Federal Gov’t To Launch Digital TV, Offers Households Free Access To 100 Channels

The Federal Government has announced plans to launch FreeTV, a national digital television platform that will provide Nigerians with free access to more than 100 television channels without monthly subscription fees.

The initiative, scheduled for this Wednesday, June 17, 2026, was part of Nigeria’s Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme and is aimed at expanding access to digital broadcasting while supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to a statement posted on the verified X handle of the Presidency on Wednesday, the platform was designed to ensure that every Nigerian benefits from the country’s transition from analogue to digital television, regardless of location or income level.

The government said FreeTV will offer households access to over 100 national, regional and state channels featuring news, sports, movies, music, children’s programmes, educational content, and dedicated Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo language channels.

The service will be available through satellite, terrestrial transmission and the FreeTV mobile application, allowing users in major cities, rural communities and areas previously excluded from the DSO pilot phases to access digital television services.

The statement noted that Nigerians would not be required to purchase new television sets to use the platform. Existing televisions will function with compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoders, while households that already own compatible free-to-air decoders may not need to acquire new equipment.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, described the initiative as a major step toward expanding digital inclusion across the country.

“FreeTV speaks directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of Renewed Hope towards expanding access, creating opportunity and ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location or income, can benefit from the digital economy. With FreeTV, families across Nigeria can enjoy quality digital television without a monthly subscription, while our local content producers, technicians and young creatives gain new platforms and new jobs,” Ebuebu said.

Beyond improving access to television services, the government said the platform is expected to stimulate growth in Nigeria’s creative and broadcast industry through the establishment of regional production studios in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano and Benin City.

The studios are expected to create employment opportunities for content producers, technicians, editors, camera operators, sound engineers and other young creative professionals.

The Federal Government also reaffirmed that the country’s final analogue television switch-off remained scheduled for December 31, 2028, urging Nigerians to begin preparations by checking the compatibility of their decoders and downloading the FreeTV mobile application.

Another avenue to siphon and control.

You removed subsidy on petrol and electricity which were crucial for daily life, then plan to re-introduce it in form of free digital TV which people can do without?

And the free channels no go pass propaganda TV stations. Then one day, all of a sudden, you shut down access to X or other cable or digital TV to force Nigerians to these ones.

Dictators and their priorities. The red flags are always there.

Television is not our priority at this time. In a country where people cannot walk down the street without looking over their shoulders, assurances that their lives and livelihoods are secure are needed, not free TV.

This is undoubtedly a distraction from the biting hunger, economic collapse and insecurity currently plaguing the country. When will this useless government rescue hundreds of Nigerians in the bushes and forests?.

This TV deceit must be seen for what it is: a deliberate distraction from the real issues ahead of the upcoming election.

I just hope they won't turn it into another platform for nonstop political campaigns and government propaganda. To be honest, I have lost a lot of trust in this government, so I will judge this initiative by its implementation, not the announcement.
Re: FG To Launch Digital TV, Offers Households Free Access To 100 Channels by SouthSouth1914:
Haha.., how can Nigerians watch these channels? With the sun I suppose? It is obvious this government is clearly out of touch with the current state of the nation.

Use this money to buy armed drones and go after bandits and other criminals. Subsidize fuel to bring back our economy.

More than 70% of Nigerians are hungry and angry with this government. Everything they do is to siphon monies through elephant projects! Nonsense

How is this more important than crashing petrol price that Tinubu has failed to achieve three years after hitting the ground running, following his fight for power to grab it for his own turn at worsening APC extreme poverty and insecurity shege huh

Who is fooled by this latest gimmick of All Promises Cancelled, APC master strategist of propaganda lies?

Deltafirstson:
Although the pump price of fuel was N197 when President Bola Tinubu took over on May 29, 2023, the product now sells for N617 per litre – less than two months after.

In his inaugural address, Tinubu announced that subsidy was gone, fulfilling a promise that all leading presidential candidates made during the campaign.

Nigerians have been lamenting the hardship occasioned by fuel price hike. Amid the lamentation, a video where Tinubu campaigned to slash the price of fuel went into circulation.

Checks by Daily Trust affirmed the authenticity of the video uploaded on the YouTube page of Channels Television.

At his campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, on January 25, 2023, Tinubu spoke on a number of issues, but those of fuel scarcity and naira redesign made the headlines.

However, Tinubu who spoke in Yoruba language, also assured the crowd that though people were saying petrol price would hit N200, it would be reviewed downward under him.

“The great Nigerian youths, the great Nigerian students, the confident Nigerian youths. This is a revolution. This election is a revolution. They are plotting, but they will fail. They said fuel price will increase and reach N200 per litre. Go and relax, we will bring it down,” he had said in the 7th minute of the video.

Okay, here is how much NTA gets in a year....it gets its money from the Ministry of Information, whose budget is...1.5 billion for capital, 1.27 billion for overhead...all in naira.

If you want to upgrade to international standards (don't back away now)...let's see how much international standard government stateions around the world get in terms of budget

France : 3.8 billion euros or 6 trillion naira...to all its audiovisual channels..france televisions and the radio service.
The Netherlands: 1.2 billion euros...or 1.8 tillion naira.
Japan : 1.7 trillion naira

AND THE UK...the gold standard...BBC...9.2 trillion naira.

How much is NTA's proposed budget again...ah yes, it is sharing 3 billion naira with FRCN and others.

If I say that Nigerians should pay something like they do in the UK and Japan television licence fees..which account for a significant amount of funding for the BBC and NHK Budget for example, I am sure most of you will call me a tinubu supporter.

Yet, there is no TV station that can reach international standard on just...less than 3 billion naira.
