Nigerian social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has declared his readiness to lead volunteer protesters into the forest to confront bandits and rescue kidnapped citizens. This declaration followed a wave of Ratel Movement protests he spearheaded in June 2026 across Abuja and Oyo State to demand government action against rampant insecurity.

The "bush protest" movement escalated after the mass abduction of 45 schoolchildren and their teachers from communities in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Following reports that one of the teachers was beheaded by the bandits, VDM took his advocacy from social media to the streets:
