Matthew Akinwale Dada, an equipment maintenance technician based in Rivers State, has narrated to FIJ how First Bank of Nigeria and Access Bank have continued to withhold the N500,000 he mistakenly transferred into the First Bank account of his late father-in-law on December 22, 2025. Speaking with FIJ on Monday, Dada said the money was meant to be sent to his wife, Jemialu Oluwatoyin Janet, for safekeeping ahead of his son’s school fee payment in January. However, he mistakenly transferred the funds to his late father-in-law’s account because both his wife and her father banked with First Bank. He explained that the transfer was made from his Access Bank account, and every effort to recover the money since the incident occurred has failed, despite repeated complaints to both banks and the submission of a court order. “I wanted to transfer N500,000 to my wife on December 22, 2025, so she could keep it for my son’s school fees against January, but unfortunately, I mistakenly transferred it to my late father-in-law’s account instead,” Dada told FIJ. My wife also contacted First Bank customer care, and both banks confirmed that the transaction was successful.” REPEATED COMPLAINTS YIELDED NO RESULT Despite promptly reporting the erroneous transfer, Dada said both banks repeatedly assured him that the issue would be resolved within 24 hours, but months later, the money remains unreversed. “I called both First Bank and Access Bank several times and sent emails almost every week,” he said. “They both responded and kept promising that the issue would be resolved within 24 hours, but nothing positive has happened till this moment.” COURT ORDER SUBMITTED, YET NO REVERSAL Dada also told FIJ that after several complaints, the banks requested a court order before processing the reversal of the funds. He said he complied with the directive by submitting the required documents to both banks in February, but the money has still not been refunded. “At some point, both banks asked for a court order before they could activate the reversal process,” he said. He said the bank claimed the verification request came from First Bank. “On March 3, Access Bank replied to one of my emails concerning the erroneous transfer,” Dada said. “They asked me to give consent for the deduction of N8,068 from my Access Bank account to verify the authenticity of the court order I submitted to First Bank, claiming that First Bank requested it. “I gave them written permission to conduct the verification, although I do not know whether the money has been deducted from my account. They, however, acknowledged receipt of my consent.” READ ALSO: Enugu Resident Loses N874,500 After Zenith Bank ATM Held His Car When FIJ contacted First Bank via email on Wednesday to ask about the delay in reversing Dada’s funds, the bank responded and promised to look into the matter if Dada resent the court order in PDF format. “We acknowledge your email regarding the unresolved erroneous transaction. Kindly be informed that we are unable to access the documents provided,” the bank responded. “We therefore advise that Dada resend the court order in PDF format for further assistance.” FIJ also contacted Access Bank via WhatsApp on the same day, but the bank did not respond. Subsequently, FIJ sent an email to the bank for comments on the matter. “This is to acknowledge your mail. Our representative will share an update with you on the matter within 24-72 hours,” Access Bank replied. No other response had been received at press time. https://fij.ng/article/technician-mistakenly-sent-n500000-to-late-father-in-laws-first-bank-account-6-months-later-no-reversal-despite-court-order/

Old school bank behaving like a grandma that is stubborn...... Could be very frustrating if you refuse to upgrade your banking system to a fast and more secure tracking system to allow quick reversal of failed transactions...... I don't even understand the slow banking system of these commercial banks...... |

First Bank is notorious for that. Had to end my relationship with them about a decade ago because of precisely this problem and erroneously it took place in Port Harcourt. Made a 6 figure purchase and they refused to credit the account of the vendor despite numerous attempts to either complete the transaction or reverse it. I took the loss and walked away from the bank. |

Nigeria banks are bandits. That was how I went to FCMB to withdraw cash of #20000 using GTB ATM. It was #5000 each for every withdraw. After getting #15000 , the last withdraw failed. It became a tussle between me reporting to each banks. FCMB clarified that the whole issue lies with GTB. I pursued this complain for a whole year without GTB reversing my #5000 . |
