currently in captivity remains a top national priority”.

“The president has made it clear that no child belongs in captivity and that no effort will be spared in ensuring that those responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to justice,” the minister added.

“He has directed that every lawful instrument available to the Nigerian state be deployed towards achieving this objective, including the deployment of a specialised rescue team.”

The minister said the president has also authorised the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to strengthen security presence across vulnerable communities and forests.

He noted that the Borno attack bears the familiar signature of terrorist groups that have for years sought to undermine education and destabilise communities in the north-east.

“While operational details cannot be disclosed for security reasons, I can assure Nigerians that multiple security and intelligence agencies are working in close coordination,” he said.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, the National Intelligence Agency, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the National Counter Terrorism Centre are actively involved in ongoing efforts.

“Intelligence gathering, aerial surveillance, community engagement, and search-and-rescue operations are continuing without interruption.”

‘WE SHALL OVERCOME THIS CHALLENGE’

Idris said the Tinubu administration’s response goes beyond the deployment of force, noting that it is anchored on a comprehensive, intelligence-led approach to national security, alongside an overhaul of the country’s security architecture.

According to him, one of the key pillars of the reforms is the implementation of state policing, which he said the president is determined to leave as part of his legacy.

“President Tinubu is determined to ensure that one of his legacies is the delivery of a restructured policing system that is dynamic, flexible, and fit-for-purpose — one that truly empowers and secures local communities,” he said.

The minister said the administration inherited complex security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and oil theft, but has adopted a strategy that combines military pressure, intelligence coordination, technology, regional cooperation and socio-economic interventions.

He claimed that since May 2023, hundreds of terrorists and criminal elements have been neutralised, arrested or forced to surrender, while numerous kidnapping victims have been rescued across the country.

Idris also linked lasting security to economic development, saying the government is pursuing reforms aimed at promoting inclusive growth and shared prosperity.

“There is a fundamental point to be made: that the enduring solution to Nigeria’s security challenges lies in shared and inclusive economic growth and shared prosperity,” he said.

“This is why President Tinubu is championing the most ambitious, forward-looking, and productive economic reforms in our nation’s history.”

‘TERRORISM HAS NO TRIBE’

The minister also urged Nigerians to support security agencies and reject divisive narratives, stressing that terrorism has no ethnic, religious or political identity.

“Whether in Oyo, Borno, Zamfara, Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, the South-East, or any other part of Nigeria, an attack against one Nigerian is an attack against all Nigerians,” he said.

“Terrorism has no tribe. Terrorism has no religion. Terrorism has no political affiliation. Its only purpose is destruction.”

Idris called on media organisations to exercise restraint and professionalism in reporting security issues, warning that sensational coverage could inadvertently advance the objectives of terrorist groups.

“To the families whose children and loved ones remain in captivity, I convey the assurances of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

“Your pain is our pain. Your government – our government – has not forgotten you.

“Every available resource is being deployed. Every security agency remains engaged. Every intelligence lead is being pursued.”

Idris expressed confidence that the country would overcome the current security challenges.

“Nigeria has faced difficult moments before and emerged stronger. We shall overcome this challenge as well,” he said.

“We shall defeat terrorism. We shall protect our schools. We shall safeguard our children. And we shall continue to build a nation where every Nigerian can live, learn, work, and prosper in peace.”

These guys are full of sh*t. This should have been what a responsible and responsive government should have done from day one of this unfortunate situation. I pray they bring our children and their teachers safely back home. Meanwhile, it's doesn't shield anything away from the monumental failure of this administration. The country has never had it so bad, and sincerely Tinubu has left little to be desired.

What does he mean by "full scale"? Surrounding the terrorists and begging them to release their captives?

They don't believe it. They expect him to go and snap photos in ogbomoso wearing military khaki and put his hand on his chin like clueless GEJ.
One thing this current wave of insecurity has shown is that opposition know there's no pathway to the presidency for them. That's why they've been wailing desperately for the president to resign.

They'd all be caught, na time.

Attack them, if some of the victims die, it is better to attack the terrorists rather than paying them money to buy bigger guns, create more network and take over the state.

If Tinubu was half of what Goodluck is, he would be given life president.

Tinubu recalibrated the metrics of failure, we were thinking Buhari was the lowest we can go, but Tinubu is digging so deep, we will soon hit crude oil

Then we thought we had hit the very rock bottom with that clueless man from across the desert... Never knew his tenure would be paradise compared to his successor.

My candid opinion for PBAT is not to think he is invincible.

Northerners in majority don't like him and it's better he knows now.

Again does PBAT remember the meaning of Karma ?

It's called do onto me what you want me to do to you.

This shud have been done that day.
Rather than attributing this to d opposition sponsoring this attacks.
If they r, they shud be dealt with by d Govt in power.
There r boundaries to opposing s govt and killings innocent citizens to prove the govt is a failure is just terrible

Meanwhile I'm still in shock that a man rigged his own primary even as consensus candidate - everyone knows d man who contested against him was just a shadow head, so y rig an election against urself.
It proves that rigging is inbuilt and endermic in oga

Storyland! Nigerians need to arm themselves and realize that the APC is being intentional in all it continues to do. Islamization of Nigeria is their goal. Expect more kidnappings and brutal massacres to come. Arm yourselves and protect your communities and lives. undecided

Let the enactment of state police be expedited and I think it is scaling public reading in the National Assembly.

It is evident the current security infrastructure can’t tackle the hydra headed monster of insecurity in the country

What Practical Steps Should Southwest States Take Against Banditry and Terrorism?

Please, make your suggestion also on that thread. An authorised person may be reading this too and your contributions will be of help

For me

1. Establish a Comprehensive Resident Identity System

The Each State Government should develop a comprehensive resident identity and address verification system to improve security, planning, and service delivery. Every resident should be encouraged to register through a centralized database linked to verified residential addresses. This system will assist law enforcement agencies in identifying criminal elements, tracking suspicious activities, and improving emergency response capabilities while respecting constitutional rights and privacy protections.

2. Registration and Regulation of Herders

All herders operating within Each State should be required to register with the State Government and the relevant Local Government Authorities before engaging in grazing or livestock activities. Registration should include biometric identification, location of operation, livestock records, and compliance with state regulations. This measure will promote accountability, reduce farmer-herder conflicts, and help security agencies identify unauthorized or suspicious activities.

3. Monitoring and Prevention of Violent Extremism

The government should strengthen collaboration between security agencies, community leaders, and religious organizations to identify and prevent violent extremism. Authorities should monitor and investigate individuals or organizations suspected of supporting terrorism, radicalization, or violent activities, regardless of religious affiliation. Any person found to be promoting or financing terrorism should face prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.

4. Promote Agricultural Self-Sufficiency

Each Southwest State should invest heavily in agriculture to enhance food security and create employment opportunities. Government support should include access to improved seedlings, mechanized farming, irrigation systems, agricultural training, storage facilities, and access to markets. Increased agricultural productivity will reduce economic vulnerabilities and strengthen rural communities.

5. Develop a Community and Neighbourhood Intelligence Network

A structured neighbourhood intelligence network should be established across communities in each state State. Residents, community leaders, traditional institutions, and security agencies should work together to identify emerging security threats and share relevant information. Such a system should operate within legal frameworks and emphasize the protection of citizens' rights.

6. Eliminate Illegal Settlements in Deep Forest Areas

The government should conduct a comprehensive survey of forest reserves and remote settlements. Unauthorized settlements established in deep forests, particularly those linked to criminal activities, should be dismantled through lawful procedures. Forest reserves should be regularly monitored and patrolled to prevent their use as safe havens for kidnappers, bandits, terrorists, and other criminal groups.

7. Swift Prosecution of Serious Crimes

The State Government should strengthen collaboration with the judiciary and security agencies to ensure the swift investigation and prosecution of kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, illegal arms trafficking, and organized crime. Fast-track procedures should be considered for cases involving serious threats to public safety while ensuring due process and fair trials.

8. Establish Formal Reporting Channels for Suspicious Activities

Multiple reporting channels should be created to enable citizens to report suspicious activities safely and confidentially. These channels may include dedicated hotlines, mobile applications, community liaison officers, and local security committees. Public awareness campaigns should educate citizens on how and when to report security concerns.

9. Promote Civic Education and Constitutional Values

Schools across each State should strengthen civic education programs that teach constitutional rights, responsibilities of citizenship, peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law. Young people should be equipped with the knowledge and values necessary to contribute positively to society and resist extremist influences.

10. Prosecute Incitement to Violence

The government should adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward incitement to violence, hatred, terrorism, or public disorder. Individuals who promote violence through public speeches, religious gatherings, traditional institutions, political platforms, social media, or any other means should be investigated and prosecuted according to the law, regardless of their status or background.

11. Expand Vocational and Technical Education

Each State should significantly expand vocational and technical education opportunities to equip young people with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship. Training programs should focus on modern agriculture, information technology, construction, renewable energy, manufacturing, and other high-demand sectors. Empowering youth economically will reduce vulnerability to recruitment by criminal organizations and extremist groups.
