That Pot Belly Is Not Always “good Living” — It Might Be Hormones by ChidiebereS(op): 5:19am On Jun 08
Before some people attack me, just hear this out.

Most men think that as they grow older, especially after marriage or reaching their 40s, it is normal to develop one “chief commander” pot belly. We even joke about it and call it “evidence of enjoyment” or “good living.”

But what if I told you that in many cases, that belly is not just ordinary fat?

According to health discussions, constant consumption of sugar, bread, soft drinks, noodles, pastries, rice, and other refined carbs can keep insulin levels high for too long.

And when insulin stays high, something interesting happens.

The body increases an enzyme called aromatase, which can convert testosterone (male hormone) into estrogen.

Meaning:

More belly fat = More aromatase
More aromatase = More estrogen
More estrogen = More belly fat

Na loop be that shocked

And this may explain why some men with stubborn pot bellies also struggle with:

❌ Low energy
❌ Low drive
❌ Reduced performance
❌ Constant tiredness

The surprising part?

Some experts argue that endless sit-ups may not be the real solution. The bigger issue could be insulin resistance and diet.

Simple changes people often discuss include:

✔ Reducing sugar
✔ Cutting down refined starch
✔ Avoiding late-night heavy meals
✔ Eating more intentionally

I recently came across a short whiteboard video that breaks this down in a very simple way — the hormone cycle, why belly fat keeps returning, and what may help stop it.

Watch the full video here and tell us if you agree or disagree:

After watching, do you think the average Nigerian diet is silently causing pot bellies in men, or na just normal aging and enjoyment? grin

The pregnant men Dem .. lol

For at least 2 decades now, I only eat twice in a day, I avoid junk food or even outside food self

Lime, Banana, Avocado are things I don't joke with. You need constant balance diet to replace the dying cells

May God bless you for this. This is really helpful. I'll try your recommendations by God's grace. When I got married last year and my belly started coming out and people started hailing me , I thought it was a good thing. What I noticed was that I get tired easily. Ignorance is a killer.

Re: That Pot Belly Is Not Always “good Living” — It Might Be Hormones by DrAda(f):
Nobody will attack you because we all know that pot belly is generally bad for everyone.

A waist circumference above 102cm in adult males and 88cm in adult females increases significantly the risk of developing a cardiovascular diseases (CVDs)

Key facts
- Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally.

- An estimated 19.8 million people died from CVDs in 2022, representing approximately 32% of all global deaths. Of these deaths, 85% were due to heart attack and stroke.

- Over three quarters of CVD deaths take place in low- and middle-income countries.

- Out of the 18 million premature deaths (under the age of 70) due to noncommunicable diseases in 2021, at least 38% were caused by CVDs.

- Most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by addressing behavioural and environmental risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet (including excess salt, sugar, and fats) and obesity, physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol and air pollution.

- It is important to detect cardiovascular disease as early as possible so that management with counselling and medicines can begin.

"Pot" belly is never a good living.

Its always a sign of a diseased living.

Either obesity or a more sinister condition like liver disease etc

That type of fat is visceral fat. The fat you can't pinch. Visceral fat hugs your organs. They're pro inflammatory, too.

I don't eat and I have a potbelly, my younger brother has it, my two other brother don't have it, my sister has a bit of it.
My dad had it my granddad had it

I have a very high work rate due to my nature of job, so am not idle.

There is something called genetics and not everyone is lucky to have lean body fat.

Be grateful if you have it , but don't think others who don't have it is because they eat too much, no it's because the way there body metabolises food is different from yours.

Some people's digestive system processes food differently and might not have the luxury of time for aerobics or luxury of money for Veggies.

Repetition calls for emphasis.

When a blacksmith continuously hit his hammer on a particular spot, he is trying to get something from it.

Let's spread this gospel of wellness.... Health is wealth. The misconception of about potbelly in Nigeria needs to be corrected to avoid preventable deaths.
