I am trying to get a new ride and I would like to have a jeep due to my residential terrain. I have been thinking of a Ford Edge but upon inquirying from a trusted mechanic and rewire, I was advised to run away from the car. Although, they couldn't give a specific reason. Has anyone used this car and whats your advise for a first time Ford user.

pawsofdikeje:They have internal water pump which when about to fail gives no heads-up. Also the failure causes catastrophic engine failure best is try and look elsewhere if nah naija used, if nah Tokunbo ensure to change the part as soon as possible I believe replacement is set at 100k km by manufacturer |

First-time Ford owner tips: Service it on time. Use quality oil and genuine filters. Don't ignore warning lights. Maintain the battery and charging system. Check transmission fluid regularly. Use quality replacement parts. Key advice: Preventive maintenance is more important with Ford than waiting for something to fail. |

Ford with its boring interior. No creativity at all. |
| Re: Advise For A First Time Ford User by Intellect247: 9:23am On Jun 22 |
Ford is a good car, you will enjoy it. The only constraint with using ford is the parts. You can only get the parts in Ojuelegba, though the parts don't get spoilt easily. The parts are cheaper compared to other cars of same status I have been using my 2015 ford focus for over 4 years now with no issues. |

pawsofdikeje:A few years ago I was also going to purchase a Ford SUV, but an experienced car dealer of mine discouraged me. He mentioned the electrical system as the major issue. I took his advise. I do not know the situation presently. Again, I faced the same issue when I was going to purchase a BMW. However I bought it and used it for four years. Initially it was the No mechanic story, but I found a very good mechanic in Shomolu. The car went well until I sold it. I moved over to Mercedes and there’s been no cause to regret. Aside from Mercedes, I have also focused on Honda and Toyota to have some peace. So I think that you must first look around for assured mechanics. Get an honest mechanic, pay him well to check the car before you pay, if you are not sure of checking by yourself. While he is checking, ensure that he does not make any form of contact with the seller. Not even an eye contact. If you are in Lagos, check Ladipo auto spare market. You are sure to get good mechanics there. Also ensure to always purchase brand new car parts and brand new tyres. |

I bought an 8 month used naija ford edge 2008 model since 2020. Still using the car now and car travels from Lagos to Benue at least twice a year since 2020. Car also shuttles lagos to Ibadan at least twice monthly for weekends within same period. Its my everyday office car. Major issues within the six year period are: 1, Rear legs going out of balance causing uneven tire wears - recently replace the rear shafts, hubs and got problem solved. 2, Overheating occasionally due to faulty fan or relay - Fan module and relay has been replaced and engine is doing fine. NOTE: Engine and transmission system has never been tempered with since I stick to recommended oil and fluid. Most repairs are carefully done by road side mechanics. ( you can always contact FEMTOP - Ikeja, he is a Ford specialist). Spare parts are easily gotten at Ojuelegba though, a little costlier than the regular cars. Resale value is poor, unlike Toyota. |

You took the words out of my mouth. OP go for affordable car like Toyota. My Ford Edge developed a fault (flat battery after parking for more than 2 days). Till today, all the mechanics (Ago, Airport Road, Ladipo, Owerri) we took it could not rectify the fault, because there is no Ford care expert in Nigeria. Gotocourt: |

FORD FOUND ON ROAD DEAD. don't try that vehicle. Either use the money to l buy land or find a quiet Honda to buy. Avoid FORD like Ebola |
| Re: Advise For A First Time Ford User by efikoefiko(m): 11:31am On Jun 22 |
Avoid ford o! I used ford Ecosport 2015 as I type this message is parked with a gear problem. Very problematic brand. For me to program the speedo meter clock it took forever and only one technician could go that for me in Abuja. Run from ford my guy! |

Your mechanic is looking out for you. In Nigeria, mechanics say "run away" from Ford not because it’s a bad car, but because it requires precise care. Unlike a Toyota, a Ford will not tolerate cheap generic oils, skipped servicing, or roadside guessing. Here is the quick breakdown of why they warned you, and what you need to know: Why They Warned You * The Internal Water Pump (3.5L V6 Engines): On older models from 2007 to 2014, the water pump is hidden deep inside the engine. If it leaks, it dumps water directly into your engine oil, instantly destroying the engine. Replacing it requires tearing the whole engine apart, which local mechanics hate doing. * Complex Electricals: The Edge uses highly advanced electrical modules. If a local rewire starts cutting and tapping wires instead of using a proper diagnostic scanner, they will scramble the car's computer system. * Coolant Leaks (2015 to 2018 EcoBoost): The newer 4-cylinder turbo engines had a notorious factory defect where coolant would leak into the cylinders, causing total engine failure. The Golden Rules for a First-Time Ford User If you still want to buy the Ford Edge because of its solid build and premium comfort, you must change your maintenance mindset: 1. Ditch the Roadside Mechanic: You cannot take this car to a regular roadside kazeem. You need a specialist who owns proper Ford diagnostic software like FORScan and fixes cars based on error codes, not guesswork. 2. Buy the Right Year: Avoid the 2015 to 2018 2.0L EcoBoost models completely. If your budget permits, look for 2019 or newer models, where Ford fixed the major engine design flaws. 3. Strict Fluids Only: You must use the exact fluids specified by Ford, usually Motorcraft brand. Using cheap, wrong-viscosity oils will rapidly destroy a Ford engine. The Ford Edge is heavy, stable, and handles bad roads beautifully. But if you do not have a trusted Ford specialist or a deep wallet for genuine parts, your mechanic's advice is spot on. For peace of mind on rough terrain, you might be much happier with a high-clearance Japanese alternative like a Toyota RAV4, a Highlander, or a Honda CR-V, which any local mechanic can fix blindfolded. |

1Alex:This is correct and in addition to this please just avoid ford it is only for people who can afford it’s maintenance and if you don’t have money to afford the maintenance anytime you see the car you will getting angry unnecessarily |

Use only original ATF and Full Synthetic engine oil. |
| Re: Advise For A First Time Ford User by viqSmallz(m): 2:52pm On Jun 22 |
I have used ford as a my main vehicles (3). Lessons learnt - avoid overheating; watch out for your coolant gauge, service as at when due with the prescribed oil - mine was Motor Craft, do not by Nigerian used, fix with recommended parts do not patch or manage, use only one mechanic - trust ford engineer. Benefits - they are rugged vehicles. In rainy season, dry season. Have great ground clearance. Sturdy on high speed, they do not wave will driving, they are different from the rest, an average ford has more elegance than the average japanese brand. They are cheaper than the usual cars we have. Disadvantage- poor resell value if you are looking to make a gain after use, die that idea. Most mechanics have no idea about it, however you will always find the mechanic for you. Parts are a bit expensive becasue of the market, however they last longer than your regular japanese parts, this makes up for the cost of purchase |
