IMF Asks Tinubu To Impose Fuel, Telecom Taxes On Nigerians - Politics (6) - Nairaland

Nairaland ForumNairaland GeneralPoliticsIMF Asks Tinubu To Impose Fuel, Telecom Taxes On Nigerians (18095 Views)

Poll: Which of these outcomes do you prefer?

Peter Obi should become the president and end hardship. I don't care if he releases Nnamdi Kanu 81% (464 votes)
I'm Yoruba, so I want Tinubu to continue, even if it'll warrant governing our corpses. Tinubu is incompetent and a massive failure, but I'll vote him 10% (58 votes)
Atiku should not govern even if he's competent, because it's the turn of the south 8% (50 votes)
This poll has ended

Mr man, you don’t know what you are saying, Obiano did not debunk the funds he left, these funds are there, the investments are another different money all together, your hate for Peter Obi will get you no where. Why hasn’t effcc grilled him regarding the lies…
Misterone:
Oga, big fat lie! This has been disproved by his successor! How can you be calculating money you invested in a brewery as money left behind! What kind of accounting is that? Then you awarded contracts, you refuse to pay then calculate it as money left behind knowing fully well that those money have been spent! You refuse to pay workers minimum wage, then you say you save the money! Not even one community school was built. You went about taking pictures in seminary schools and claiming you've done well for education! How? Are seminary schools not private schools? Obi is really a criminal!

Please, you tinubu supporters and APC supporters should not make me laugh today

Lagos alone has a budget less than 3 trillion naira, or about 2 billion dollars. Lagos is the same size as New York city. New York spends 10 billion dollars on the city police alone. 10 billion.

Our budget self...if we divide it among the 230 million nigerians...it can give us about 300000 naira for one year per nigerian. For one year, not monthly

Your tinubu is failing at raising the revenue of this country. That is why we dey borrow.

Anytime I hear all the millions dey call, I just dey laff. Millions in naira that is worthless to begin with.
All these noise you are just wasting your data cus I don't bloody care. You accept what I said or not I'm supporting Tinubu till 2035 and you know he will rule your a s s till 2035 so better stop shalaye that hold no ground..

IMF leave Nigeria and Africa alone.

Your projection has been the reason why African countries economy have remained poor.
We don't want your financial and fiscal policy again.

Tinubu should listen to the IMF and do it, and if he doesn't , whoever is taking over should listen to the IMF and do it, alongside fighting corruption

I know people will abuse me, and will call me names for my opinion, so let me drop some facts.

Our budget this year is: 68 trillion naira

Actual revenue available to fund this budget is : 33 trillion naira
Deficit: 35 trillion naira...and to cover that deficit, that is where the loans come in.

Yes, oil revenue rose, but remember that we have a debt of about 150 trillion naira to pay for.

People like to abuse me on this site and call me agbadoe, but if it was Peter Obi, or Atiku in charge, based on what I know, I would give them the same advice. We all shout that we want government to stop borrowing, but when it comes to measures to stop borrowing, we suddenly become allergic to good advice

Tinubu is a bad leader, and I am not voting for him next year, by the way.

Nigeria has had this deficit problem for decades. Everytime earnings do not meet up with the budget, meaning we have to borrow. This is because of the fact that we rely on resources WHOSE PRICES WE DO NOT SET. We cannot set oil above the international price to fund our budget because our buyers will go and meet the cheaper option. Back when we had cotton, cocoa, palm oil, same thing. (Ghana some years ago raised prices of its cocoa to meet up with budget funding and buyers went to other countries, Nigeria included, to buy cheaper stuff).

Most of the rich and poor do not pay taxes, only people in formal employment pay PAYE taxes, and revenue from VAT was about 8 trillion naira , plus revenue from bank charges was around 4 trillion naira...for this budget.

And the 68 trillion naira is not enough for a nation of 230 million people. You can abuse me, but we are too big for the budget. And that budget is the money available before stealing and looting happens.

Y'all can abuse me, but we have to face cold reality.

Either we start listening to the IMF and fighting corruption, as well as improving taxation, or else, even if we vote Obi tomorrow, as i hope we all do, or Atiku tomorrow, or even Sowore, I guarantee that our debt would be 800 trillion naira in eight years time.

You are free to abuse me and call me names now, thank you. I no longer care.

If una no wan hear, then that means you should stop complaining about borrowing, because refusal to support improved taxation and anti-corruption measures means you support borrowing.

Again, I am voting for Obi next year, and in reality, I don't care about all your politicans. IF Obi fails, out he goes in four years, and so forth, until we get sane leadership. Maybe we go wait till the debt is 10000 trillion naira before we get our own MIlliei and LKY...it took Argentina to get into such severe debt that it was defaulting on payments, for them to wake up. Now their currency is strong and fiscal performance better, and eventually other areas will improve.
Who is fighting corruption? NNPCltd embezzled Trillions of Naira, while we're owing less than the stolen amount.Very soon it would be swept under the carpet, then citizens will be suffocated in the name of sacrifice, why haven't the IMF adviced Tinubu to go hard on the looters in Nigeria? only taxation, taxation, taxation. Politicians are earning more than the working presidents in the world doing nothing, but poor masses are to sacrifice for the country, vote wisely

But this government has removed fuel subsidy and subsidy on electricity. Taxes have increased. There is taxes on calls and other telcom services. This Government have also borrowed more than all successive government. The looting is going on uninterrupted. This government is wasting resources. What happened to the coastal of #15trn-#16trn awarded? What has Tinubu achieved with all the subsidy money, taxes, borrowing, etc.
Just list is achievements that will make people to pay more taxes?
Instead of the government to stop looting and corruptions in the system by strengthening the system technologically to reduce corruption. IMF and World Bank are gaining from Nigeria corruptions. They borrow Nigeria money with heavy interest, join Nigeria government to force Nigeria to pay more taxes. Project fees or contracts are being inflated and given to cronies. Many end up collecting money and refuse to do the projects.

If there is one president capable of truly fixing Nigeria's income problem, it is Tinubu. Before voting Obi, look at his antecedent of increasing IGR in 8 freaking years by only 20%(2006-2014). you are asking a F- student to replace a C student because you want A student. Obi is a miserly, which is not what we need. A man earning 100,000 naira with 8 kids and 2 wives real need is not to begin to find ways to cut spending and save money, he has to be on an aggressive hunt to increase his income geometrically, although he also needs to cut cost regardless. I understand your sentiment about income, and i have the same believe. Nigerians are so fixated on how large politicians live that they dont realise how measly our income is compared to our infrastructural need, and i know why.

Okay, I didn't expect you to agreement with me
This is not about agreeing, dis is about prescribing "cut off the head" becos of headache ... I am saying you & IMF are completely wrong postulating the way forward for Nigeria is incessant " Taxation"

You can tax a flourishing economy not a Mal nourish economic, thats why people don't see impact despite the increased revenue
What nourishes the economy to reflect impact is " maximize productivity & high GDP" ... Tax can never prosper a nation

I guess you support the usual borrowing to fund the budget then. It's your opinion, no disrespect. The problem is, it will worsen the debt and lead to the probelms you fear
bro don't speak for, infact many Nigerians and myself are against Tinubu excessive " Borrowing" ... the govt are just " Lazy headed" ... Since Tinubu became president what production have we scaled up .. Is it crude, is power, even gas we have not maximize & explores natural resources God given to us up to 60% nd we are crying low Revenue ... very funny

Govt just want quick easy money ..so we see loan, Tax, and levies as fast express ignoring the ripple effects n setbacks

And as I said, we should fight corruptioon at the same time, before you start.
I can be idealist but i am more of a realist, forget any fight to end corruption, lets face whats feasible ... we need to that seeing Our natural resources as a way Out, we need to start acting like we know we blessed with resources

As develop as Turkey is they among all there neibors dont have crude, and they don't even hide there pain they don't have crude, Buh look at Nigeria we get crude yet we are at the mercy of external forces ,..abeggi jare

Sentiments apart! I am a Yoruba man,the person you claimed built Lagos has destroyed the country with useless and needless policies.

Tell me a former Lagos governor who didn't perform? This is because it's the former country capital territory and the structure was already on ground, smaller geographical land mass,IGR, infrastructure and other factors.

Former osun state governor Aregbesola worked with Tinubu for years before he became governor but couldn't deliver in osun because of the large geographical mass land size, poor IGR and no existing infrastructure on ground to develop on, unlike Lagos state. These are the challenges been faced by other states in the country.

If Obi and Tinubu should swap state as a governor,it would amount to same performance metric you want to see.

The IMF advised put Nigerian in the mess we are in today, they didn’t advise him to ensure adequate provision of electricity and security

Why African leaders think IMF nations who denied you some benefits, will then form an organizations to loan you money with economy policies and and conditions attached , believe this IMF means well for you is worrisome, look at the rate of dollar to Naira before and after the advice?

They have put you on notice by publishing the news.

Someone criticised the poll up there. The wording of the second option is a bit too direct, but unfortunately true. During Buhari's 8years, northerners reacted like you committed blasphemy if you dared criticise Buhari. While the southwesterners taunted you for belonging to the other tribe. Together, they held down blind support for that failed government.
Today, southwesterners are staunchly defending based on tribe.
So, the country can never be good. The division is too much...and what is the division over? Meaningless tribal affiliation.
