Residents Desert Oyo Village After Reported Gunfire Near Old Oyo Forest Reserve by Prestar(op): 3:22pm On Jun 14
Residents of Alaguntan Village in Igbope, Orelope Local Government Area of Oyo State, have reportedly fled their homes following reports of sporadic gunshots in the area, sparking panic in the border community.

The community, which shares a boundary with the Old Oyo National Park, was thrown into confusion after residents allegedly heard repeated gunfire within and around the village.

This publication understands that the incident triggered panic, forcing residents to abandon their homes as they moved to neighbouring communities for safety. Videos obtained showed residents fleeing with their belongings amid fears of a possible attack.

However, details surrounding the incident remain unclear at the time of filing this report, as authorities are yet to confirm any casualties or abductions.

When contacted, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said he could not immediately confirm the incident.

“I can’t confirm that to you right now,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Old Oyo National Park and surrounding forest reserves have in recent months become a major security concern in Oyo State following a series of violent incidents linked to armed groups operating within the vast forest zone.

In January 2026, suspected bandits launched a deadly attack on personnel of the National Park Service in the Oloka axis of the park, killing five forest guards. Since then, security operations have led to the arrest of several suspects allegedly connected to the attack.

More recently, the expansive forest reserve has also been linked to multiple kidnapping incidents in Oyo State, with reports that abducted schoolchildren and teachers from May 2026 attacks were taken into the forest for concealment while negotiations were ongoing.

Security agencies have since intensified surveillance and joint operations in and around the park, as authorities continue efforts to dismantle criminal networks believed to be exploiting the forest terrain for cover.

Kidnapping will be history in Anambra under my watch – Obiano
ByPremium Times March 4, 2014

Anambra Governor elect, Willie Obiano, said on Tuesday in Abuja that his administration would ensure that crime, kidnapping in particular, was a thing of the past.

Mr. Obiano spoke to State House correspondents after a delegation from the state met with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa.

“Kidnapping is very critical for us and under my watch kidnapping will be a thing of the past.

“First, as soon as I am sworn-in, there is going to be a security conference where all the stakeholders in Anambra will come from near and beyond.

“We are going to do a lot of things that the present administration has started,” he said.

Mr. Obiano said he would deploy vigilante groups, equip and train them appropriately to tackle kidnapping.

“We will also place emphasis on youth employment because where most of the youths are employed then the rascal few will be easily policeable,” he said.

This is turning out to something else when these inglorious b*stards were ravaging the middlebelt,I didn't think that we Southerners did enough, even the authorities atimes acted in unsatisfactory ways, simply because they were trying to politically correct.
The narratives were constantly changed to seem like 'farmers herders clashes' even when the truth was obvious and now we are getting a taste of what these indigenous ethnic groups in middlebelt went through.
It's such a pity, even core northerners are also going through hell in the hands these human beasts,so this is the time for all to join hands regardless of ethnic groups, religion, colour or creed and fight these monsters whom are on a mission to destroy the entire country.
The government must not just act but must be seen to be acting decisively on this.
