The cost of cooking gas, also known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), has risen sharply across parts of Nigeria, with some retailers now selling the product for as much as ₦2,400 per kilogram.

The latest increase has sparked concerns among households and small business owners who depend on cooking gas for daily activities. Consumers in several cities have reported paying significantly higher prices compared to what was obtainable earlier in the year.

Market observations indicate that while some major gas plants continue to sell between ₦1,650 and ₦1,900 per kilogram, prices at certain retail outlets have climbed above ₦2,000, with some locations recording rates as high as ₦2,400 per kilogram.

The development means that refilling a standard 12.5kg gas cylinder could now cost between ₦25,000 and ₦30,000, depending on the location and outlet.

Industry operators attribute the increase to a combination of factors, including rising depot prices, transportation costs, foreign exchange fluctuations, and supply chain challenges affecting the domestic LPG market.

Many consumers have expressed concern over the continued increase in the cost of essential commodities, noting that the rising price of cooking gas is placing additional pressure on household budgets already strained by inflation.

Some families have reportedly begun reducing their gas consumption, while others are considering alternative cooking fuels due to affordability concerns.

Energy stakeholders have called for measures to stabilize the LPG market and improve local supply in order to make clean cooking energy more accessible to Nigerians.

As the cost of living continues to rise, many households are hoping for interventions that could help ease the burden of escalating energy expenses.
