Why States Build Church And Mosque And Don't Build Factories. by nairalanda1(op): 9:15am On Jun 15
A lot of us complain that state governors do not want to build factories, they want to build churches and mosques. Which at face glance is sad...and some go even blame relgion as being used to oppress people.

But let's look at it this way

A governor builds a church or mosque...guess who takes over the building...the community. Guess who will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the mosque and church...the community. Not the government . And since people like religion in this country, they will see to the upkeep of the mosque and the church. At no extra cost to government.

On the other hand, a governor builds factories to make stuff. Sounds good...except that
1. Employment will be by connections, man know man, not for qualifed people. Also to keep people happy, far more workers would be employed than are needed. It would even get to a point where someone would be collecting salary at the factory without doing anything at all.
2. The things made from the factories would be sold at people's prices, not at the prices that would keep the factory running and enable it to make profit to expand , upgrade and attract investment. And any attempt to sell the things made in the factory ar profit..would lead to protests and riots. And comments like government built factory that produces stuff common man cannot afford.
3. And you know how people treat government business...
4.Government would be pouring billions into the unprofitable thing, just to keep it alive.

You see where this is going.

The best government can do is to make the conditions where private factories can prosper, and not build factories themselves.

When I look at where we're coming from, I will say Nigeria is developing, but developing at a slow pace

States want to empower their masses, because being religious does not mean that you automatically have a job...and eventually that leads to chaos.

The problem with state run factories and companies is as I have outlined above. Politicans will use them as means to reward their allies. And the prices of the stuff made there won't be sold in a way as to make them profitable because 'the masses need some dividend of democracy'

The best way states can get production rising is to make it more convienent for the private sector to set up production there. It is the only way.

i actually do not agree 100% thou , states can do the set and employ private hands to do the running and their will be a profit sharing formula and of course an external auditor to check mate , an instance of d BRt in lagos , masses stil benefit even if it is not 100% run by d state . they are just cool with using poverty as a tool
