Let me use this opportunity to educate the semi-illiterate and educated illiterate members of the Accord Party.

A court of law is not a Father Christmas. It only considers and grants reliefs specifically sought by the parties before it. In the Court of Appeal order being circulated by some dogmatic supporters of the Accord Party in Osun State, the court granted a stay of proceedings, not a stay of judgment.

In law, proceedings ordinarily encompass the processes leading to the determination of a case, including pleadings, presentation of evidence, and final written addresses by the parties. Once those stages have been concluded, the delivery of judgment is a distinct judicial act.

Therefore, a stay of proceedings should not automatically be interpreted as an arrest or suspension of judgment unless the appellate court expressly orders a stay of judgment.

I therefore salute the Judge of the Federal High Court for setting what many consider a good judicial record in the interest of democracy and the rule of law.
