Your Lab Result Is Abnormal. Does That Mean You Are Sick? by Dpharmacist(op): 10:23am On Jun 06
One of the most common mistakes people make after receiving a laboratory report is assuming that any value marked as "high" or "low" automatically means they have a disease. The moment they see a result outside the reference range, panic sets in. Some begin searching Google. Others start imagining the worst possible diagnosis. A few even begin taking medications or herbal products without consulting a healthcare professional.

But here is a question worth thinking about:

If your laboratory result is abnormal, does that automatically mean you are sick?

Not necessarily and this answer may surprise many people.

One of the most important lessons taught in medicine, pharmacy, laboratory science, and other health professions is that laboratory tests are tools for decision making, not diagnoses in themselves. An abnormal result is simply a clue. It is one piece of information that must be interpreted alongside the patient's symptoms, medical history, medications, lifestyle, physical examination findings, and other investigations.

In fact, if we gathered one hundred apparently healthy people today and performed enough laboratory tests on all of them, some would still have values that fall outside the reference range despite being completely healthy. This happens because laboratory reference ranges are derived from statistical averages within populations and not always absolute definitions of health and disease.

Consider two different scenarios.

A healthy twenty five year old man who spends most of his week lifting weights undergoes a routine medical examination. His creatinine level comes slightly elevated. He becomes worried because he might have heard that creatinine is related to kidney function. He might check ChatGPT about elevated creatinine and be seeing kidney disease and dialysis. Yet his kidneys are functioning normal. His increased muscle mass partly explains the result.

Now consider another individual whose blood test results all appear to be within normal limits. However, he has been losing weight, urinating frequently, waking several times each night to drink water, and feeling persistently tired. His laboratory report may appear reassuring at first glance, but his symptoms tell a different story.

Which patient should concern us more?

Most experienced clinicians would focus more attention on the second patient.

This is exactly why healthcare professionals spend years learning not only how to read laboratory reports but also how to interpret them correctly. The real skill is not simply recognizing whether a number is high or low. The real skill lies in understanding what that number means for a particular individual sitting in front of you.

Think of a laboratory result as a witness in a courtroom.

A witness may provide important information, but no competent judge would deliver a final verdict based on the testimony of a single witness alone. Evidence must be examined from multiple angles before a conclusion is reached.

The same principle applies in healthcare.

Aside creatinine, the same can be said for liver enzymes, cholesterol levels, blood sugar measurements, white blood cell counts, and many other laboratory parameters. Without proper interpretation, numbers can be misleading.

This is one of the reasons healthcare professionals remain indispensable despite advances in technology, artificial intelligence, and automated laboratory systems. Machines can generate results. Software can flag abnormal values. Search engines can display thousands of possible diagnoses. However, none of these can fully replace the clinical judgment required to interpret results within the context of a real human being.

Good healthcare professionals do not simply ask, "What does this laboratory report say?"

They ask, "What is this laboratory report trying to tell me about this patient?"

There is a huge difference between those two questions. The first focuses on numbers while the second focuses on people.

Medicine has never been about treating numbers. It has always been about understanding human beings. Laboratory tests remain some of the most powerful tools available in modern healthcare, but their true value emerges only when they are interpreted correctly by trained professionals who can connect the science with the story behind the patient.

So the next time you receive a laboratory report with a value highlighted in red, resist the urge to jump to conclusions. An abnormal result does not automatically mean disease, just as a normal result does not automatically guarantee perfect health.
The most important question is not whether the number is high or low. The most important question is what that number actually means in the context of the person carrying it.

Medical check up without being sick is another form of causing unnecessary panic attack

How do you think the doctors won't find one or two ailments as you are aging

That's why I always advise people to take good care of their health and body. Body wey dey do the hustle deserves some rest

God bless you. This piece is timely.

I’ve been feeling like 9/10 healthy but my last lab results keep showing something outside range. The same value for the last 3years. AI and self analysis wants to put me in panic. Anyways, I’m meeting a physician this week for interpretation.

Didn’t use to take my health seriously before now; but since I started making small money, getting more assets, any slight discomfort I’m off to the hospital.

May next of kin not eat the fruits of our labor until we are old and ready to exit. Lol

It's always advisable to try out two lab centers to check and balance the results, don't depend only on one lab result.

OP you are wrong
Laboratory results always show you're sick even when you're not showing any symptoms.
Every adult from 50yrs and above should be doing lab work up every 6months
Take for instance, Chike is 55yrs and engages in regular workout and one day he undergoes a lab work up which shows his hemoglobin is 9, HbA1C, triglycerides 250, LDL 150 and HDL 40. and all vital signs are normal.
Chike appears normal with no signs or symptoms of any disease.
Is Chike sick or not?
One day Chike was walking around his compound and fainted and he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Yes
This is very correct.

Laboratory result is only one part of the full health picture. An abnormal test value does not automatically mean a person is sick. Factors such as stress, diet, exercise, medications, dehydration, timing of the test, or even normal biological variation can affect results.
Laboratory findings should always be interpreted together with symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and sometimes repeat testing.
That is why doctors do not treat numbers alone, they treat patients. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for proper interpretation of any lab result.

Oga regular checkup the older one gets saves lives, illements such as cancer could be treated if dictected early. Late Capt Hosa okumbo would have been alive today if the cancer he had was seen on time, same with Gani. A late prof of urology, even the head of the association found out he had prostrate cancer when it was already late and was given few months to live, he died within the time frame. After his death it was recommended that once age 40 and above Nigerians must do proatate test minimum 1ce yearly. I assume you are over 40, when last did you do a PSA test?

That's why people die unnecessarily because they are waiting to be sick before going for medical checkup. There are some ailments that are better caught at the early stage. One's eGFR may be below 60 and they won't know. Cancer is best managed when still in stage 1 or 2. High cholesterol doesn't come with symptoms. Hypertension is a thing. There are too many examples to ignore.

Endeavour to go for a medical checkup once in a year.

Do check up as much as you can. Some ailments don't give signs till when it's irresponsible. Chronic hepatitis for example, the liver can be damage without showing signs

I guess the op na pharmacist from the monika. Testing is a great tool to staying healthy. If waited for symptoms, most times it is already too late. At least get baseline of the critical health values as one age that way one knows how one's health progresses. Better catch the disease early than when it is already too late.

No single general lab results are abnormal or normal, they are usually broken down into different segments, your doctor should be able to explain details of the results.

Cholesterol-Normal or high
PSA-Normal or high
And many more

Hes not wrong and you're not wrong. Lemme explain
His explanation is correct.
About your example,if Chike presents to me symptomless with above results,I'll check his vitals. If blood pressure is high and he's obese, then he has metabolic syndrome, irrespective of his symptomless state. I'll send for further tests, to check for Fasting Blood Glucose. If that is high,he had type 2 diabetes and would be on oral hypoglycemics, EVEN IF HE'S SYMPTOMLESS. I'll also send for kidney function tests especially Creatinine,eGFR and ACR. If there's a derangement,I might add a GLP2 like empaglifozin. Etc etc
So TLDR each scenario is different and taken on its own merit
