Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state following growing concerns over the accumulation of refuse in some areas.

The state government, in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gbenga Akosile, acknowledged residents’ complaints and assured Lagosians that efforts were underway to restore normal waste collection services.

According to the statement, relevant agencies and service providers have been mobilised to work round the clock to clear waste backlogs and improve sanitation across affected communities.

“The Lagos State Government acknowledges the concerns of residents regarding the recent accumulation of refuse in some parts of the state and wishes to assure Lagosians that the situation is receiving the highest level of attention from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the entire machinery of government.

“We are not oblivious to the inconveniences and concerns occasioned by the situation. Lagosians deserve a clean, healthy and environmentally sustainable city, and this administration remains fully committed to delivering on that obligation,” the statement read.

Akosile said additional resources had been deployed to support waste evacuation efforts, while strategic interventions were being implemented to strengthen operational efficiency and improve waste collection and disposal.

He added that the governor had directed the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency and other relevant agencies to intensify their operations.

The government noted that Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, making it one of the highest waste-producing cities on the African continent.

While describing the current situation as temporary, the government said substantial progress had already been recorded in some locations and promised further improvements in the coming days.

“We wish to reassure residents that this challenge is temporary. Indeed, substantial progress is already being recorded in several locations, and more improvements will become visible across the state in the days ahead,” he added.

The government also urged residents, market associations, businesses and community leaders to support sanitation efforts by disposing of waste properly and avoiding activities that obstruct drainage channels, roads and designated waste collection points.

It reiterated its commitment to maintaining environmental standards and protecting public health across the state.

While it is encouraging to hear that Governor Sanwo-Olu has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations, many Lagosians would argue that the real question is: why did the situation get this bad in the first place?

Lagos generates thousands of tonnes of waste daily. This is not a new development. It is a known reality that should have been anticipated and planned for long before refuse began piling up across major roads, markets, residential areas, and business districts.

Residents appreciate the government's acknowledgment of the problem, but people are increasingly looking beyond statements and assurances. They want consistent results. A city aspiring to be a leading economic hub in Africa cannot afford recurring waste management crises that pose health risks, affect businesses, and diminish the quality of life.

Many Lagosians faithfully pay taxes, environmental levies, and waste management fees. In return, they expect a reliable and efficient waste collection system, not emergency interventions after refuse has accumulated to alarming levels.

While residents also have a responsibility to dispose of waste properly, government agencies and service providers must equally be held accountable for ensuring that collection and disposal systems function effectively. Public cooperation works best when citizens can see that the institutions responsible for waste management are also fulfilling their obligations.

The current response should therefore not only focus on clearing existing waste but also on addressing the underlying causes of the backlog. Were there operational failures? Funding issues? Capacity constraints? Contractor performance challenges? Lagosians deserve transparency on what went wrong and what measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence.

Ultimately, success will not be measured by press statements but by what residents see in their communities. Clean streets, timely waste collection, and a sustainable sanitation system are what will restore public confidence.

Lagosians are not asking for perfection. They are asking for a city where waste management is proactive rather than reactive.

While the idea of having a monthly environmental sanitation exercise is commendable, I believe cleanliness should not be reduced to just one Saturday every month between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.

A clean environment is not a monthly event; it is a daily responsibility.

If people throw refuse carelessly from Sunday to Friday and only clean up on one designated day, we are merely treating the symptoms and not addressing the root cause of the problem.

What we need is a culture where:

* Residents keep their surroundings clean every day.
* Waste is disposed of properly and regularly.
* Local authorities ensure timely waste collection.
* Markets, businesses, and households take ownership of sanitation.

That said, I agree that there should be consequences for individuals and businesses that repeatedly allow refuse to accumulate around their properties. Sanctions can encourage compliance, but they should be applied fairly and alongside efficient waste management services.

The government also has a responsibility. It is difficult to expect residents to maintain cleanliness if refuse collection is irregular, bins are insufficient, or waste disposal facilities are inaccessible.

The most successful cities in the world are not clean because they dedicate three hours each month to sanitation. They are clean because cleanliness is embedded in everyday habits, supported by effective waste management systems, and enforced through consistent regulations.

Rather than focusing solely on one environmental sanitation day, we should promote a mindset that says:

**"Every day is environmental sanitation day."**

That is the only way to achieve a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.

Lagos should draw a new road map to waste evacuations this emergency clearing doesn’t work all level of government should invest 20 percent of resources in waste management each home must be paying Lawma no excuse each ward to be given to single waste company
Market must evacuate waste daily
New waste terminal must be open in Badagry and ikorodu

I’ll say this is what I think cos this order is never a long lasting solution
1. Decentralize waste management sector to Local governments level
2. Give more efficient companies license to operate, companies who could hire more staffs and get more trucks (This is where the problem is cos people who are in charge of this are their leaders)
3. Employ a dedicated 24 hours clean up around Lagos roads, markets and city centers. Make them see Cotonou now our neighbors here beside us
4. Invest massively in the waste loading stations and recycling plants
5. Place waste bin every 5m or strategic places around the city centre, markets that gets picked up twice daily

After all this, you can place a ban on indiscriminate waste dumping and littering with serious punishments for erring

What I don't seems to understand in this Saneo Olu Lagos is : does it have to require a governor order for the people to carry out their civic responsibility??

So till we shout scream call out and complain before the govt orders are given?

Instead of heads to roll we are here reading long narratives and expecting tax payers to keep shouting out but they will tax you even before your pay settles in your account

How I wish the speed of taxing is applied in all other services that are to be rendered across Lagos

Lagos in indeed working just like the molue n danfo that you need to scream before driver will buy or pour fuel after collection of your fares

If one has to order for things like this to be done, then that is a point of system failure imo as far as waste management is concerned.

These things ought to be well organized, planned for and administrated well. It has to be system-thought out with r&d to boost kpi levels as well.
