Access Bank has come under public scrutiny following allegations by a customer over a disputed loan facility and difficulties in obtaining account records, prompting concerns about transparency and customer service practices within the financial institution. The concerns were amplified by the President of the Bank Customers’ Association of Nigeria (BCAN), Dr. Uju Ogunbunka, who warned that unresolved customer complaints could affect the bank’s reputation and customer confidence. The controversy stems from claims made by Lydia Okodogbe, who alleged that after securing a loan from the bank in November 2022, she repeatedly sought detailed statements relating to the facility but was unable to obtain them despite numerous requests spanning two years. Okodogbe further alleged that while reviewing her loan account, she discovered an additional loan entry valued at about N2.5 million, which she insisted she neither requested nor approved. According to her, the unresolved issues surrounding the account significantly disrupted her business activities, leading to major financial losses and workforce reductions. “My business suffered significantly. At our peak, we employed about 400 people, many of whom have now lost their jobs because operations became unsustainable,” she said. The dispute has triggered calls for regulatory intervention, with stakeholders urging the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ensure that banking customers are granted access to critical account information and treated fairly during dispute resolution processes. Commenting on the matter, Ogunbunka questioned why a customer’s request for account statements would remain unattended to for such a prolonged period, stressing that banks have a responsibility to provide such information when requested. “The customer is not asking for anything extraordinary. Access to account statements is a fundamental right of every bank customer. If there is nothing to hide, the bank should provide the requested information and explain any outstanding issues,” Ogunbunka said. He cautioned that failure to resolve legitimate complaints could erode trust among customers and encourage them to seek alternatives in an increasingly competitive banking environment. The BCAN president also noted that customer dissatisfaction, if left unchecked, could subject the bank to greater public and regulatory scrutiny. The development has renewed conversations about transparency, customer relations, and dispute-resolution procedures within Nigeria’s banking sector, where public trust remains a key factor in maintaining customer loyalty. Responding to the allegations, Access Bank, through one of its officials, Hassan Dawodu, said the bank had already taken measures to address technical issues linked to the customer’s account and was still investigating the outstanding concerns. However, no additional update had been provided by the bank as of the time the report was filed, leaving several questions surrounding the dispute unresolved. Industry observers say the eventual resolution of the matter could influence public perception of the bank, particularly at a time when responsiveness and transparency are increasingly shaping customer expectations in the financial services sector. https://thependulumnews.com/access-bank-faces-backlash-as-customer-alleges-hidden-n2-5m-loan/

Gotocourt:You complained 3 months after? Did you listen to yourself? And you are blaming the dead man. Who goes to the bank to complain about a failed transaction 3 months after? Even 1 week is dangerous. Have you read the policy of the bank with regards to failed transactions? You people shouldn't blame banks all the time. Do the best you can too. |

RISQUE:Nigerians would justify judas iscariots if there is something to gain from supporting him. What does it matter if he complained 3 days or 3 years after a failed transaction, is it not his hard earned money? What if he travelled, had an accident or became unavailable after the transaction? So the bank should chop his money because he did not report immediately. With this crooked mindset of Nigerian, the country can never progress, not even in a thousand years. |

Could all these back to back brick and mortar bank transaction issues be sponsored by the fintech banks..? It very possible, knowing that Nigerians are gullible n many will be scared away reading these complaints |

Apart from me that I’ve been using their account as salary since 2011, and very active, couple of my colleagues at work are also experiencing same fate. Them no dey give shishi. Even many are planning to port to other banks like gtb that gives salary and quick advance loan to many of our colleagues using them. |

These Nigerian banks think they are the only ones that need money. Even Providus, that i use to rate: don’t rate them again, since they move my account without my consent. They move it to a category they could be charge one ridiculous quarterly charge. I was ready to engage CBN on the matter, you were very lucky to have move my account back in the nick of time. That is just robbery, i didn’t give you consent; you took the liberty to dip your hands into my pocket. Thieves I shouldn’t have even bothered writing plenty emails to them, I should i just engaged my lawyer to sue them after my first mail. |

Dapagun:This is not new. To get a printed statement from the bank too me 5 days. I keep receiving loan offer messages as if I have been granted the loan. The day I will see the money in my account, them go don carry big market, that they won't be able to handle |

correctguy101:Because of all their shenanigans, I transferred all my money out of Access Bank, and stopped using the account 4 years ago. I bought N20k NEPA credits on their mobile platform, they deducted the money but did not send credits. I visited the bank everyday for 1 week, no show. It was until I shouted at the gate, that the security officer gave me a special email address at the head office to lodge my complaint. It was after I complained through that channel thar the money was eventually returned to my account. Now, I mainly use Palmpay, Kuda, Opay, to transact day to day business. |

You employed 400 people and the business ran down because of N2.5 million loan? That's an average of N6, 250 per person. Even if their salary na just N5, 000/month, by the 2nd month, there should be a return to normalcy of the company operations and finances and they pay back. #Everybody just dey lie for this Nigeria# |

wirinet:Stop sounding like you know it all while you know nothing. There are humans working in that band who are saddled with responsibilities of a daily basis, if you know how the banking system operates you won't come here with this ignorance trying to justify something which should have been handled with wisdom. There is nothing like the crooked mindset of Nigeria. Stop displaying your ignorance all in the name of painting a particular bank in a bad light. Own up to your faults and handle issues reasonably. You raised the issue of what if he travelled. Well, I know how many Nigerian bank related issues I have handled despite being in the UK and operating a Nigerian bank account I can list out to you even the more difficult ones, sometimes I had to send siblings to the bank to speak with customer services because of some of these transactions and not something as petty as reporting a failed bank transaction that ought to be reported almost immediately and from anywhere and then you come online to blame a bank without taking the burk of the blame? Common, you guys should stop being mean and work on your ideologies. Dragging Nigeria banking system into it is a total turn off work on yourself bro and stop being bitter. |

Dapagun:I give Kudos to UBA when it comes to handling issues as this. That was how Travelbyself Consult by Victor Ola who supposedly lives in Manitoba, Canada, defrauded my brother. He runs an email newsletter and regularly runs Japa Promo. My brother has been on his newsletter for years and decided to seize his promo to process Canada study visa and student loan as promised by Victor Ola. He made my brother pay thousands of naira as part payment only for the idiot to later request about 15,0000 dollars which he never mentioned from the beginning of the conversation. No admission, nothing for months. This guy turned around to send my brother a so called refund policy he never mentioned that my brother would not have full refund if he pulled out. We pleaded for months, this guy ghosted us. No half refund, no communication. We had to go to court to compel his bank, UBA, to assist us. We eventually got the money reversed by the bank. |
